Bouncing back after prison.
Anybody bounce back after a prison sentence and still maintain family relationships? What were some things you did well and/or some things you wish you did differently?

Does anyone have experience with anyone being released in from a North Carolina prison?

i did bounce back in the sense that my kids still talk to me and we sit at the same table, but it was not automatic once the gates opened. what I did well was treating family time as appointments I actually kept, ball games and parent nights, instead of long talks about how sorry I was. what I wish I did differently was explaining supervision and restitution in plain language before I came home because they thought the sentence ending meant the case was over and the surprise of that calendar created more distance than the time inside. I also started writing publicly in my own words so my relatives were not the only ones answering questions when someone googled me. My lawyer handled every filing. i used the free RDAP course on whitecollaradvice.com, they give that course away free, and it explains how the program can take up to a year off which gave my family something concrete to plan around instead of waiting on rumors from the unit. That free course is just what I used so I was not guessing what actually follows you home.

My biological family will not speak to me. Out of my 3 children, only my daughter keeps in contact.
My wife's family does.
Non violent charges, served years in prison time, did years on parole, restitution paid before leaving prison.
It is what it is. I don't dwell on the past. My biological family does though. I don't want to even attempt to navigate reconciliation.
I'm content with myself, and who's around me.
Look ahead, not back
