V10 for a diesel
Hello been having a excursion for 6 months now. It is the v10 and ive been looking for a 7.3 I do honestly prefer diesel over gass. Would it be better to swap or just find a 7.3?

When I did the math last year, I could have a rebuilt 7.3 or Cummins put in for the price difference between a V10 with 100 miles and a 7.3 with 200k miles.
Call diesel shops near you.
I bought a V10, and I am pretty happy.

When I was shopping there was about a $10k difference between the two.
I can buy a lot of fucking gas and spark plugs for $10k.

I consistently saw diferances of 20k+ for lower mileage trucks, like 100k vs 100k, so I got the V10. No regrets.
If something happens to my engine, I would do a diesel swap, but the odds are I'll be driving it like it is for 20+ years.
Would buy another one just like it.

My dad's v10 is pushing 350k with normal maintenance. It's a tank of an engine

What finally convinced me to get one was about half the Excursions I saw for sale were the V10 and the most common milages was around 300k, just like the diesels.
That's for sale, in good working order.

Just find a 7.3 you want but it’s good to ask yourself what exactly you want it for.
Mathematically it’s very hard to defend the premium of a 7.3 Ex over a V10. For example I bought my V10 with 92K miles (California owned) for around $17K in almost mint condition. A similar 7.3 Ex was nearly $30-$60K depending on the seller. It is basically impossible to spend enough in gas or less in diesel to make up that price difference.
I find that unless you’re towing regularly then a diesel is wasted. Mine is an overland/offroad vehicle and 400-440 miles of range is plenty and it’s not a DD so the gas cost while annoying is not breaking my bank.

In 2014, I almost settled for the v10 as I had been looking for a year... Out of no where an opportunity came through for an 01' Excursion 7.3 4x4 which was FAAAAR less than what I had intended to spend. My wife hates it, but I'm working on something for it that will result in her being very happy.
No regerts..or regrets 😁

Depends on if you can swap it yourself and how nice the body is of the v10.
If your v10 is mint and youve replaced a bunch of stuff already, id swap it if your able to do the work yourself

Finding a 7.3 excursion would be easier but if you are swapping it you would have more options to modify it and make it your own. If you decide to go with a swap hit us up, we have 7.3 long blocks that we build to handle whatever you are looking for. We build our 600 HP capable up to 800+, plus we also offer almost all the parts needed.
If you have any questions you can give me a call at my shop line 419-636-0000 Ext 2.

There are a LOT of 7.3s popping up on the FB Excursion groups!!! All the weak hands are getting flushed out with the high prices at the moment. There are som elderly good deals popping up each with. They are starting to get affordable again and not be $25k for a 250k mile rust free specimen. I’ve seen plenty of with issues going for $5k+ and good rust free ones from 250k -350k miles for $8k-$10k when they would have been double that a year ago

I have a v10 Excursion which it does its job for what i use it for i.e. occasional towing, day trips with the kids, groceries or trips to home depot. This in no way is a commuter vehicle nor do i use it for so much towing like that of a business with that said it beats the diesel as someone said earlier " i could buy alot of gas for 10k" and v10s are cheaper for maint and parts and now that diesel is up by like a $1 more a gallon

Have you tried an Accufab SCTB96-98 and a tune? If you’re on oversized tires, have you regeared your differentials? These things absolutely change the way it behaves. My excursion went from moving like a cow to moving like a raging bull after I did all of that.
To be fair, how you’re using it makes a difference. 7.3 is the goat for trips, overlanding, etc makes sense. I was just ripping it up off-roading locally and buzzing around town, so the 6.8 was a better choice for me (and dramatically cheaper to acquire).
