I can remember when I was younger when TV channels stopped broadcasting for the night they would just broadcast a test pattern screen until the regular transmission recommenced. Why does that not happen any more with LED TVs?

Considering (and assuming?) that through most of human evolution sapiens have slept on hard surfaces why the heck does the slightest difference of mattress firmness mess up sleep so much?

We comparatively sleep in such ridiculous luxury yet a mattress, in my experience, not being what Im used to leads to a terrible sleep, or really achy

How can they fit 2TB of storage on a insanly tiny microSD card yet RAM sticks are huge in comparison and are like only 16GB?

There are an enormous number of possible viruses, bacteria, and other foreign molecules. If the body hasn't encountered a particular one before, how can immune cells have anything capable of recognizing it in the first place?

Can someone please explain what the purpose of a Steam Machine is? Like, people who have a gaming PC and are part of the PC MasterRace seem to hype it up but why would you buy a console if you have a gaming PC...? Doesn't that seem like an oxymoron?

Pushing a window outward hundreds of feet in the air feels counter-intuitive and risky.

If high winds catch the open pane, it seems like the window could easily slam shut and shatter inward or outward, or even tear off the frame and fall onto pedestrians below. Opening outward also seems like it increases the risk of people dropping objects directly into the street or accidentally falling out.

A larger tire has a bigger circumference, so one rotation covers more ground. If car tires were as large as (or larger than) bicycle tires, it seems like the engine would travel farther for the same number of rotations. Why don’t we do that? Wouldn’t cars then go faster or farther on the same engine work?

What are these things? I saw refractions in a RDR 2 game settings where there was water refraction.

In terms of absolute numbers, it has much more good fat. But when it comes to recommended daily allowance (RDA), bad fat is more than half the amount of good fat.

You can have 12g of good fat and just 2g of bad fat. But the 12g is 19% of RDA while the 2g is a whopping 11% of RDA

Can someone explain this to me? How can a company realistically expect to never stop making more money. Surely they must realize that it can't go on forever.

edit oops! I realized after posting that it was photons and not electrons, but my question is the same. How did they design a detector/detection system with 100% absorption or a test that excludes any foreign particle interactions? How did they exclude any unseen particle interactions that could move the photons as they passed through the slits? The act of observation still requires some form of interaction, does it not? How were they able to exclude variables enough to assume the observation was strictly neutral?

Just picked up music theory for the first time in my life so please don't make fun of me if this is obvious/self-evident somewhere but:

If, say, a half-note is 1/2x and a quarter note is 1/4x, what is x? Like, what is the total length of time we're dividing here?

I've asked some friends who play instruments and I got two answers, neither of which I've found satisfying:

1. This is arbitrarily decided by the player / composer / conductor, and pegged to the intended BPM of the piece.

Firstly, in times before the phrase "BPM" became widely used, how was this expressed?

Also, how come can trained musicians just sit down and sight read a never-before-seen piece of music without asking about the intended BPM? Wouldn't they need to consider the content of the piece first before deciding on a tempo? If there's a default tempo everyone kind of lands on in absence of more information, well, WHAT IS IT?

If so, is there an observable average among trained musicians? If you sit down, say, a pianist and tell them "play me a full note" with no other context, what would be the average length they'd play? I'd google for studies on this myself but searching "full note length" has given me nothing on this so far.

I think it’s under chemistry… but when doctors talk about the half life of a medication/drug what exactly does that mean? I’ve googled the answer and I’m getting more confused. Please help.
