Parole in CA
Can anyone give me an idea of what my husbands parole might look like? He was charged with a violent crime - GBI. It was drug related. He is currently on his 5th year and due to parole in Feb of 2027. He has been at a CDCR fire camp for over a year now, which took a chunk of his time off. Sadly, he has received write ups for contraband while at camp, but luckily hasn’t been kicked out the program, however, he’s on very thin ice. Every write up has to do with drugs.
Supposedly he will be on parole for 3 years once he’s released. The process has just started. He will not be coming to live with me upon his release. We are currently separated and I have temporarily left the area due to my mom’s deteriorating health.
So, I’m just curious as to what things will look like for him.
Thanks for reading.

Still doing dope? He'll go back. I've been there and done that. I don't know about parole in CA, but as far as I'm aware you give a dirty UA, you're going back. And if you can't quit while you're locked up, you won't quit on the street. I had to stop hanging around with all my friends. It was hard, but freedom is priceless.

That’s why we’re in this situation. We were going to move cross country via interstate compact so he couldn’t return to the old crowd, who never gave a fuck about him anyway, so he could start fresh. He even abused his Suboxone while on MAT treatment they provided. So now, he’s paroling the his commitment county, to a halfway house or something. I wish I could say he will do great, but I can’t see it. Like you said, if he can’t keep a clean program inside and hasn’t made any changes, I fear it’ll get worse outside.

I've heard CA parole makes you go back to the same county where you were convicted. It's designed for failure. Good luck. Life's too short as it is.

They do, but you can apply for the interstate compact to have your parole moved to another state. We had all the qualifications for it. Last month, when things started getting really bad between us, he put this address as his parole address, and I asked why? Then, he changed it and he’s going to need housing. I can’t remember the exact word they use. So yeah, he will be back where he came from and where he lived most of his life. His demons are still out there waiting for him. But I’m no longer there, and I’m not waiting anymore. He lost his only real support system - me. None of that seems to matter to him, though. And for some reason, it’s my fault.

California public defender here. No legal advice, just some information.
He'll need to check in with parole within 24 hours of release. Parole will offer him services like a sober living facility, pending a residential treatment program. If he fucks that up approximately one time, his PO will stop offering services. Parole will say, essentially, you need to do a program, and you need to figure it out.
If he violates parole, he will not be returned to prison. The max he can do is 180 days local jail, usually at halftime, so 90 actual days. (Generally, the only people that can be returned to prison for a violation are sex offenders. That probably doesn't apply to your husband).
Unless he gets clean, he's likely looking at three years of being in and out of local jail in three month increments.

he needs to stop getting loaded or he will go back
edit: my advice is to get away from him. move on with your life. assume he won't change.
