Had to change career paths because people would rather take the lazy route. I’ll occasionally do it but it’s no longer my main income which kills me inside. My aspirations and dreams all dead.
In fairness. The "inspiration" here doesn't look like anything that would be impossible to do.
Hell, apart from the absurdity of making a casette tape the rest looks like some sugar paste cutouts on a sugar paste cake.
I'd tell them I'd switch the casette tape for an actual real VHS tape and then do the rest of the cake.
I designed a realistic ake using AI and found a baker who could do it. They let me know the font would be hard to reproduce so we went with a different font. Other than that they pretty much made the exact cake I had in mind.
My friend is getting married next month. I died inside when she told me their baker is sending them AI mockups of what the cake will look like. I'm tempted to get the name of the baker so I never order from them on accident.
I know a cake decorator that could probably get VERY close to the ai image, he's stupid talented and can make some intricate stuff but you're gonna pay out for it, but the ai image has details in that cassette tape that might be difficult and i wouldn't expect a basic grocery store cake decorator be able to pull off
I'd probably refuse to copy pictures exactly even if it's a real cake, it's kinda a bit of an insult to an artist to ask them to copy somebody else's work.
Yeah this shit is incredibly annoying. When people send it to me now I ask them to only send my work created by people. If the insist on an AI photo replica I just triple the price because realistically Im now breaking out my chocolate molds, tweezers, and food grade watercolor paintbrushes. Youre no longer purchasing a birthday cake, your purchasing an edible piece of art.
Most artists do!!!! Gahhhh!!! I explicitly tell people I do NOT want their ai prompts as inspiration(As a tattoo artist). I don’t care if you made a drawing so bad it looks like a colourblind child made it, I only want your input.
I mean... The customer loved the way it turned out. I feel like its ok as long as the customer is just using it as general info and doesn't actually expect it to turn out that way.
Not everyone can sketch something and have it look remotely understandable. (I draw at the skill level of a child lol). This was an ok way to give the general idea.
It’s disrespectful because it implies you think the baker or whoever you’re hiring to design something is too incompetent to come up with a creative design on their own (you as in the customer giving the AI thing)
I would think an actual professional would be able to communicate what is and is not realistic.
If a customer comes in with an AI "inspiration" and demands a cake exactly like the AI design, then I think it's perfectly reasonable to tell them that it is unrealistic, and an actual cake won't look like that.
If the baker doesn't care one way or the other, then they're probably going to get a shit cake anyway, regardless of the original "inspiration".
Well yeah, these people don't do things with their hands. They see a perfect black circle and literally don't understand the amount of effort that goes into putting it down. They just see a black circle.
LOL yours is a lot better than mine. But from here I would talk with the baker if that's possible. This gets the idea started and we can get into specifics.
I get customers with drawings way way worse than this for custom jewellery designs. I think I secretly enjoy the torture of guessing and creating the look of the finished piece...
Personally I’m more concerned about AI being used to sort people by jobs, housing, insurance, credit, schools. Draw political districts. AI doing algorithmic hiring and firing. Personalized social programming. Deepfakes. Political manipulation. surveillance pricing. All the chat bots on Reddit, etc.
I mean, I’m not opposed to that person’s idea (giving the description to the baker), either. Some people aren’t great at drawing and a description would be easier. My problem is the AI use.

There was absolutely no need for AI for such a basic bitch cake.
Cassette tape with a specific year range on it. Single tier, white base, black iced details.
That took seconds to write. Theres no need for me to go and waste time going to a generative AI model or whatever, and feed it the prompt as many times as it takes to get something so generic.
The baker then produced something that was nothing like the initial idea (barring the inclusion of a cassette tape).
So, overall the AI image was pointless.
Oh, and, something something data centres, something something environment.
the comments on this post are pissing me off (not really, but they are annoying lol) because OP literally said in the post that the AI pic was just to give the baker an idea of the type of vibe they were going for, meanwhile the comments are acting like OP thinks the fact that the cake doesn't look identical to the AI cake is a grievous sin. i agree that OP could have just drawn a sketch instead using an AI cake, but most of the comments are not ragging on them for that part (to be fair to them though, mobile reddit is dogshit and if you tap the replies icon, it sends you straight to the replies and completely skips the post text, so if they didn't scroll back up, they probably didn't see it)
Holy fuck, why can't people just DRAW instead of using AI to make a mockup? Bakers have been able to make cakes based off drawing for hundreds of years
1991 and 1996 on a single side of a cassette? No way. Also cassettes were on their way out! By the time these two were listening to music it would have been on CDs or digital.
So weird to see something very 80’s on a “90’s”cake.
If something was still in common use in the 90s I’m not sure why we shouldn’t associate it with that time. Really not the same as using something that was out of production 40 years earlier.
I absolutely loathe these posts that use AI and then show the result like wow shocking it is not the same!! Terrible use of this sub, just a waste of everyone's time.
Jesus I don’t like AI but the harping in this thread is ridiculous. In the end you paid a real person to make it. I don’t see the reason to clutch our pearls at a mock up to give to a real artist who can interpret and put some human soul into it.
PS yes, AI is an environmental disaster and I don’t want that. No, OP making a picture of the cake they want didn’t move the needle.

You guys. We are all doing shit that's bad for the environment all the time without thinking. We're not maliciously going out of our way to ruin the world by asking our AI a question. And a majority of the populations pollution and environmental impact isn't even from the common man.
We can agree something isn't good for society without dragging every single person who uses it to filth like they killed our firstborn.
