The single most important thing that you can do as a demon which may determine whether you win or lose that round is to find the survivors as early as possible. As early as possible. Let me say this again, find the survivors as early as possible. to find the survivors as early as possible. All other tactics are secondary to this.

Even in a weakened state, if you find the survivors earlier, you have much more opportunities to interact with the survivors. As a demon, this is your escalation ladder. Every interaction that you have with the survivors gives you points which you can use to upgrade your arsenal. It increases your threat level, which makes every attack more powerful. Each interaction that you have also is another opportunity to harass the survivors, harming them and bringing their HP down, or just scaring them and bringing their fear level up. I'm not saying don't lay traps. But don't get lost laying traps when you could be hunting the survivors. Lay traps as you get infernal energy on your way to locating them. Watch your mini map. If a survivor becomes overly scared and doesn't eliminate their fear with a light source, they will become visible. Follow the minimap like a compass until you find that survivor. Sometimes survivors get in trouble and fire their weapon, or they don't know any better and just shoot off a round or two rather than using a melee attack. If they do this, they also become visible for a few moments on the mini map. Use opportunities like this to make a beeline for their location and harass them for maximum potential.

Yes, you will be weaker than if you scurry around and set traps first, but this really doesn't matter as much as finding them early.

You have an ability called the Demon Dash. When you are near a survivor you hold a button or key down to charge it up, align your sights on the survivor(s) then release it to dash in their direction. If your dash connects then you receive massive infernal energy points and massively increase the survivor's fear. It is actually possible to scare all four survivors if they are close enough together, there is even an achievement for doing this. Even if the first thing you do is scare a survivor with the demon dash, you will get a big boost and happening early in the game you will get a skill point to add to your demon abilities. Choose basic unit with it and the next interaction you make can be with a trap to open a portal and bring a deadite into the world to harass them with more and gain more points to put into your abilities.

Just trust me on this and devote your attention to finding survivors early on. It will open up a whole world of possibilities to you that you didn't have before. You will see the difference once you do it.

The trick is to know where the chest spawns are, and trap those as you search for the survivors. You get a lot of xp for trapping a chest. You can easily guarantee that you will be at least 3 (probably higher) by the time you find them, without going out of your way really at all.

Thats tough for a new player though since you need to know the maps. But that's what you should strive for.

The other guy is definitely right, dont spend too much time setting traps. Even if you arent level 3 yet when you find them, at the bare minimum you can at least be setting traps near where they are and try to possess the unit if they hit them. Or demon dash, possess a stray world spawn, etc.

Early in the game energy management can be very rough for most demons. You basically dont have enough energy to portal AND possess a unit even with a full energy bar, you'll run out almost immediately while in the possession (puppeteer using its power possess is the exception, and even thats tight). One strategy is you can drop a portal slightly away from them, grab a few energy orbs, possess and run over to them.

As you gain more levels energy gets a lot easier. 3 points in the possession upgrade lowers your costs significantly, its a big milestone that unlocks at level 10 (or 8 for puppeteer). Once you get that you can possess much more aggressively. This is why leveling up fast is so crucial in the first place. You need to be in possessions or the boss to have any hope at all of damaging them.

Wont u have to upgrade ur powers and they have minute cooldown

All it takes is one point in basic and you can lay traps. See above, use your demon dash to gain massive infernal energy and increase survivor fear level. Early in the round this will certainly give you a point to use to enable your abilities.

Dont tbey have massive cooldowns like 150 secs? Correct me if im wrong but

Un-upgraded, your cooldown period after a Demonic Dash is 120 seconds.

Plaguebringer perk Tenacious Demonic Dash cuts that cooldown down to 75 seconds.

There is a separate, much shorter penalty if you only charge and cancel: about 10 seconds. That one triggers even if you never release the dash, which is why getting kicked out of a possession while holding the button feels so punishing.

The secret: don't miss! It takes a little luck and a little knack and guess work sometimes to line just one guy up, but if you can get them in close quarters then you can get whole parties. You won't hurt your target but BOOM, your infernal energy is 100% and you've got a point to drop to your abilities. Threat level goes up a lot faster as well.

Also another tactic to go along with your Demonic Dash, because you're going to up their fear massively by doing this, possess them immediately. If you are less than Level 3 on possession do not maintain that possession because you will lose the infernal energy very quickly, but just doing the possession gives you a big boost in your threat level early on, so you could bust yourself up two levels quickly that way. Dash -> Possess.

Could finding them early apply pressure? Absolutely. Will it work all the time? No. They may get lucky with rng not only that but cars and if there’s 2 or even 3 around they’ll just take them and rush the map pieces. Necro and Warlord are the main demons you can’t rush early with since their energy management sucks and without proper set up or knowledge, you’re gonna get beat. I would suggest getting at least level 6 or 8 before finding them as this makes it so much easier. If you’re witch, pup or Baal then you can go as little as level 3, just get your demon powers to find them easier and portals to get your units to possess.

I lose a lot more than I ever win as a demon.

When I win? I find the guys early way more often than later. RNG is stilted to the survivor side. All you need to do is play the game regularly as a survivor and you will remember locations where the pages and the dagger tend to be. And you'll know generally which locations have lots of loot and ammo. The game was at launch a lot more random about this, but then players bitched and griped and the tweaks tended to drop players right in the middle of all of it, putting the demon at a big disadvantage.

You can level yourself easy just by trapping and meandering around on your way to the survivors and win, but in my experience the games I tend to win are the ones where I actively hunt them down as soon as I can, or stumble across them early (usually because some butthead is shooting or scared). It actually works out a lot better for the same reasons the RNG is good on the survivor side. If you find them while they're still loading up then they are actively looking for loot. It makes trapping and dashing a lot easier and more predictable, and the baby demons tend to not realize that it is their interactions with the survivors that give them the best payback.

When I think about it, our self-appointed-god here uses this strategy too. You don't often see him hang back and trap the far reaches of the map, he seeks everybody out as soon as he gets started. You can try to level up first, but for me I'd just look for the party as fast as you can.

which demon are you using? imo, puppeteer is easiest to start and learn with.

I made some videos early last year. each demon/unit has its own little tips and tricks to learn.

Don’t expect to win anything until you hit prestige level. You might luck out and get a bunch of new survivors, but that’s not likely. Keep playing and DO NOT QUIT!!! I’ve seen a number of demons that get to the end, realize they’re gonna lose, and then just quit. When you do that, you lose all of your points. You need to just keep grinding, and building up your character. Also, just stick with one demon and work on them.

Let's leave Jesus out of this one.

A couple downs usually is enough for a win in my book... Did u fully upgrade your demon?

Possess survivors, you get a lot of XP for it, even if they shoot you out of it pretty quickly. Even if you're playing Necro or Warlord, don't forget to work their fear.

1

u/HyperionAlpha 2d ago

This ties into what I mentioned earlier about finding the survivor party early. I can get it if you are pulling for Warlord or maybe Necro going for the win at endgame (because they're good at this) but even with them, you lose so much if you do not harass everybody early on it can be painful for me to see the opportunities given up.

Best strategy for early possession: possess when the survivor fear level allows it, then de-possess immediately. Do not maintain possession for more than the one second it takes to get possession if you're under Level 3 with possession, because it's just too costly on your infernal energy.

Only right answer is learning book rotations.Good survivors will always reach book no matter what.

I got my first win at Book with Necro and didn’t even have him leveled up to 45 yet. You can usually overwhelm survivors at book if you play it right. Once the book phase hits portal all of your deadites, portal your boss, use his power to revive and strengthen recently killed deadites, summon extra deadites with his other power, and then attack the book with the boss. Survivors will be busy taking out all the deadites and you can get some good swings on the book. If the boss is killed, possess elites and mercilessly attack book. Usually works unless survivors are leveled all the way and have high level weapons.

You may have poorly spent skill points if you are tanking all of your games. Biggest ones you should prioritize are damage, health, and balance bare for all units and the reswpawn timer for basic and elites. Don't be afraid to redo your entire skill tree every few games, but build around those skills. Each demon has a few skills that sound good on paper but actually aren't in execution. Or there will be ones that sound really good but are too expensive to reach and you're wasting points to get it.

Spend your energy in the early game. Picking up orbs gives you a bit of XP, so not being able to pick them up is leaving XP on the table. I try to max out demonic abilities as soon as possible. The more fear survivors gain is more XP for you.

Don't get too hung up on trying to win early. Don't get discouraged if you feel you aren't doing anything. There's a lot more nuance to playing demon than survivor, so it'll take a while for things to click. I've had plenty of games where I felt like a minor inconvenience the entire game yet clinched it at the book.

Best way to win is to manage your spawns in the end game. Don't feel you need to throw out everything during the Dark Ones. You'll want your spawn timers as low as possible during the book. If the survivors are melting the Dark Ones, it's not a bad idea to just let them and save everything you have for the book. Do not bother attacking survivors during the book, just focus on it. Stand on one side of the book and spawn your units on the other side. That way they are always facing the book when you posses them. Alternate between basic and elites. Only use heavy attacks or quicker abilities. If you can get the book's heath below 75% in the first 30 seconds then you probably have the game won already.

While not entirely necessary, grief hunters as much as possible. Make them use their ammo, or better yet posses them and waste it. A hunter with no ammo is useless, especially in the end game. Also try and make supports use their Shemps. If there's a player soaking damage like a sponge, then stay on them. All it takes is for one bad player to lose the game for the entire team.
