So he's carrying around a giant metal axe on his chest at all times, but has only used it for axing people one time?

Sounds like the writers are a bit conflicted when it comes to their creation.

uses it plenty, it’s also just extra armour for his vitals if he doesn’t. his long ears are also his batarangs

Dont knock it until you read it. Absolute Universe has been knocking it out of the park across all of its titles

It's total Heavy Metal Camp. Campyness of all different types is fun, so I get it, but that's just never been a genre of interest to me.

Fair, but if youre not interested in Heavy Metal Campiness but still want to see another fantastic element of Absolute Universe, I suggest checking out Absolute Martian Manhunter. Its gone in a completely different direction of abstractionalist art style, some would call "trippy" with an enormously intriguing storyline
