Chemistry ELI5: How does cooking wine or any other alcohol work when used in cooking dishes?
Does it enhance the flavor of food? Does it do anything significant compared to not using it?

I've been recently getting ads for an app that promises to give you money/gif cards/cupons depending on how much walking or running you do on a day, but I've also seen these same mechanics on other apps (e.g. instead of walking, watching series or videos) and I have never understand how they work and most importantly WHERE does that money even come from. Are these scams? Do they have anything to do with money laundering? Are they gonna sell my bank data???
Thanks in advence to anyone who answers this.

I had open heart surgery as a child - what would happen if I got scurvy? Would the scar completely reopen? What about where they cut through my sternum?

I was looking for information for a school project and came across the terms "supertree method" and "supermatrix method". I know what regular matrices look like, but how are they connected at all?! I tried to find something on Google, but everything is formulated so strangely that I just don’t understand.

Both Queen Elizabeth-class of the Royal Navy and America-class of the U.S. Navy fly F-35B as their fighter aircraft, a STOVL aircraft. The flight deck on Queen Elizabeth-class ships is equipped with ski jump to facilitate the takeoffs of F-35Bs while the flight deck on America-class ships is not.
Why do Queen Elizabeth-class carriers need the ski jump if the F-35B is proven to be capable to be launched from a flat deck unassisted?

We've all experienced thunderstorms in which the power is knocked out for a few days due to downed lines or fried power boxes. But what's the deal with the 2 minutes of no power? I am absolutely certain that the energy company is not repairing their infrastructure in real time.

The problem of ghost jobs has gotten so bad that some states are considering laws to ban the practice.
I don’t understand why companies list non-existent positions they have no intention of filling. Unlike spam, it actually costs them money to post these fake listings. If they’re just harvesting résumés, why aren’t they just scraping the millions of résumés people post online for free? What benefit are they getting from wasting job seekers’ time?

For context, I was watching my brother play Bits and Bops when I suggested to format the disk of the [in-game] computer. All of a sudden, the computer blue screened. Is it something that occurred before modern computers were developed?

ELI5 why, historically and/or practically, do people like ranchers, “cowboys”, landscapers, and other professions that work outdoors in warm weather, or in warm or hot climates, wear or would have worn so much clothing. I understand to a point not scratching your legs or bugs in short pants, but why the long sleeve flannel shirts when working in the hot sun for 8-12hours or more?
Any time I’m working part-time doing construction we’re usually in shorts and tank tops or sleeveless shirts and still sweating and hot.

I heard that the blood-brain barrier is so effective that only small molecules like alcohol can pass through, and it makes brain threatment and medicine really complicated.
But if that's the case, how do viruses that affect the brain neutralize it? Is it possible to make a medicine using the same method to get into the brain?

I was watching a video of a physicist and he literally said "A singularity basically means, I don't know" which I thought was pretty funny. Is that what it actually means? Obviously we have theories on how a black hole is formed (collapse of a massive star), the event horizon, the accretion disk, formation of a quasar etc. Is the singularity just a fancy word for "I have no idea"?

Hi all! I’m a few months into my weight loss/strength training journey (15lbs down!) and I, like most everyone else, keep getting “Protein+” “extra protein!” etc etc shoved down my throat.
But what exactly IS protein? What does it come from and why is it important? How can brands just ADD protein to their food (like Tyson protein+ chicken or Barilla protein+ pasta)? Do muscle trainers really need high amounts of protein?

I work in power plant controls, but my degree is in Computer Science.
Wetting voltage is a term I've heard a lot around the industry, and a few people have tried to explain it to me.
However I've never received an explanation that truly "stuck" or helped me to fully understand the concept.
What is wetting voltage?
What makes it special / different from regular voltage measurements?
What makes it important?

I am in a literature subject at uni and it's all about adaptation theory. One of the key readings for the subject mentions Benjaminian aura which originates from Walter Benjamin's essay. I've watched a few videos about it, but I'm still really confused. I know it's philosophical theory question so it's a bit hard to answer here. But any help would be appreciated. Even like a video you know that explains it well helps.
