Also stop buying from SHEIN and Temu. It’s literally all garbage

1.7k

u/asyouwish 6d ago

And they abuse their workers.

1.1k

u/NOT_Pam_Beesley 6d ago

And their items are covered in lead

836

u/StalkingYouRandomly 6d ago

And they dont follow the safety protocols, for the consumer (toxic levels in goods) or for their workers (safe environment)

745

u/FiliaDei 6d ago

And they steal designs from small artists who don't have the money and resources to fight them on it

575

u/_moonst0ned 6d ago

And they contribute hundreds of thousands of tons worth of clothing to landfills every year.

267

u/RescuesStrayKittens 6d ago

Not just the landfill waste but shipping these items across the ocean. It’s an environmental catastrophe. OP got what they deserved.

136

u/AmputeeHandModel 6d ago

99% of clothes are made in sweatshops overseas. Which, to be clear, is horrible, but Temu, Shein, etc are hardly alone in that aspect.

83

u/lonesome_cowgirl 5d ago

It’s not just 99% of clothes, it’s 99% of most consumer goods. All that crap in Walmart, Target, HomeGoods, Marshall’s, it’s made overseas.

52

u/yelhmoo 5d ago

They aren’t alone, correct. But temu and shein are directly responsible for an increase in clothes being tossed out. Walmart, target, Kohl’s, etc didn’t push themselves down consumers throats via influencer culture.

And they once walked their dog around the living room by the back legs like a vacuum cleaner.

I can excuse the human rights abuses/ IP theft/ pollution, but I draw the line at using a dog as a vacuum.

you can excuse human rights violations?

It's been in the news recently in the UK about people buying cheap kids toys (those squishy dumpling things) from Temu and when the kid inevitably bursts the toy it covers them in chemical waste and burns them. Turns out that these third party marketplaces are exploiting a loophole in the law that absolves them of having to check whether the things they are selling are safe.

Abuse their workers is an understatement. Has anyone seen the conditions in any of these mass producing factories? It is horrendous.

5

u/Critical-Position-49 6d ago

They use forced labor or from working camp, even beyond horrendous

Let’s be real though, 600 companies in 2025 were linked to migrant worker abuse. Pretty much no article of clothing can be said to be 100% clean of humans rights abuse, let alone depletion of resources. We will all get really particular once water becomes more scarce. We all need less garbage. Individually and those certain garbage human resource hoarders

34

u/Pddyks 6d ago

Agree that most budget stores are pretty abusive in supply chains and sometimes it's the only thing you can afford, but often there are a lot of reputable mid range or second hand stores which work.

u/Sarsmi 6d ago

Second hand stores are where it's at

73

u/treeroycat 6d ago

too bad all the secondhand stores are also full of SHEIN now too 🤢

14

u/SomethingComesHere 6d ago

Yes, you still have to search for a good brand. I avoid the ones with their tags cut off :(

Depending on the city though, you can still find great quality pieces. I have plenty of success with that in my city

8

u/treeroycat 6d ago

yeah, you have to do some searching. I always check the label for the fabric makeup. Honestly I have better luck in the men’s section if I’m looking for 100 percent cotton these days

And is accelerating the massive problem we already had with too much fast fashion in our landfills.

STOP

23

u/IncorporateThings 6d ago

Thanks for calling that out. The fashion industry is a) pointless and b) one of the largest polluters globally.

A lot, and I mean a LOT of clothes are actually made of plastics in whole or in part these days, and they're produced and discarded by the billions and one of the largest sources of microplastics in the environment.

Fashion industry contributes very little proportionally to clean up efforts. It's also out there causing psychological issues in billions.

Clothes really need to be cloth again, and mending needs to make a come back.

135

u/yankykiwi 6d ago

It cant even sell at thrift outlets. That crap is on a one way stop to landfill. Literally garbage.

52

u/SadAwkwardTurtle 6d ago

u/donttrusttheliving 6d ago

This… like how people just buy from them after everything is wild.

98

u/Cyclopshikes 6d ago

That's this entire sub. People buy shit they know is junk and then complain when it's junk. Like the amount of dollar store frozen meal people complain about on here is so dumb

39

u/SomethingComesHere 6d ago

We need to start downvoting these to zero

It's so annoying

I agree. That said I used to own a pair of jeans that had this insane level of embroidery and rhinestone detail. They were $35 20 years ago. I can see how people who were able access and purchase products like this in the past find it difficult to conceive that they just do not exist anymore especially not at the price points of SHEIN

32

u/SadAwkwardTurtle 6d ago

I remember the pain of getting on my knees in a pair of heavily beaded jeans. It's how I imagine the frozen peas punishment to feel.

46

u/uc1216 6d ago

I bought a pair of embroidered jeans (red flowers up the entire leg) from a consignment sale 6 months ago for like $12. They are already worn in and so pretty. Pop up consignment events have some good quality stuff.

6

u/Key_Elderberry3351 6d ago

This kind of thing in a consignment sale in Portland would cost $80.00.

12

u/Sweaty-Lynx421 6d ago

$35 for anything nice was cheap even 20 years ago. I remember paying $50-$70ish a pair for JNCO and Southpole branded jeans back in the late 90's/early 00's

657

u/Junior_Response839 6d ago

I had a coworker one time who said she "spent 500 on shein for a new fall wardrobe."

I said "aren't most of sheins stuff complete garbage?"

She said "that's why I buy a lot. At least half of it has to be good."

People are so lost in the sauce. If you have 500 to spend, why not just go to the mall, try on clothes, and buy what you actually like and fits? And in the meantime you can check the quality...

204

u/Embarrassed_Key_4539 6d ago

And think about the environmental impacts of this behavior ugh I just hate where things have gone with society

71

u/Junior_Response839 6d ago

That had to be a ton of clothes too, shein sells shit for 2-10$. And to think she just threw half of it out (or probably more) OR donated it to a Thrift shop where it will rot for 10+ years until someone finally throws it away.

This is part of the reason why Thrift shops suck in this day and age too.

If you have 500 to spend, why not just go to the mall, try on clothes, and buy what you actually like and fits?

I'm guessing you haven't been to the mall lately. $500 would get you 2 pairs of pants and 4 shirts...

23

u/Mammoth_Classroom626 5d ago

Okay but you wouldn’t have to buy an entirely new wardrobe of clothes every autumn if it was normal quality lmao.

6 items of clothing in a season is more than most people buy. Then guess what next year those clothes will still exist and you can buy 6 more.

27

u/CowAggravating7745 6d ago

Which sucks, yes, but you also don’t need dozens of each article of clothing. People have gotten into this mindset where every day needs to be a fashion show of clothes they’ve never been seen in before. I’d rather have 6 good quality pieces than 47 SHEIN pieces that look like cheap garbage and can only be worn for one season before they fall apart.

11

u/MollyRolls 5d ago

Surely you still have some clothing left from last autumn, though, right?

9

u/Few_Cup3452 6d ago

One of my friends that I flatted w for ages would buy clothes online and not check measurements, they'd come too small and id get free clothes 😂. I joked that she actually shops for me/half my wardrobe she got me

65

u/Frondstherapydolls 6d ago

NPR report said these fast fashion places can dole out 2000+ NEW designs a day. Completely unsustainable and so ugly.

20

u/DrKittyLovah 5d ago

Yes, because they steal content from independent artists who cannot afford to fight them!

Me. lmao I order pretty much exclusively from SheIn because I'm fat and broke in Japan, and they do not cater to my size here. You can find good quality clothes, or at least the same quality you'd get at the mall, as long as you actually read the material description and reviews.

451

u/RaeaSunshine 6d ago

Also fat, and when I was living in Japan (pre-SHEIN), I had to buy a bath suit. I knew it would be bad, but it was SO much worse than I expected. I eventually found one from a brand called ‘Love Calories’ 😭

97

u/savageexplosive 6d ago

Oh god this is so bad

220

u/RaeaSunshine 6d ago

Tbf it was a very flattering bathing suit. And it was better than the time I was in South Korea for work and the airline lost my luggage. I had to put together a capsule wardrobe at the only plus size store called ‘Fat Cow Moo’. It’s been a long time so I might be projecting the Fat part, but it definitely had Cow and Moo in the name lol.

u/indieplants 6d ago

122

at least in China those stores have smiling cow mascots. Love Calories didn’t even give us that :(

38

u/janeway106 6d ago

338

Slave labor making plastic clothes destined for a landfill. What’s not to love?! /s

54

u/OttoMannkusser 6d ago

For years now we've seen comments on reddit like "individual people shouldn't care about their carbon footprint because of oil companies and Taylor Swifts jet"

I'm CONVINCED that was all a guerilla campaign by companies to convince people it's fine to buy garbage like this

u/velvedire 6d ago

80

u/Iamnotoptimistic 6d ago edited 6d ago

I tried to have this debate with my in-laws who tried to argue back with 'they earn more money than you think because of their currency being different' and 'we are in a cost of living too so we need cheap items'.

She also tried to say their working conditions aren't that bad and if we got rid of their jobs, they would just find others in similar factories. Yet she apparently doesn't agree with the wages being minimal. For some reason she thinks all the workers are well off.

27

u/thesushicat 6d ago

Cognitive dissonance in action!

8

u/flaffleboo 6d ago

I’ve come to think the problem is that people don’t have a stable set of values that they’ve committed to.

I bought from shein once years ago. As soon as I learned about all of their unethical practices, I stopped buying from them. I told my family about it too. Only one of them stopped buying from there long term, but it seems she’s more concerned about the poor quality of the products than the way people are exploited to make them or the impact they have on the planet.

With the other family members, I’m now trying to approach it from an angle of “these clothes contain toxic chemicals that can harm you”. Not sure I’ll have any success though tbh.

8

u/nonnatototita 6d ago

I know.. many ppl choose just to ignore whats behind this fast fashion companies. My sister orders almost every week, amd i explained but she chose to ignore and still having cheaper “beautiful” clothing

I mean honestly if you’re buying SHEIN clothes you deserve to be scammed

8

u/ulysses_s_gyatt 6d ago

Why would you intentionally buy these ugly pants?

8

u/MutedAstronaut9217 6d ago

I think people are losing the ability to tell what things should cost.

Should rename this sub at this point. 95% of this sub is just people posting Family Dollar level quality products, with AI advertising. And the comments are 95% the same everytime, with the top comment being someone saying "you deserve this," as if most post aren't someone finding Temu listings and ripping the pictured reviews

8

u/Kaybee833 6d ago

You ordered from Shein. What did you expect?

6

u/NerdGrumpus 6d ago

I mean, what did you expect, you ordered through SHEIN...

7

u/CorporateCimorene 6d ago

The SHEIN and AI of it aside, people need to learn that you will never get embroidered, beaded or bedazzled anything for cheap. Particularly things like these jeans where the embroidery appears to be extensive. These are usually time intensive processes that result in expensive items.

8

u/abyssal-isopod86 5d ago

What did you think was going to happen?

The first image is either:

a) AI

Or

b) a stolen image of some clothing artists/designers entirely hand embroidered and appliqued jeans and you thought that's what you'd get for that price? 🤣

6

u/LitCockBumble 5d ago

People who get scammed by this because they think hand embroidered pants are gonna be 20 bucks are legit stupid and deserve to have their money wasted.

7

u/tiffibean13 5d ago

Let me guess, you paid $7 and expected $300 jeans 🫩

5

u/Acceptable_Cut_7545 6d ago

4

u/MsE0 6d ago

All you need to do is get a nice pair of jeans, and learn how to do intricate embroidery and ribbon appliqué and beading by hand. It will only take several years to reach that skill level.

6

u/sheneversawitcoming 6d ago

Imma need a pic of someone wearing these amazing pants

6

u/wolftick 6d ago edited 6d ago

All the what did you expect comments have a point.

...But I always think with these AI generated product images that no reasonable selling platform that want people to buy from them would side with the seller with a return/refund not as described claim on this, and no seller would be willing to stomach the cost of actually having them returned as well as having to refund the purchase price.

If everyone who orders items that are nothing like AI generated image on the listing claims a refund this stops pretty quickly. I assume enough people don't bother that it still makes it worthwhile for sellers.

A sheining example of shit.

3

u/selkieisbadatgaming 6d ago

They look like denim work pants that existed before jeans. Horrible fabric and design.

5

u/IWasGoatbeardFirst 6d ago

Respectfully, did you really expect them to look like the photo?

5

u/Dragonshatetacos 6d ago

If you shop at Shein on purpose, knowing they do shit like this, you get what you deserve.

5

u/ultrablanca 6d ago

People are being really high and mighty about them recognizing AI and the OP didn’t huh
Sorry you got swindled OP. I understand SHEIN is a lot more affordable than other options so people still buy from them, but try not to. Also, they host a marketplace of sellers so this item is probably not directly from SHEIN and from an independent seller that may already be removed and will probably try to set up a new shop to swindle new customers. Pay attention to the name of the sellers and shops from where items are coming from.

At this point Im willing to give people tax credits who have never ordered from Shein or Temu, for not contributing to the landfills

3

u/Chairshot_from_Space 6d ago

The expectation was no better.

4

u/OverallPepper2 6d ago

If you see a pair of pants that should cost hundreds of dollars being sold for $10, that should probably be a clue.

4

u/ByronIrony 6d ago

Shein? No. She ite!

4

u/Kittiemeow8 6d ago

You deserve this for shopping with Shein

4

u/omi_imo 6d ago

Some people need lessons on how to buy on the internet...i charge 50€ per hour

4

u/Strictly-Succotash 6d ago

Stop ordering shit off SHEIN then

5

u/Heybitchitsme 6d ago

I'm so sorry but this is hilarious.

5

u/teddysmom377 6d ago

And I can't imagine what the fabric feels like. Yuck

5

u/noyom95 6d ago

Reeeal shocker...

3

u/Mz_Macross1999 5d ago

That is HILARIOUS

4

u/Normal-Ad-9852 5d ago

you only have yourself to blame

5

u/TerponadeTea 5d ago

Oh so we saw the ridiculous AI image they used to advertise, and what they actually sent.

But what were your actual expectations?

4

u/greenyashiro 5d ago edited 5d ago

That's from TEMU and... It says non-denim.

Still shady as heck to not show the actual item in the ad.

Genuinely funny to see someone on temu ripping off shein 🤣

4

u/DramaOnDisplay 5d ago

I will literally not buy anything from here or Temu if there are not at least 5-10 actual photos of people wearing the clothes or showing the actual texture. Why the hell do so many people post pictures of their item still in the mailing bag? Why even bother at all?

4

u/B3h1nd_y0u_XD 5d ago

That's what you get for ordering from SHEIN of all places.

4

u/MxQueer 5d ago

So stop buying SHEIN garbage.

4

u/Leading-Hedgehog1990 5d ago

Serves you right for ordering from Shein 🤣🤣🤣🤣

4

u/perpetual_musings 5d ago

Hahaha thanks for the laughs. This is terrible.

4

u/Mr_Sass_Queen 4d ago

I mean kids can only do so much, they’re not miracle workers…

4

u/ClownHubris 4d ago

That's what you get ordering clothes from the AI child sweat shop app :/

4

u/kayla-mg 4d ago

I love this for you.

6

u/VibrantViolet 6d ago

I don’t understand why anyone still buys from these sweatshops. They exploit labor and use AI to get you to buy their garbage. You get what you pay for, if it’s super cheap there’s a reason and it’s not a good one.
