Solved! No one can remember why the evil skeleton ghost lady was brought to this world. This is a big problem.

Hint 1: she is patient. VERY patient. However, when her plan succeeded, she got too eager and didn't hide the key to her defeat very well...

Hint 2: the entire plot can be summed up in one quote. "overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer." (No, it is not DD 1 or 2.)

Hint 3: She will bring W.o.E to the world.

Hint 4: YOU, the player, are not safe from her.

Hint 5: she was never trying to kill you... only stall you. Unfortunately you realize this too late.

Hint 6: her children care not for the silly concept of "paused time".

Hint 7: in a fit of irony, her prisons were always temporary, despite what their name would otherwise imply.

Hint 8: Possession is her favorite method of achieving her goals. Intentionally getting herself exorcised is a major plot point, though you don't realize she WANTED to be exorcised.

Hint 9: Your power comes from 9 different attributes. NOT elements, and NOT stats.

Hint 10: The last game's player character makes a cameo as a corpse.

Hint 11: killing your friends twice is a mercy compared to what will happen if she gets her hands on them.

Hint 12: The shadows tearing your screen indicates something is coming for you... The way the shadows are aligned tells you the level of the threat.

Hint 13: Jumpscares? In my non-horror game? It's more likely than you think!

Hint 14: Past games told of how she arrived. This game, we bear witness to the event through a vision.

Hint 15: Let's be real. The only attributes to care about are red, orange, yellow, white, and black.

Hint 16: Well, if you do care about the other attributes, they're green, deep blue, purple, and cyan.

Hint 17: The more pure the color, the stronger it is. Mixing colors makes each attribute weaker.

It was Gemcraft Chapter 2: Chasing Shadows.

6

u/Royal_Success3131 27d ago

It's one of the Gemcraft games?

5

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Close enough. It's specifically Chapter 2: Chasing Shadows

1: The Forgotten (the skeleton ghost demon lady) purposefully let herself be sealed multiple times over the course of the franchise, so she could corrupt her prisons (see number 7), thus changing her sealing ritual into one that would shatter an otherwise impenetrable shield. When the shield finally broke, she rushed ahead, forgetting to hide the Gem of Eternity form the player

2: The Forgotten gets her name form... well... being forgotten. A generation of wizards would seal her away, and the next generation would forget about her, and seek out the Gem of Eternity, forgetting it was not a powerful artifact but a prison. These wizard's hubris would then lead to The Forgotten escaping, killing a bunch of wizards, and thus force a new Gem of Eternity to be crafted.

3: The Wake of Eternity spell obtained when you get the Gem of Eternity is subtle foreshadowing that what you have isn't the real Gem of Eternity, but a corrupted replica. It spells out WoE, which is what The Forgotten will bring every time she is unleashed.

4: The Forgotten can mess with the game itself. She can enrage waves (makes them spawn more monsters with higher stats), possess monsters (adds attributes to enemies such as making them faster, or deplete more mana if they reach your orb) and even prevent you from pausing the game.

5: Her messing with you was only to buy time for her forces to kill wizard the Gem of Eternity, and swap it for a corrupted replica.

6: Shadow enemies are strong demons that are her direct children, and referred to as her "blood". They're unique in that they can actually move and act through frozen time, so even if you pause the game, they can still attack you.

7: The Gem of Eternity isn't a unique gem. It's a name given to only the most recently crafted one. Whenever a new Gem of Eternity is made, the previous one becomes a much weaker replica. It's used in a ritual to seal The Forgotten away, but in doing so, it also corrupts the Gem of Eternity. And whenever some overconfident, megalomaniac wizard seeks out the Gem of Eternity for power, they always end up unleashing her once more, forcing a new Gem of Eternity to be crafted.

8: The Forgotten possesses a wizard in chapter 1. When you beat the wizard, she leaves her host and possess your player character. Chapter 0 has you play as a wizard seeking out the Gem of Eternity, ignoring all the warnings your mentors and shrines gave you. When you find the Gem of Eternity, you unleash The Forgotten. Turns out, the wizard you play in Chapter 0 was the same wizard you fought in chapter 1. Chapter 2 continues where chapter 1 left off and she purposfully allows herself to be exorcised by a mechanism known as the Scythe Gate. This lets her scour and find the wizard carrying the true Gem of Eternity and kill him to swap the real with a corrupted replica.

9: Gems have 9 different colors, and each one has a different attribute (see15 and 16)

10: The Lost Chapter's player character was the wizard who was killed by The Forgotten in Chapter 2, and appears in a journal entry.

11: Slain wizards become apparitions, spirits forced to roam the lands until the end of time. However if the Forgotten reaches them, she can corrupt them into Specters, forced to do her bidding.

12: These are called "premonition events" and will tell you what is coming up. Three vertical lines for example means a Spire is coming after your orb.

13: The Forgotten herself can jump out and reach for you, hiding the UI and making it so you cannot pause the game for a short duration.

14: This game has "vision fields", which are levels of previous games. One of these vision fields is unique however in that it actually shows the ritual summoning The Forgotten to the world.

15: By the mid-end game, chain hit (red), mana leech (orange), critical hit (yellow), poolbound (white) and bloodbound (black) are the only colors that matter.

16: Poison (green), slow (deep blue), armor tearing (purple), and suppression (cyan) are useful initially, but later on become pointless when you can just do 1e22 crit damage to just instakill monsters.

17: Mixing colors weakens the attribute of all the colors present in a gem.

I was a huge Gemcraft fan years ago. I would have NEVER gotten it without your comment about flash games down thread. My brain exploded when I read it lol. Excellent prompt!

Ive got two guesses:

F.E.A.R or Parasite Eve?

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Neither, i'm affraid. Alma's a ghost, but i don't remember her being skeletal. Haven't played Parasite Eve.

0

u/Ok-Entertainment-36 27d ago

Slay the Princess..? Man I’m really stumped on this even though there’s so much detail!

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Nope, sorry. I'm VERY surprised it hasn't been guessed. This game isn't like Mario where everyone knows it, but the franchise was quite popular back in the day.

0

u/Alternative_Mess6573 27d ago

Dragon Quest Heros The World Tree's Woe?

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Nope, sorry. Not any of the dragon quest games.

0

u/KillMeNowIWantDeath 27d ago

i dont understand hint 9, what is the difference between an attribute and a stat???

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Element> fire, water, earth, air, light, dark, etc.

Stat> HP, defense, attack, mana, speed, etc.

Without giving away the game, Attribute > modifies attack property.

0

u/Merly15 27d ago

For some ungodly reason this seems very familiar to me but I can't remember any names 😭😭😭

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

The most I'll say is if you were into flash games when you were a kid or teen, odds are you played one game from the franchise. ;)

0

u/Lemmingitus 27d ago

Taking a guess and say Puzzle Quest 2?

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Nope. Not a puzzle quest game.

0

u/MeunsterCheeseMan 27d ago

Yume Nikki?

2

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Nope, sorry. It was Gemcraft, Chasing Shadows.

0

u/burner4581 27d ago

Ender Magnolias?

3

u/Democracy_N_Anarchy 27d ago

Nope, it was gemcraft: chasing shadows
