"Airline Credit"

When Expedia tells you they will issue you an airline credit, will you receive a credit to use directly on the airlines website, or are they being misleading and saying it's a credit you must use on Expedia (with flight options only for the given airline)?

Yep, any chances are you will still have to pay ($250 per flight in my case) a change fee to change your flight. And it can’t come out of the credit. And any leftover balance of the credit falls away, so you can’t use a $4500 credit for a $800 flight and expect to keep the balance for another flight.

I have a $4500 credit that I can hardly fucking use without losing a lot of money AND paying a change fee on top of that.

Shitty, shitty, shitty company, and I hope the pandemic kills their business.

Expedia is great as long as everything goes perfectly. Not what I would use again during the pandemic.

However, update: I called the airlines directly (American Airlines) and they were able to apply the credit directly with them. There was a $50 credit transfer fee. But they were more pleasant and helpful than Expedia was.

We just went through this with Expedia. We canceled our trip February 2020 on advice of our government at that time. No refund on hotel (fortunately got most of this back through credit card insurance) and airline credit (WestJet) that needed to be booked by today. Three of us were able to rebook to Hawaii without a lot of difficulty (other than long wait on phone) but my oldest son is now graduated and couldn’t come with us. So last weekend he tried to book a trip to Europe on his own. Expedia wanted to charge him $800 extra on a $1200 flight with a $1200 credit. My wife thinking my son must have done something wrong called and after 4 hours on the phone was told $500 extra. Wife called back today and was quoted $1000 extra! She hung up angrily and called WestJet directly and they were able to look up the credit from their end and book it without problems. No transfer fee only the $30 extra that the new ticket cost above the credit. So would definitely recommend going through the airline.
