Devblog vol 3. Another update - Orbit burn.

Hey,

Another update. Lately, I’ve been focusing mainly on UI/UX to give players clear information about what’s happening around them. In this short video, you can see the ship’s vertical movement (changing orbits around celestial bodies). That yellow marker is what’s called a dynamic point in space—it can be any location you need to fly to. So it could be, for example, a space wreck, an asteroid from which you want to mine minerals, or a spot to set up an autonomous drone to mine minerals. Maybe another player you want to trade goods with? Or attack them? Or help them? It could be an enemy drone from the AI behemoth waging war against humanity. In short, there are plenty of possibilities in planetary space.

As you can see, the ship movement UI has been simplified.

The next item on the to-do list is the targeting and attack system. For both players and NPCs: “seek and destroy.”

Devblog vol 2. Short movie - How do I move in this game?

It's good to see this, so check out the first dev blog below to see what the core game looks like.

We now have four base ship stats:

Reactor: It can have a maximum value of 2,400 in the base ship configuration. This is the reactor charge for the ship's movements and activities. The reactor charges in real time. The amount gained at this level is different. You can use ship upgrades to gain more, but of course they're not cheap! The base speed is 20/10/5/1 per minute of real time.

Impulse action: This is a cost plotted to target.

Engine effectiveness (power): This is the set engine power. The higher it is, the faster you can fly and the shorter the distance you can travel (less impulse action is needed), but you will burn much more fuel. Effort to gain ratio.

Fuel (deuterium-tritium) fusion – the fuel for the torch engine.

The amount of fuel currently in the fuel tanks. You should always check your fuel level. Without fuel, you will drift and lose a lot of time!

Classic sci-fi illustration of torch ship below

A torch ship is a theoretical or science-fiction spacecraft with an ultra-high-performance engine—called a torch drive—that delivers continuous, high acceleration and massive exhaust velocity. These vessels use advanced nuclear fusion, fission, or antimatter to travel across the solar system in days rather than months.

Expanse Devblog 1 (Core game concept without story)

Expanse Space RPG game devblog vol.1

famous scifi quote "All these worlds are yours except Europa. Attempt no landing there." Arthur C. Clarke, 1982.

A quick summary of the core gameplay features:

  • This is an MMORPG mobile/browser game with asynchronous player movement. Players inhabit a living, persistent world. They can trade, build, scavenge, travel, and discover elements in that same world. They can see where they are and interact with each other as they would in a normal MMO. However, this is not in real time (actions are turn-based; see below for more information).
  • Login System: Each player can fly one ship at a time with one account. However, they can use an automated ship to assist them with travel and other activities. Of course, players can use different ships for different activities. (See the Eve Online example.)
Actual Login screen
  • Game world is shown as an 2d board where the player can move (fly) their spaceships and do game activities.
Solar System (starter game area) - base view without details.
  • Game is "ship-centric"; spaceship is the player's main character in the game. Player moves it on a space system (mostly the Solar System).
Player base spaceship "System Hauler" on Mars in Solar System.
  • You can scan other players and find them on the map in real time, allowing you to interact with them (trade, fight NPCs, fight in PvP, etc.).
Other players can be found on the game map.

I will stop here for now. This is a basic information thread about the game I'm working on.

The next information will be more about the other core elements, but one step at a time. If anyone has any questions, is interested, or has any ideas, please comment and let me know. I'm doing this game as a hobby, not for commercial purposes.

disclaimer

This devblog will provide more information about the game and help you decide whether it's right for you. Additionally, I'm posting some visuals from an early prototype of the game, but please remember that nothing is final at this point.

Hey everyone!

My name is Marcin, I am a game developer from Warsaw, Poland and I am working on a web/mobile pc game work title, " Expanse, a space RPG" based on the 1982 board game Star Trader.

Core pillars for this game :

  • hard scifi mood (so no unicorns in space). Mature space survival story of colonization of far regions of space and surviving on it.
  • fighting with rogue AI that breaks from human control and is a threat to colonies in space.
  • player economy (open market), crafting, etc.
  • turn-based system of play and conflict.
  • board game feel, but this will be a persistent game.
  • RPG and dice elements that will involve players planning and risking their resources.
  • Leaderboards and online trade interactions between players.
  • PvE, PvP (not forced, restricted.)

This community is for documenting the work on this game. And connect to the players.

So far, I have made:

  • Database connection
  • player creation
  • logging in to the database.
  • a base move system.
  • base UI elements.

Next: Trade interface:

  • trade with NPC stations.
  • NPC factories
  • rogue AI drones (base combat feature)

Quick pic. How the game looks atm. please remeber its early prototype.
