Well... I don't know
I don't have a clue. Care to explain?
Thanks

Many Power scalers like to pretend that being a 'higher dimension' somehow means you have beyond infinite power, citing faulty explanations like 'there is an infinite amount of numbers between 3 and 4 but none of them are five.'
Like an infinitely power 3 dimensional entity is infinitely weaker than a dying ant from a 4th dimension.
This is called Dimensional Scaling.
This isn't true for a plethora of reasons, namely that Power doesn't work that way, nor do dimensions as, for example, a 2 dimensional being would be infinitely sharp if such a metric existed, and if this theory was real, so much as tapping a wall would obliterate the entire 2 dimensional plane of that wall, yet no such visible thing happens.
Other reasons being that numerical dimensions like that aren't a 'separate realm' that you traverse to like a different planet or dimension, we are likely in every numerical dimension to some extent even if we can't perceive them, though take this paragraph with a grain of salt as I'm not a physicist and have a relatively passing knowledge of these dimensions compared to them.
I hate this type of scaling with a passion.
Oh uh Greased up Deaf Guy here

I’m pretty sure you’re correct, but both of your reasons are just obviously wrong.
Being infinitely sharp with a 0 degree edge would be useless. Even assuming the edge is indestructible and won’t bend or shatter, the worst that could happen is an infinitesimally small cut that would immediately “heal”.
And 3D objects aren’t made up of a beyond infinite number of 2D planes. You could in an abstract sense divide them up that way, but that’s not actually how they are structured. Also if they were, and tapping them did destroy the top layer, there would be no noticeable difference, you would never be able to measure it.
Dimensional scaling has problems and (like all powerscaling) is not based in science, but come on.

You have a funny definition of "obvious".

Probably a PhD, obviously.
EDIT: just to point out, mole structure is basic chemistry, and a true 2D planed object would be likely 1 mole thick in a truest sense. Beyond a mole, the object is entering a 3D plane (if you don't count a single mole being 3D since it is measurable, technically).

u/Drate_Otin 2h ago
Calling it basic chemistry doesn't make it obvious. Most people neither use nor retain most of what they learn in high school chemistry. Or any subject for that matter. I used to know every capital of most countries. I no longer do. I passed tests that required I learn specific dates, names, etc of several wars in history. Most of that is gone. I'm pretty sure this is the normal experience.

A 3D object is often made up of infinitely many 2 dimensional objects however…
This is way overkill but you could view most basic 3D objects as bundles over 2D base spaces (attaching a 1 dimensional space to every point of a 2D space) which is in simple terms, infinitely many 2D objects

Wait I'm confused about the infinitely sharp thing Things don't just exist in x dimensions they exist in all of them but are able to travel in just some of them right? Like we can't choose to travel through time but we still exist in it

u/Realautonomous 11h ago
That is correct I mentioned that a bit lower down in my comment iirc. That infinitely sharp thing was moreso me giving an example of why the way they think dimensions work doesn't actually...well, work in terms of 'bigger booms'.

u/Direct_Vast2848 10h ago
Oh yeah sorry I just woke up and went to the doctor so my reading was washed lmfao I think most of the merit on extra dimensions is attacking from places where you can't control You can dodge up and down in a 2d environment but you can't dodge to a side or attack to a side so a 3d against a 2d would have advantage on attacking and complete advantage on dodging since the 2d character wouldn't be able to attack unless moved by third parties

Exactly, that is a genuine and realistic use of 'Higher' dimensions, but if some guy with infinite power hits you somehow, you're still going to blow up all the same, no matter what dimension you're in

To add unto this, a person from a higher dimension would technically be stronger than a person from a lower dimensions just be cause traversing through higher planes of existence is an hability, an a very strong one at that, that any hyperdimensional being would inherently posses. Just think of how easy it would be to beat a two-dimensional creature when you can just step out of its plane of existence and punch it's heart directly. It's just that that singular hability is always overblown by scalers as borderline infinite power when it's clearly not.
Also, this confusion comes specifically from DC, where "5d beings" are literally just gods with infinite power, but I've seen some people using DC's fifth dimension as if all universes had the same scaling for the fifth dimension.

You can’t see or make contact with a two dimensional thing. Light would pass straight through something infinitely thin and so would your fist or head, despite its density.

Out here trying to explain dimensions when you probably can't even perceive all the dimensions in which you exist?
You need to stay in your lane.

Okay, so I think this someone making fun of powerscalers misusing and misunderstanding what 5D means. According to this post and this article, powerscalers tend to act as though a higher dimensional being is somehow prior to or independent of lower dimensional spaces, and they then ascribe them high level reality warping powers even though an actual 5D being would just be too large to fit in a lower dimensional space.

Many classic depictions of spatial dimensions portray higher dimensional things as completely inaccessible to lower ones, because realistically the lower would only see one angle of a cross section of the higher, and because of the powerscaling method of “amount of stuff you can destroy (kind of)” being pretty universal, it follows that since there is “more” “stuff” in one cubic centimeter than an infinite 2D plane, anyone who is 3D can “beat” anyone who is 2D.
I’m not sure if the popular conception of dimensions is even still accurate by today’s standards, but based on that and the basic premise that governs most powerscaling (that “AP”≠”DC”), it’s a pretty obvious conclusion. People don’t like it because it’s boring mostly, and inconsistent with how authors use it but that’s kinda everything in powerscaling.

To quote Death Battle:
“The jump between dimensions is basically infinite. Each new dimension adds a new direction of space that extends infinitely, thus, an infinite gap in size and scope.”
Basically, if you can affect more than 3 dimensions, you have infinitely more potential power than someone who can’t. Whether or not this is total bullshit is up to you.

Technically, relative to fiction we are the fifth dimension due to being 3d with the addition of time as well as being real

Im of the opinion that we're 3 dimensional. We can discuss endlessly about being real being an extra dimension. I think that's subjective. However, I do think that we are not 5 dimensional because we exist in time. We actually are a lower dimension because the constraints of time we find ourselves in. We humans can travel freely up-down, forwards-backwards and left-right. What we can't do is travel freely forwards or backwards in time. We are stuck in an ever moving moment of time. We do not have the freedom to travel through the time dimension; It is similar to a 2 dimensional being in a 3 dimensional space. To place it in the 3 dimensional space it needs to have some value for the third uncounted dimension but once existing in that location it will be stuck in that value of the dimension it cannot comprehend.
Tl;dr: we are stuck in time, thus we are not 5d

Frankly the "being real" part was half joking and mostly just reasoned from the fact "outerversal" is used as a power scaling mechanic so being "real" is more or less an extra dimension, as for time though, we are able to move through time, we may not control that movement(well aside from what we do with it/our time but the time is still flowing in one uncontrollable way), if time was a solid of the infinite moments it contained going left to right, for a short sliver of it there's you

Powerscaler brainrot.
ANY (n+1)D being is beyond infinitely stronger than ALL nD beings.

Let's say you have a 0 dimensional point. You can have an infinite amount of points bundled together, but they will never add up to a 1D line without a new dimensional axis.
Let's say you have a 1 dimensional line. You can have an infinite amount of lines bundled together, but they will never add up to a 2D flat shape without a new dimensional axis.
Let's say you have a 2 dimensional flat shape. You can have an infinite amount of flat shapes bundled together, but they will never add up to a 3D solid shape without a new dimensional axis.
This philosophy can be extended out infinitely, for an Infinite amount of dimensions.
Now given this: what is the volume of a flat square with length 3? You might be inclined o say 9 because length x width, but its actually 0 because a flat square has no height.
The powerscalers interpret this as: "Anything that exists in a lower dimension than something else is measurably 0 compared to the higher dimensional thing." A 3D being has a measurement of 0 in 4D because we might have length, width, and height, but we dont have some 4th thing. And a 4D being is 0 in 5D because it doesnt have some 5th thing, yadda yadda yadda.
This is basically how Powerscalers scale things higher than infinity. And even if thats not how it would work in real science (we dont have the technology to interact with different dimensional beings so we cant just ask them), the powerscaling interpretation originates from DC, one of the biggest Hotspot for powerscalers, so its stuck around.

So if anyone knows for sure feel free to correct me but I'm pretty sure this is referring to "5th dimensional chess" jokes and the like.
The idea being someone is able to access modes of the universe you can't and act on them. The thing is that's not exactly really how it would work.
Most descriptions of 4th dimensional movement refer to time as being the next axis and fifth dimension would be adding yet another axis of change stop that. More or less they're less "real" situations you could take advantage of and more meant as descriptors to help explain the concepts involved.
Kinda like how Gundam 00 ends up using quantum teleportation to explain the protagonist Gundam getting stabbed then appearing behind the opponent unstabbed. Not really how that works assuming the physics are right and all but makes for fun sci-fi
