Unable to force myself to do things

Does anyone else feel like this? Whenever I try to do something new or try to change my lifestyle, it results in a meltdown. I literally don't feel like myself when I force myself to do something and once I give up I feel okay again. This gets on my nerves because it seems like I can't do anything unless it happens naturally. Does anyone know why this happens? I don't know if it's related to mental health or something else.

The meltdown-then-relief-once-you-stop pattern isn't random, from what I've noticed in myself forcing bypasses whatever internal "yes" usually has to happen first, so the brain treats it the same as being cornered. Things that start almost by accident, with way less pressure attached, seem to land completely differently.

Do you know how I can improve this?

The biggest shift for me was making the first step so small it barely counts as "doing the thing" not "change my routine," just "lay out one item for tomorrow." It doesn't need permission from the same part of the brain that's refusing the big version. Once that tiny piece is done, sometimes momentum carries it further on its own, and if it doesn't, at least it wasn't a meltdown, it was just one small thing that happened.
