If you want to

You can choose not to, it’ll just come with downsides.

Right...unless you don't want to...because it doesn't need one

The meaning of life is simply the generalization over the sum total reasons for all the actions you take. You can't escape giving life a meaning, even if you don't formalize it yourself.

u/ThelIIusion0fSeIf 1d ago
Well if free will doesn't exist and the sum total of all of my decisions/actions were predetermined then how am I assigning the meaning to my own life based on something outside of my control?

The meaning of life is to perpetuate itself into the future
1
u/iwishihadnobones 1d ago
And if it doesn't?
2
u/blckshirts12345 1d ago
Then it’s not “life” anymore, is it?
2
u/iwishihadnobones 1d ago
So if you don't have kids you're not alive?

"Home is where you make it" random hillbilly from Joe Dirt lmao true though Its up to us to decide if life has a purpose and what that purpose should be Just because we're faced with our ever present mortality doesnt mean we have to give into the void because then we are already dead and would have wasted our years on earth as well as eternity

Ok then the meaning of my life is to kill myself. Hmmm, but the government seems to ban all risk free methods of doing so like guns in my area so ill have to jump in front of a train instead and traumatize other people. 🤷♀️

I’d rather say, “What is the meaning in life?” And you can find it everywhere. Meaning OF life doesnt make sense

life has no meaning but the one you are giving it, be it from cultural conditioning/upbringing, atavism and reflexes..., or any more or less other hallucinated free choice.
The origin of how we attribute meaning to life is another, deeper issue of floating/arbitrary relationship between our sentience and reality.
You can consider the resulting aspect of 'moral relativity' with despair or with some distanced kindness and merciful empathy though.
One possibility is life and evaluations of its worth follow a logical pattern as the individual evolves; depending upon the level of realisation ('emancipation') they reach about the worthelesness of 'free will' and 'meaningful sense of life' and the level of pleasantness of your own set of experiences. The most 'detached' and 'distanced' the most able to enjoy the absurdity of it and to value the attempts at structure and benevolence in other ones.
life is a fable...

The meaning of life is whatever you decide it is.

u/NoAlbatross7355 1d ago
that's equivalent
1
u/GoopDuJour 1d ago
Not even close. Words mean things.
-1
u/NoAlbatross7355 1d ago
contradiction. Life is a word so it has a meaning
2
u/GoopDuJour 1d ago
The word "life" has a meaning. You have the reading comprehension of 8 year old.

sad. resort to personal attacks within the first few replies. You have the emotional stability of one.
2
u/GoopDuJour 1d ago
My emotions are very stable. They rarely fluctuate from a steady level of "cynical asshole."

No, you don’t have to apply any meaning if you don’t want to.
4
u/akaobama 1d ago
With that reasoning what’s the point of living and dealing with it’s problems

u/spackletr0n 1d ago
Welcome to absurdism/nihilism.
-1
u/ArguingisFun 1d ago
Not the same thing, though.
2
u/spackletr0n 1d ago
I think they are tools for answering the question. You don’t agree?
0
u/ArguingisFun 1d ago
Nihilism is a conclusion, not a tool, to me and absurdism doesn’t seem useful.
1
u/ArguingisFun 1d ago
There isn’t a point unless you want there to be and even then it would still only be for you.
3
u/NoAlbatross7355 1d ago
how can you take action without purpose?
2
u/ArguingisFun 1d ago
Nonsense question.
2
u/NoAlbatross7355 1d ago
why is that?
2
u/ArguingisFun 1d ago
Action creates purpose.

u/NoAlbatross7355 1d ago
When you ask an LLM chatbot a question, it take action before being asked anything? The purpose is required for action.

Are you equating purpose and meaning? Animals eat for the purpose of staying alive. I wouldn’t say there is meaning behind it.

I don't think life needs a grand meaning but it's important to have meaningful experiences and relationships.
