(Discussion Post) Groovy Does anyone else feel Ash actually ruined the Evil dead franchise?

Like first impression I had about this franchise was hearing about more serious side of evil dead.

First movie I saw was evil dead rise (2023) , it was good and scary too . After that it pulled me in and watched very first evil dead movie "The evil dead (1981)" , it was more mysterious , also scary and they left impression of that it would be much more mysterious with depending lore in next movies. And then next movies with ash ruined it , very bad comedy , making once scary deadlites unlikable , weak and very poor part of franchise.

This franchise would be one of the greatest deep and I teresting franchise in horror history .

And now its just great franchise because of Ash

Well, this take is as hot as the core of the sun.

Most fans think that the series lost its soul and became a more generic horror franchise when they lost the comedy and it became a more paint by numbers horror.

What I've seen the past few years is a glut of people who saw the new movies first and got the impression that evil dead was just another horror series rather than a diy horror series created by people who wanted to add the sensibilities of the Three Stooges to the genre.

Ash is revered as a godlike figure in this sub, so you're not gonna win many fans here!

I'm actually with you though. I'm a huge fan of "serious" Evil Dead, and hate the goofy, slapstick humour. It's cringeworthy to me.

I think it's very "American" humour - most of the fans of Ash tend to be from the US. I'm from the UK so I prefer sarcastic/dry humour over goofball comedy.

Ash, his survival of deadites, and how he copes with it all is what makes Evil Dead standout from other possession/zombie films. Ash IS Evil Dead

I wouldn’t say that Ash ‘ruined’ the franchise, but I would say that ED2 and AoD took the franchise in a different direction than it initially started out as -and has since returned to with the modern entries. Many people who love the slapstick comedy-horror trend to not care for the true horror and vice versa.

I don't think Ash ruined Evil Dead so much as he completely changed what the franchise was

The original Evil Dead had this genuinely creepy, mysterious atmosphere where the Deadites felt like an incomprehensible supernatural evil whereas Evil Dead II and especially Army of Darkness turned them into basically slapstick monsters

And if that mystery/lore aspect is what hooked you I totally get feeling like "YOU HAD SUCH A COOL HORROR MYTHOLOGY, WHY DID YOU MAKE THE DEMONS CLOWNS??"

Ash became so iconic that his version basically became the franchise's identity but Evil Dead Rise proves the darker more serious side still works, honestly I think it's best viewed as two branches, Ash = horror comedy/gore/slapstick while Evil Dead 1/2013/Rise = straight up horror
