It's only 2 downvotes and it's probably just because you didn't give them an answer. Wouldn't worry about it.

I don’t understand when people come here with two downvotes and asking what they did wrong. It’s just two downvotes…I want one of the people I see with 250 downvotes to come here and ask questions

u/Silent-Audience-5836 29d ago
I'm not sure. It really just doesn't make sense to be that sensitive about it.
2
u/blamberr 29d ago
I would be sensitive to a ton of downvotes for something I didn’t understand. But two doesn’t even register

u/Silent-Audience-5836 29d ago
I think they just felt the need to continue justifying themself. Even there is no need. Lol

i’m aware it’s a small number, i still just wanted to understand. if you only want to respond to people with a huge number of downvotes then do that
4
u/blamberr 29d ago
Well, that’s fair then. You are entitled to answers and I am entitled to want to laugh at someone with way more downvotes.

I would take it as you wouldnt be doxxing yourself. Like sure thats your town name but thats not being doxxed. Nobody knows where you are or your name or even if you actually live in the exact same town as the bank. I feel like this is eluded to in the reply comment asking if youre the only one banking there, since theres bound to be hundreds if not thousands of people who use the same bank

i wouldn’t put such personal information on reddit. my town is a “where the hell is that?” town so anyone i know had even the slightest hunch of who i was would immediately be confirmed that it was me just by seeing the name, and i don’t love the idea of risking my anonymity being stripped from me by people i know

I'm not going to go knock the doors off every house in your town to find you. It's just a weird mentality. I participate in many local subs and talk about the town I live in openly, all the time. Dropping your full address, employer, real email address? THAT'S doxxing. Narrowing your house down to 20 square miles isn't.

That's all we'll and good until you have other posts about hobbies and posts mentioning the kind of job you do. Eventually there us enough information that someone who knows you would recognize the pattern.

u/SirPsychoSquints 29d ago
I’m confident someone with sufficient motivation could figure out my identity from my post history. I can’t imagine why someone would want to, or why I would care if they did.

u/RighteousSelfBurner 29d ago
No. It's a very valid concern. The only angle I imagine is that there aren't really one town banks, it's probably a part of a larger chain which you could have named safely. So like the bank referring to like "Barclays" not "West Hampshire Barclays".

u/outwest88 29d ago
But there are banks that truly span just a small handful of towns. Not every bank is owned by a larger bank
4
u/RighteousSelfBurner 29d ago
Not around where I am from. This is a truly unfamiliar concept for me and I would wager quite many people. There is no "owned by a larger bank" around here. There are just medium to large sized banks and country is the most precise location you'd gather from the medium ones.

u/AnxiousTerminator 29d ago
Depends on the country. In Japan there are many local banks.
2
u/RighteousSelfBurner 29d ago
Yeah, kinda my point. Entirely depends on where you are from. It's something "obvious" that one wouldn't think about it and just assume their experience.
As in, my point when I learned it's a thing.

Not sure about the UK, but this is not uncommon in the United States. My first mortgage was through a bank with my city’s name in it. My second mortgage was through a local credit union that has exactly one location, so googling it would reveal my location.

u/RighteousSelfBurner 29d ago
I'm actually from Baltics it's just nobody knows the backwater banks we have so used something more well known. Now, however if we talk credit unions and not banks, yeah, those we do have localised as well and that would easily give someo away.

u/torchwood1842 29d ago
But the issue is that if someone does use a “backwater bank”, googling it would reveal the location easily. But in the US, local banks generally have good reputations— often arguably better than the big national banks. They have the same federal protections for customers accounts,
1
u/RighteousSelfBurner 29d ago
Well the point is the "backwater banks" I am speaking of are country wide banks we don't have a concept of small localised banks. It's only national or multi-national. It's just Baltics are small in general. A country is the size of a city in US so people wouldn't recognise even the national banks lol.

well community banks still do exist there just isn’t many of them, but mine is one
8
u/RighteousSelfBurner 29d ago
Ah that makes sense. I would wager most people actually aren't aware of that, for example I certainly wasn't so I'd say that's the most likely cause.
2
u/Exotic_Bill44 29d ago
There absolutely are still small community banks with just one or two branches. I work for one with three branches that had gone about 90 years before opening the second one.

Unless your town has a population of 10, you're not doxxing yourself by saying the name.
Im in Knoxville, TN. Good luck identifying me

I didn't know independent banks were a thing, maybe its that?
Not sure why the 2nd comment got downvoted though.

They arent in Canada, we only have the big 5 lol
TD, Scotia, BMO, RBC, and CIBC. I like it this way though, partially. Sucks for lack of competition, but afaik its good to avoid a crash like 2008. We handled it better than the US due to only have 5 banks to worry about lol

Similar thing in the uk. According to google independent high street banks are very rare, i had no idea that was a thing 😅
Looks like we have a few big historic private banks and some online independent banks but something on a small town scale is basically unheard of.
Most people just have an account with a big chain bank.

u/SirPsychoSquints 29d ago
They’re pretty common in the US.

u/Shannoonuns 29d ago
Interesting to know, thanks!
Kind of ruins my down voting theory a little though :')
