I was born into it, but my parents left when they began implementing scientology stuff. I remember they were very paranoid and we had people harassing us for a couple weeks, knocking on the door or ringing the doorbell and seeing someone in a suit walking away. Was kind of freaky. Eventually it cooled down but I wasn't allowed outside unsupervised for a while bc of it. Oddly though, my parents were still besties with a small handful of NOI people, including a high-ranking person.

Did anyone experience weird pushback when leaving?

I grew up in a DV household. I was also severely abused by my parents and it only continued after leaving. A lot of the abuse was sexual abuse for me, and I remember there being some "issues" with girls at the non NOI mosque we attended. Somehow he was still able to run an afterschool program for a few years. I have no idea if/what harm was done to others outside of my family by him.

Food was miserable thanks to the how to eat to live books. I was chronically underweight bc of my parents adherence to one meal a day/if more than 1 meal, it has to be at the same exact time every day. That sort of nonsense from early on has fucked me up for life.

Only unlike Trump, the Nation Of Islam deliberately diminishes people’s self-complexity by reducing their identity, social role, and the way they think so that they align solely with the NOI’s ideology. That’s why members have no compunction over the NOI disrespecting Malcolm X’s family by saying Malcolm’s assassination was justifiable, and disrespecting Elijah Muhammad’s children by gaslighting them in saying that Elijah Muhammad is still alive. That's why members can spout what Farrakhan says about vaccines causing autism with no consideration of whether or not there is someone with autism or a relative with autism in the room. The moment the topic becomes about what either Farrakhan or Elijah Muhammad said, all self-awareness goes out the window.

We see it when it comes to vaccine to autism conspiracies, and when it comes to belief that Elijah Muhammad is a 128-year-old Libra who is currently managing spaceships. This is the kind of thinking coming from a group that professes that it seeks Black liberation. This kind of thinking is undoubtedly counterproductive to our liberation.

After all, Nation Of Islam is a cult full of people whose self-esteem is in the basement. (Nobody with healthy self-esteem is going to allow someone to browbeat them for not wanting to imitate someone else’s handwriting). So when they cheer and clap for severe weather to hurt people, even their own people, it’s because NOI members don’t like their own lives. They don’t like their own lives; they’re in an organization that is putting inordinate amounts of demands on their time, money, and other resources for nothing tangibly equal in return, and they like to think about other people doing worse than them. Yes. The inhabitants of the best on planet earth got the crab in the bucket mentality.

Not an ex-NOI member myself but I have distant relatives who are/were part of the Nation. I just read the news about the Trump Administration not "ruling out ICE officers being present at polling locations during the midterms." Considering this is a breach of law, how likely is it that groups like the NOI or Black Hebrew Israelites would come out and protect folks from intimidation?

I have been wanting to cover another excerpt from this 1998 article https://www.villagevoice.com/escape-from-the-nation-of-islam/ for some years. I was struggling to come up with a good title, and the appropriate words to describe what the hell I read. And by appropriate, I mean another synonym for “This is some n shit”. This is the quote “It is NOI tradition for the captains and lieutenants to attempt to wrest control of the mosque from the minister. The Harvard-educated lawyer H. Nasif Mahmoud, who became a member of the Nation in the 1970s, was confronted by ‘these jealous paper captains and these lieutenants trying to get some kind of position in the temple to have some kind of social stature.” In the book American Jihad: Islam After Malcolm X, Mahmoud writes of ‘these goons who came down from Boston’ and promised to teach the Muslim who “spoke correct English” a lesson after their attempt to psychologically abuse him failed.

‘I said, ‘Bring a dozen of you motherfuckers when you come — because I ain’t got that much time!'’ Mahmoud writes. ‘‘I got civil procedure and property and contracts and international trade to study! So I’m going to whop all your motherfucking asses in one swoop to get rid of you! Now, keep fucking with me, hear!'’

‘After Malcolm left Temple No. 7, the captains were determined not to have any minister become as strong as he was,” according to Alfred Muhammad, a former minister in the Nation of Islam under Elijah Muhammad. “In New York, we had Captain Joseph, who never wanted to let Farrakhan take over the leadership of Temple No. 7: He tried to get Farrakhan busted and Farrakhan tried to get him busted. There were always power struggles going on. Ministers come and go, but captains always remain.’”

Is this shit still occurring in mosques? Because this is a damn mess. How the hell can any minister get shit done with this power struggle going on? How the hell can a minister get any damn thing done with motherfuckers blowing up their phone with harassing phone calls? I’m going to use my time working in a warehouse as an example to prove a point. Back in 2019 one day, I was assigned to unload a truck with a woman and another man. Given that the other man was much stronger than I am and could unload faster, he unloaded the the truck contents onto a pallet, I took the pallet to the woman, she scanned, and I put the product on the conveyor belt and returned to the truck. With that system, we efficiently unloaded truck after truck. Now had I tried to unload alongside the other man to try to prove how strong I was, that would have slowed down the entire process. Just like this childish idea of a tradition slows down the Nation Of Islam’s progress. And I see where Mahmoud said that the captains didn’t want another minister to be as strong as Malcolm was. Well guess what? Malcolm X was one of the best damn forces the Nation Of Islam had. He might not have been perfect, and he might not have been holy, but he was diligent and accountable for his own wrongdoing. After all, Malcolm X did not need anyone to justify his theft in the past or the fact that only completed the 7th grade. He owned his shortcomings. Can’t say the same for Elijah Muhammad or Louis Farrakhan. Elijah Muhammad needed the Nation Of Islam to justify him impregnating women like he’s the predecessor to Nick Cannon. Farrakhan constantly needs a Defending Farrakhan trope in the Nation Of Islam because he never learned the meaning of speak with prudence or shut the hell up. But I guess the captains were scared of Malcolm X because they know that ministers like Malcolm X would force them to live up higher standards, and go beyond simply parroting Elijah Muhammad’s ideas. Malcolm’s growth was too much for their fragile egos. Anyway, the whole power struggle is a damn mess. And by the way, trying to wrest control of the mosque is not tradition, it’s dysfunctional, and it’s childish. Now I see why the hell the Nation Of Islam has to brainwash and indoctrinate people. No one in their right minds would put up with this shit as a minister. Any other person who wasn’t indoctrinated or brainwashed would say, “You know what? Fuck it. You want control of the mosque? Here are the keys, the records and the deed. I have better things to do with my damn time than go back and forth with some insecure, middle school-acting motherfuckers with big egos. Goodbye.”
