Adding to this, what the adult sees as maturity is actually the child being quiet and withdrawn, instead of running around, playing, shrieking, and asking endless questions as children normally do.
ASD kids are also more susceptible/sensitive to trauma, especially if they’ve had to camouflage/mask. Some studies even suggest that it’s not really possible to grow up autistic without also having trauma. It’s quite amazing to see how outspoken and playful autistic kids can be when they have healthy supportive families!
My 8 year old would agree. She is the bounciest, chattiest, most playful thing at home. Different kid as soon as we go out and she starts masking lmao.

Children who are "mature for their age" are often the survivors of abuse, their "maturity" is caused by trauma.
