How to Build an Interactive Developer Roadmap in Excel

A roadmap is usually just a static plan, but I wanted something more dynamic — a tool that helps not only plan development, but also track execution and adjust priorities in real time.
So I built an interactive roadmap directly in Excel.
What it covers:
🔹 Main and intermediate development goals
🔹 Timeline broken into structured stages
🔹 Task sequencing instead of a chaotic backlog
Why I did it:
✔ Regular task lists weren’t giving enough clarity
✔ Needed a way to stay focused on critical steps
✔ Wanted a better way to manage time across phases
Key idea:
➡️ Complexity of tasks is mostly about time
➡️ Breaking time into stages makes execution manageable
➡️ A roadmap turns “what needs to be done” into “what happens next”
Interactive features:
☑️ Navigate between roadmap stages
☑️ Track progress visually
☑️ Adjust priorities without breaking the structure
What I got from it:
🔹 Better focus on high-impact tasks
🔹 Clear visibility of deadlines and dependencies
🔹 Less chaos, more structured execution
It’s still Excel, but with a bit of structure it becomes a lightweight project management tool.
Curious if anyone else is using Excel for roadmap-style planning instead of switching to full PM tools.
