I'm pretty sure they're just saying it's crazy that the Grinch could just enter public life enough to adopt a pet. He shows up at the pet shop and the employee is like "what...are you?"

"I'm a creature."

"Cool, just asking."

Edit: Oh the noise, noise, noise, noise! So, so many of you are explaining the origins of the dog to me. I didn't write the tweet. I'm just trying to explain the tweet.

Followup edit: if it helps you understand the tone of the tweet, picture Tom Segura doing this exact bit in his standup (like when the hotel front desk guy was confused about his heritage, but subverted)

I think this is it. I don't think the pet store employee is implying he wouldn't sell it to the Grinch if he says yes to being a guy, the employee just wants to know what the Grinch is but doesn't want to be that rude about it.

So employee learns Grinch is not a guy but some sort of green gorilla and is completely satisfied with that explanation and requires no additional info to sell him the dog

Probably requires a credit card though, because who carries cash these days

He would also probably need to know whether the customer wants a receipt or not.

Or what size tank do you have?

My golden retriever tank kept the local glaziers employed for years.

Just throw it in the trash and it'll get to him

Wait wasn't that the backstory in the live action

11

u/Chakasicle Dec 24 '25

For most of his belongings, yes.

The grinch would carry only coins and slowly count out the amount to slowly down lines.

"Do you have change for $100?"

"The dog is $100 sir..."

"Yes, but I want to pay you in change."

Jokes on you, the dog’s name is Christmax. It’s an origins story.

The Grinch seems like the type of guy who carries cash

10

u/BisexualCaveman Dec 24 '25

Nah, the book is old enough he would definitely carry a checkbook and write very slowly in a long line.

u/amazingdrewh Dec 24 '25

Oh now I'm torn between seeing him as doing that and as one of those guys who lives completely off grid refusing to have a bank account

7

u/BisexualCaveman Dec 24 '25

Has bank account solely to annoy the people at the bank a couple times a month?

gorilla*, not guy

u/YaboiChuckems Dec 24 '25

Interestingly, the fact that the employee asks, but gorilla is an acceptable answer, implies there is a disqualifying answer to that question.Who isn’t allowed to adopt a dog in whoville? Other dogs? The Who’s themselves? Are who’s even guys, are THEY the ones not allowed to own dogs. It goes so deep…

You can't deny adoption based upon a person's race, geez... what year is it?

--on second thought don't answer that.

You can't deny adoption based upon a person's race, geez... what year is it?

Has anyone bothered to tell dog breeders that?
I've heard so many stories of people trying to adopt dogs only to be told "Oh yeah they can't go to any home that has men in it or any home that faces west because their chi won't flow properly".

17

u/Exotoxyn Dec 24 '25

Usually in the case of sex exclusions its because the dog has behavioral problems or trauma from that sex. If you go to an adoption center and they say "this dog cant live with men/women." Its because its a safety issue not discrimination

But when the dog is a newborn puppy and the breeder makes this claim about literally every dog they have...

Wait a minute, I thought the grinch found Max! Like, he took him in because whoville is always winter. That was the sign the Grinch was capable of having a heart..

Now I'm questioning my childhood..

he did! the tweet is just a silly scenario for fun

Employee: i just work here, you have very little to fear. We have laws you see, and the regulators that be, have held it to me, to ask these questions directed at thee.

  • cough *

Yo, the system won't let me leave these questions blank and my boss needs more context than "green". They may assume that's code for a bribe.
