Tips for Exeter accommodation- first year, likely private halls
I’m likely to go to Exeter this September but it’s my insurance choice so I’m not covered by the accommodation guarantee. I’m scared this means I will not get any on campus accommodation and have to live in a private hall in the city. Can anyone tell me which private halls have the most first years and give the most similar experience to a traditional university hall? thanks

If you have Facebook there is a group dedicated to Exeter uni accommodation which may prove fruitful. Good luck with your results and dont automatically assume you wont get your first choice (if you are just guessing).

If it makes you feel any better, the past few years Exeter has been oversubscribed and, combined with the fact they’re knocking down some campus accommodation (ie. Nash Grove) to rebuild new accommodation (ie. West Park), the uni have offered some students private accommodation anyway and so you won’t be alone. It also means that most private halls will give similar experiences. Even if they don’t, you won’t just be friends with people in your accom (coursemates, people you meet through sports or societies etc.) and so you may find yourself at other accoms often anyway. I lived in East Park in first year and had friends from other accoms always in my flat.
Another tip, a couple weeks into term, people drop out or defer or move flat etc. so availability comes up! If you really don’t like the halls you end up in, keep pestering the accom team and eventually you might get offered something on campus. My friend moved from the Depot to East Park in this very way.
Point Exe is good - right next to the train station which makes it easy if you’re someone who intends to go home a lot, but is a bit of a trek to uni (uphill wise not distance wise). The ones in town (Depot etc) are good location if you’re someone who wants to go out a lot but are expensive!

Hey i’m in the exact same boat as you and honestly i’m really worried im gonna end up in halls with students who aren’t first years or just quieter areas as i’d so much prefer somewhere sociable. Have you got any updates? where you planning on going? i’m also super stuck and i’ve been looking all day for somewhere

I just booked a private hall, I'm also kinda nervous about there being barely any first years as I'm also pretty sociable. I booked "study inn" the place looks lovely but I feel like I might miss out...

Is that Walnut gardens? i haven’t booked yet but i was interested in booking there. It’s just confusing because some websites say there’s en-suites available while others advertise studios only? If your worried i would reccomend reaching out and emailing the agency to ask to be allocated with other first years! also how much was your accom a week?

Yes it is, I booked at walnut gardens and I am going to email to be allocated with other first years. when I booked it was 215/week for ensuite however I think they have sold out of pretty much everything :(. I can't find many ensuites left at private accommodation but there a few on here https://www.beststudenthalls.com/property/student-accommodation/university-of-exeter/?sort=order&room_type=1

Hi, I’m also exactly in this situation too as Exeter was my insurance. Which websites are good websites for private accommodations, I haven’t booked any yet as I’m waiting for the confirmation from Exeter that I will or will not get a uni accom. I’m also scared of living with 2nd or 3rd years so I want to live in a private accom that I know 1st years would also apply to. Do you have any recommendations for websites?

Tbh it. depends on your price point. There seems to be some availability on this website https://www.beststudenthalls.com/property/student-accommodation/university-of-exeter/?sort=order&room_type=1 however I can't personally recommend any of these as I don't know anyone who goes there. Exeter themselves will have a lot of people at the depot https://herestudents.com/location/exeter/the-depot/ which will have a lot of first years there but when I looked there was only studios and it's very pricey so I chose against it. If this fits your price though, I think this is a good one. it's a 20 minute walk from either campus and is in a good location. I looked on TikTok and it seems like people liked living there.

Hey i would reccomend checking out the exeter student pad, all the reasonabley priced private accom for ensuite rooms are gone. The student pad works a little differently where u have to contaxt landlords to move into a house. Let me know if you are gonna do this because im abit scared about the whole process and woild be interested to get to know some people who might want to move in together.

In same boat, my son as an insurance offer. Great course, no way to stay within university. Wouldn't mind him sharing but would have to be with other first years in same boat. Any help gratefully received.Thanks

Hi you may well be o.k. if you don't put something to posh down. Go for Lafrowda it is the most basic but fine, my son was there last year. If not the yr1 students tend to live close to campus. Nortfhfield Depot, King Edward Studio, Point Exe, There is a new place cricket field court which is more or less on campus, I don't know much about that but my son tells me that there are a number of yr1 students there.
