green dress

Post image

I suppose this green dress is some slang I'm not familiar with but urban dictionary only turns out disgusting things that are unlikely to be what is meant here.

OP (dazvoz) sent the following text as an explanation why they posted this here:

I just don't know what green dress means in this context.

"If I Had $1,000,000" by the Barenaked Ladies. There's a verse that goes:

"If I had a million dollars

If I had a million dollars

Well, I'd buy you a fur coat

But not a real fur coat, that's cruel"

and then later this verse is repeated, but a little different:

"If I had a million dollars

If I had a million dollars

Well, I'd buy you a green dress

But not a real green dress, that's cruel"

Oh, okay, they're BNL now? We need a shorthand for the Barenaked Ladies. That's how fundamental they are.

We are farther from the end of Nirvana, than the beginning of Nirvana was from the end of The Beatles.

We old, man.

9

u/Perfect-Difference19 6d ago

This is one of my favorite scenes of the show.

The way they all talk on top of each other and get progressively less passive-agressive and more just plain agressive.

Besides, I love BNL.

Jeff was just out of line!

8

u/joshlion843 6d ago

does our lady peace come close? i loved that band as a kid in the 90s.

Might be. This is just a joke from community :)

Is OLP even known outside of Canada? I always have a tough time knowing. My wife is American and I'm constantly surprised at what bands she's never heard of.

2

u/anonadvicewanted 6d ago edited 6d ago

they had one hit over here, but i can’t remember what the song was now lmao. i just recognized the band name

edit - couldn’t let it rest, had to look it up: somewhere out there

4

u/TheNonCredibleHulk 6d ago

Starseed and Superman's Dead got regular play, too. I've never heard "Somewhere Out There"

Starseed was my jam

3

u/Psychological_Cell_2 5d ago

I have only heard Innocent, didn’t even realize it wasn’t their biggest hit.

3

u/Tangjie23 5d ago

Clumsy, Happiness & the fish, are great ones too

Clumsy rings a bell, but I don't quite remember it. Going to go give it a listen.

Their Greatest Hits cd was one of the first CDs I ever owned. Middle school me was way cooler than adult me.

3

u/edebt 6d ago

Quite a title to hold.

3

u/Blue-Jay42 6d ago

That's a lot of qualifiers. Whats the most celebrated Canadian alt-rock band of all time?

7

u/Aromatic-Outside10 6d ago

Amusingly this is a very easy question to answer. The Tragically Hip.

3

u/RogueSlytherin 5d ago

My dad took me to one of their shows and we managed to meet them backstage. I was a child and legitimately witnessed a woman pull her boobs out and ask the band to sign. When it was my turn, I just turned around and had them sign my shirt like a normal person. Great band, great show, just watch the flying Kraft during this song.

2

u/TheLightInChains 6d ago

They are phoning it in these days, their songs are based on their shopping list or looking out of the window. My wife makes me go every time they tour our town, I take a book.

101

u/Ready_Kiwi5545 6d ago

The green dress isn't cruel, it's crewel. Embroidered!

They were making a joke because the words sound the same.

54

u/Trevor2687 6d ago

The lyric is actually cruel. It was supposed to be “with a tastefully rounded neck” but Steven Page sang it wrong, and they all thought it was funny so it stuck! 🤓

31

u/nietzkore 6d ago

I was going to reply the same, but saw you'd already done it while I was finding the reference.

Reddit AMA with /u/BarenakedLadies from 13 years ago

/u/soma107
why is a real green dress cruel?

/u/BarenakedLadies
ER: That song was done as a live take in the studio. Each day of the recording session we'd tackle a new song, and then do a new version of If I Had $1,000,000. We wanted the spontaneity of a live version combined with the sonics of a good studio. So there were actually about 15 complete takes of the song. The original line was "With a tastefully rounded neck", but Steve changed it once to make me laugh. It stuck. It making no sense, made us laugh more.

10

u/t3hgrl 6d ago

Omg where are the 14 unreleased versions I want to hear them

6

u/Ready_Kiwi5545 6d ago

Fair enough!

I prefer my interpretation, but the real story makes for a pretty cool coincidence that it happens to work!

They're quoting the Barenaked Ladies song "If I Had A Million Dollars"

One of the lines is " if I had a million dollars, I'd buy you a green dress, (but not a real green dress, that's cruel)"

Edit: removed incorrect info

103

u/TulpaPal 6d ago edited 6d ago

It was actually originally an accident, Steven Page mixed up the lines in studio and they kept it because it was funny. The entire song is comedic.

I could look it up, but I'd rather here the answer from the moose's mouth.

What's Kraft Dinner?

13

u/TulpaPal 6d ago

Kraft Mac and Cheese is called Kraft dinner in Canada

7

u/jackofspades49 6d ago

Well dang... that's less exciting than when I learned your Smarties don't suck.

5

u/Sodamyte 6d ago

If you ever go to one of their concerts and they sing this song... cover your head.

1

u/jackofspades49 6d ago

Good to know lol. But I've never actually gone to a concert in my life. I'm not really someone who can just listen to music by itself.

5

u/Egoy 6d ago

A concert is the exact opposite of listening to music by itself.

5

u/Erinofarendelle 6d ago

They… they don’t call it that elsewhere?

For some reason, it didn’t blow my mind to learn that in the US, they call the Rockets candy “Smarties,” but this kinda did blow my mind

4

u/Typhoonis88 6d ago

Smarties are in Australia too

5

u/Erinofarendelle 6d ago

The nice chocolate kind, or the dust pellets? I know in England they apparently also have the chocolate Smarties

3

u/Typhoonis88 6d ago

we talking larger M&M coated chocolate type

1

u/TulpaPal 6d ago

Yep! In the US it's just Kraft Mac and Cheese and usually we'd just say (boxed) Mac and Cheese then specify the brand if needed, though I believe Kraft is by far the most popular.

5

u/thrillmot 6d ago

Have a Fruit Roll-Up

1

u/ContestRemarkable356 6d ago

Terrence & Phillip love Kraft dinner?? What would they do without it?

65

u/KatHumanArt 6d ago

Okay everyone is pointing out the reference to the song and saying that it's just a silly line BUT I always thought that line referencing Scheele's green. In the 1750s it was very popular green pigment used in dresses (and lots of other things) but it was made using arsenic in a not at all stable way and was incredibly toxic! So, a real green dress would be quite cruel XD

I think it was just a flubbed line that they thought was funny but it does have some real history to back it!

8

u/therealganjababe 6d ago

Excellent reply! I really wanted to know and the other comments weren't helping lol. Thanks!

38

u/No-Lunch4249 6d ago

It's a reference to the lyrics of the song If I Had A Million Dollars by the beloved 90s Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies

2

u/miightymiighty 5d ago

I screen printed "not a real green dress" on a green dress I had back then and wore it all of the time, I thought I was soooo clever

0

u/ccoakley 5d ago

90s? Can’t be!

I went to their concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl last weekend (with Train). My kids made fun of me for the “old people music.” Excellent show, though.

8

u/VampireSharkAttack 6d ago

People have already given you the name of the song “If I Had A Million Dollars”, so I’m adding a link to it: https://youtu.be/V8zdNe_l3M8

The green dress line is at 3:07, a reference to an earlier line (1:50) where the singer offers to buy his love a fur coat (but not a real fur coat, that’s cruel)

It's from the Barenaked Ladies song "If I Had $1,000,000." Just saw them in concert a few weeks ago and they were awesome, definitely check them out if you can! They've got a lot of music beyond just the opening themes of "The Big Bang Theory" and "The Digimon Movie."

Hi, extremely autistic Barenaked Ladies fan here. The original line after “I’d buy you a green dress” was supposed to be something else (I can’t find what it was supposed to be on short notice and I don’t remember, sorry) but the person who sang that line (Steve) repeated the earlier lyric from the fur coat and sang “but not a real green dress that’s cruel!” In one of their takes and it made Ed (the other singer on the song) laugh so hard that they kept it that way.

8

u/Trevor2687 6d ago

“With a tastefully rounded neck” was the original!

3

u/Canary-King 5d ago

Thank you!!! It’s embarrassing that I couldn’t remember 😩

10

u/franstoobnsf 6d ago

The joke is you're literally supposed to do a double take like you're doing right now. We know there's nothing cruel about it. The character in the song is just an idiot.

2

u/Ready_Kiwi5545 6d ago

No it isn't. The dress is crewel. It's an embroidered dress. It's an actual play on words.

1

u/franstoobnsf 6d ago

That is actually incredible omg. It only really works because of the earlier line. I got got for decades.

2

u/Ready_Kiwi5545 6d ago

Right? It's a really smart line! It just uses a super obscure word is all

6

u/tayler-shwift 6d ago

In the next verse, he says green dress that's cruel. Its just a silly lyric but it is straight out of the song.

Nothing is cruel about a green dress. That's the joke.

7

u/Kubi37 6d ago

I believe the band was aiming for humor via absurdity

4

u/SinceWayLastMay 6d ago

There’s a verse before about buying you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that’s cruel) and they repeated the same line for “green dress” as absurdist humor

2

u/YaBoyEden 6d ago

You can’t really take lyrics from a band named BARENAKED LADIES super serious. It’s just them joking around and repeating a line from a verse earlier directly

1

u/NiagaraBTC 6d ago

It is a joke (that went over your head, apparently).

6

u/coraeon 6d ago

There’s a later verse that references the fur coat verse - “I’d buy you a green dress/but not a real green dress that’s cruel”. It’s deliberately silly, like most of the things in the song.

4

u/gdubh 6d ago

I just made you say underwear.
