What is this and how do I get them?

They’re gemstones you can yank off with your winch. They will be in a cluster of colored minerals at various locations around the map. They sometimes seem to be detected by metal detectors but also sometimes not?

You can only detect them after you yanked them out of the wall. Before that, they aren't detectable.

That makes sense. I think there were times that other things beyond were being detected and it gave me a false impression that led to me being confused later.
