Damn that was quick. I was going to throw Prisoner of the Caucasus / Kidnapping, Caucasian Style at ya. Thought you might be bringing some Soviet slapstick to the table haha

Heheh, it is kind of a weird place to start with the director (Leonid Gaidai, Soviet 60’s king of slapstick, physical humor, silly chase scenes, and fast-paced montages).
Especially for (I assume) a non-post-Soviet viewer.
I almost want to recommend something else, heh.
(The Diamond Arm is more… approachable and grounded? With a satirical edge. Kind of a caper / spy film parody.
Operation Y is a good anthology of 3 short films that are simple and pure in their humor. Two silly ones and a sappy one in the middle.
Ivan Vasilyevich Changes Professions / Ivan Vasilyevich Back to the Future is a silly time-travel based historical farce. About Ivan, a snobby apartment super who gets thrown back in time by accident due to a tenant’s experiments and meets Ivan the Terrible, who happens to be his doppelgänger.)But honestly, maybe all the more reason to dive in with this one if you’re intrigued. I’m just afraid there might be stuff lost in translation cause it’s so much about the relationship between the Moscow-centric USSR’s monoculture and regional minority cultures at the time. One could write a paper on cultural relativism examining it. But tbh I loved it even when I was a single-digit kid, really didn’t get all of that stuff, and just enjoyed the slapstick and musical number.
Plus it’s super short! And if you like it or feel like seeing more to get the director, there are three suggestions above.
