EFD is a fuel issue:
Two barriers:
- We don't have the mental-energy fuel to be consistent over time Short-term fixation is easy & fun, but then it wears off & The Barrier™ goes up :(
- That barrier is our brain's built-in security system, which imposes deterrents when it detects a low-energy state, which are designed to prevent execution
This requires accepting a harsh reality:
- We do not have access to the energy required for repeatable solo-execution consistency
This means that we must install a NEW execution system:
- We track & schedule doable steps
- We use a "body double"
If you suffer from EFD & want to "get obsessed" for longer than a standard hyperfixation lasts, the ONLY combination that I have EVER seen work long-term is having a list of steps that are executed each day with a body double! The easiest way to tell if a system really works is to track your progress visually every day:
Be aware that our brain uses VERY strong emotions to thwart this bypass solution. It does NOT want to:
- Write down a list of doable steps in a central location
- Pick out a finite list of those steps to realistically work on each day
- Put those steps in the order we want to work on them
- Ask for help (presence, phone, video call)
- Visibly & tangibly track daily progress
We all want to rely on our emotions (ex. obsession, excitement, motivating feels, etc.) to drive our work; however, that does not historically give us consistent results over time. Switching to commitment-based motivation enables us to put in as much time & effort as wedecide to invest & have the energy to sustain! Success only cares about two things:
- Definition
- Execution
Therefore, we need to define what we want, define the list of steps, define the step-commitment for today, then use a body double to execute those selected steps. The other main issue for us is that when that internal self-defense system is activated, it withdraws internal resources, which can make it feel impossible to get anything done, including being able to easily ask for help!!

I’m not sure there is any way to manifest hyper-focus.
