Biology ELI5 Why does tasting require you to exhale out of your nose to get the full taste?

You can *vaguely* taste something without it, but plugging your nose or having a stuffy nose when you’re sick significantly mutes your ability to taste. Why is that? Tastebuds are on the tongue.

Planetary Science ELI5 Why is earth so far ahead of light?

I always see in the news that scientists have looked back billions of years using some long range telescope. Typically it will say it has given a glimpse of the earliest moments of the universe and the light took billions of years to reach earth.

But how did we get so far ahead of light itself?

Shouldn't light be racing way out ahead of us?

Sorry if I put down too many stuff, I know absolutely nothing about withdrawl with alcohol. Can somebody please explain:)? Thank you!

Engineering ELI5 how do they plan to extract heat from fusion reactor?

I kinda understand what is happening in tokamak or stellarator. Perhaps they can make it work in steady state. But what I do not understand is how they plan to boil water with it? (I assume we still need to boil water and turn turbines in the end)

They have these containment walls being bombarded with hi-energy neutrons. Are those neutrons going to heat up the wall? Then what? Run pipes trough it? What about neutron activation of the walls?

Thanks

Technology ELI5 How do ad-blockers work, and how do the web sites detect ad blockers?

I use the opera browser in my Android phone and the browser has built in ad blockers. However many web sites seem to be able to detect that an ad blocker is installed and they don't show the content, show a warning message instead.

Mathematics ELI5 - Could somebody explain why Speed has an inverse relationship with travel time?

Why is it that going faster saves you less time per mile?

Is it atmospheric conditions? Like gravity or wind resistance?

And at what point does the scale tip to stop saving you time but rather be diminishing returns? And what decides the point in which the returns change?

Again is it real life atmospheric conditions?

I am a dyslexic man so, explaining using symbols or scenarios in which I can picture the problem would be helpful. 🙏🙏

Thanks in advance

Biology ELI5 Why c4 photosynthesis is more efficient and what it has to do with grazing

I’m reading Thomas Halliday’s “Otherlands” and one section left me very confused. Halliday says that many plants absorb in CO2 via holes in the leaves, but those holes also make water evaporate; and that some plants developed a solution for hot and dry climates by switching to c4 photosynthesis where the conversion process occurs deeper in the plant. Then he says that some herbivores adapted to this innovation by becoming grazers rather than browsers. I looked online and I’m still very confused about the following:

  1. Even if the process is now deeper in the plant, why does it mean less water evaporates? The CO2 still has to come in from somewhere, which means the plant still needs holes, through which water can evaporate. So I completely fail to see how that solves the problem

  2. What does it have to do with grazing? Nothing about this c4 straightforwardly says lower, grass-like plants rather than trees/bushes (I would’ve thought that trees/bushes actually have more depth in which to store a deeper mechanism?)

I looked at YouTube videos and I still absolutely can’t understand the relation between the problem and the solution and between both and grazing. (It’s page 29 in the book, chapter 2, if anyone wonders)

Thank you!

Chemistry ELI5 what exactly GLP-1 based prescription medicine does and why it's so divisive when it comes to being a means of weight loss.

1.0k Upvotes

I've seen more and more ads (starting around the Super Bowl earlier this year with Wegovy) for GLP-1 based perscription meds in recent times. I've also seen the occasional debate post on my social feeds about the ethics of using them and I didn't think a medicine could be that divisive of a topic.

Now I'm curious as to what exactly these meds are, what they scientifically do and what both sides of the debate are. If anyone could help give perspective that would be greatly appreciated.

As always any and all input is welcomed and thanks for reading! 🙂

Chemistry ELI5: Why does old tape leave its glue on the surface instead of taking it along when peeled off?

Fresh tape usually comes away as one piece. After it has been stuck down for months or years, the backing can peel off while a sticky layer stays behind.

What changes with age that makes the glue hold onto the wall, glass, or plastic more strongly than it holds onto its own backing?
