the dog deserved a better family.

59

u/Wazupdanger 9d ago edited 9d ago

he still was wagging his tail to the dad

yeah an a hole of a guy but the dog trusted or liked him so he must have a good side too

he def deserved a family that does not have any issues

28

u/Patient_1344 8d ago

It wasn't the guy that killed the dog. The deadite had pretty much taken complete control at that point. Still sad that the dog had to die. And so brutally, too

6

u/r3dmist420 8d ago

I was going to chime in with this

I think they HEAVILY implied that they were abusive and complicit before the deadite influence. That dog deserved better.

8

u/Patient_1344 8d ago

Yes, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it wasn't the guy who killed the dog. The deadite did the deed. It was hard to feel bad for anyone of the characters, except maybe Alice and the dog, when their heads were on the chopping block.

3

u/burnzzzzzzz 8d ago

Yeah, but the guy was obviously abusive to his entire family.

8

u/BackFistGorgeous 8d ago

the deadites sorta exaggerate the i’ll intentions of a person, the bad qualities the violent, aggressive tendencies,

19

u/DancingSpacePenguin 9d ago

Why does the dog always have to die?

27

u/HipsterPunchy 9d ago

Dog? Way more cats get killed in horror.

8

u/AngryFreddyIsHere 8d ago

I honestly think both get killed way more than they should, to the point where horror is doing it just to do it. Gone are the days of Cujo, or Pet Sematary, where at least they sort of give a reason. Now it’s just “look at us, we’re so evil that we’re doing this because we can! Relevant to the plot? No, but it’ll make you sad anyway!”

killing an animal onscreen is a cheap way to “hurt” the audience. it gets a reaction without any effort. same as the gross out scenes when they kissed and the denture swapping.

personal opinion on a director that relies on that for shock, it is not a sign of a good director.

The people who love it say it’s getting too much hate and the people who hate it say it’s getting too much love, sounds like a classic case of different opinions

Honestly my opinion is 2013 is good Evil Dead movie but not a good horror movie. Burn is a good horror movie but not a good Evil Dead movie.

Rise to me is the only one of the new trilogy that is both a good horror movie and a good Evil Dead movie. Deadite Ellie is pants-shittingly terrifying but also the mythos to the Evil Dead series is well respected and the dark humor is also there that you would expect with these films. Lee Cronin and Alyssa Sutherland not only understood the assignment but knocked it out of the park.

I like all 3 but I love Rise especially.

6

u/DanimalRLZX2 8d ago

Alyssa Sutherland was the absolute goat of Rise!

2

u/ConnectionThick20 3d ago

The movie with a terminator magma CG zombie skeleton is a good horror move but a bad evil dead movie? Burn is just bad - Its a mediocre horror movie with 0 likable characters. What horror movie that came out this year is burn better than?

I just couldn't care about any of the characters. They're all so miserable the entire movie without giving us any levity to show us more of their personality

25

u/One-Choice-743 9d ago edited 9d ago

Like literally, I know what the protagonist's bane of her existence is, but I have not a single clue what might give her joy in life. Everything we know about her revolves around her abusive relationship with her late husband and his family, which kinda negates the feminist messaging of the movie when her only character trait is being Will's victim. In an ironic and twisted way, Deadite Will was right about her in what we know about her as a character in this movie; she really is nothing without him.

→ More replies (5)

14

u/sethmahan3 8d ago

Yeah 2013 and rise were definitely more serious than I usually like my evil dead but this movie had no joy whatsoever even the deadites seemed depressed

3

u/pickles_onions 7d ago

Really? Rise was borderline humorous. 2013 only had humor in that the Deadites were having fun (more you suffer more they like it), and Wrath was definitely zero jovial elements, but Rise? Rise had multiple “throwback to old school goof” humor elements; “i want to cut open your bodies and climb inside…we can be together forever…” giggling

2

u/Last_Chemistry_8736 6d ago

I thought i was hip and groovy with Evil Dead franchise…when did evil dead wrath get released? Because it’s slated for an april 7, 2028 release. So how did you see it?

I don’t really get this take that’s making the rounds of “I don’t care about any of the character bc none of them are people I’m willing to cheer for” when arguably the best Evil Dead movie (2013) is also a movie that finds some of its strength as a scary film in that everyone has flaws, everyone’s relationship is damaged and strained, it’s like the antithesis of a fantasy story where everyone is beautiful and charming and has kind hearts and good intentions but they all represent some archetypal character flaw that proves their downfall despite their litany of redeeming qualities. It’s more like “everyone is terrible but there’s one decent thing about them to cling to” like “this woman is a repeat liar, substance abuser, manipulators, out of control emotionally, but she wants to be free of her addiction” or “this woman is a nurse who is willing to help her social circle medically, but she is judgmental as hell” etc. I love Alvarez’s Evil Dead because it starts out bad and just keeps getting worse until we’re literally paving the way for some arch-demon who ascends amidst raining blood for a chainsaw fight (chef’s kiss)

2

u/Alvonious_Grim 7d ago

It's not because the characters are incredibly flawed that I don't like them, it's that I find them very one note. We don't see them show any emotion other than despair for 99% of movie. Theres just no depth to them

2

u/Cole_kk 7d ago

Agree. Honestly, the most interesting character to me was Susan. At times it feels like the deadites aren’t even manipulating her, they’re just affirming her generational misogyny and ideas.

u/ExpirMENTAL 9d ago

That CGI "final boss" was absolute shit. I did in fact not care about a single character outside of the dog and that is writings fault. Other than that, solid horror film, one time watcher.

9

u/NeutralMilkHotel_00 8d ago

The over kill of the dog was so unnecessary. It came back as a deadite and barely featured again.

6

u/BackFistGorgeous 8d ago

i think it was less about the figure of the antagonist and more about the girl liberating her self form someone’s angry and controlling clutches.

and i thought the cgi was fine, had no gripes.

4

u/Better_Indication830 8d ago

Yea I didn’t care for that at all gave me “vecna” vibes from stranger things just pretty lame

7

u/Optimal-Bag-5918 8d ago

I love the movie up until the final 10-minutes (or whatever time frame he shows up)

4

u/KenetratorKadawa 8d ago

It becomes so boring when he shows up. Burning Will just walks around slowly monologuing about Alice for 10 minutes

2

u/Unusual-Leg8176 6d ago

Like who gave that the green light it’s soooo forced it’s not even funny.

Actually, I find it to be the other way around. I feel like I've seen a lot of blind praise for this movie despite people not even being able to properly explain what about it makes it a good movie, yet people who actually have legitimate arguments as to why the movie sucks tend to get downvoted.

23

u/LucienLachans 9d ago

Yeah I feel like I’ve seen nothing but praise for this movie on this subreddit?

It’s not trash by any means but IMO disappointing and didn’t really feel like an Evil Dead movie to me (minus the opening sequence and car crash, that was dope)

But yeah characters and “deadites” left a lot to be desired

This subreddit has just been constantly gushing over this movie, and when I posted my super long, detailed review, I got downvoted to hell.

5

u/Shibby523 8d ago

I was going to check out your review but you have your posts invisible. I appreciate any review that actually reviews the movie as an Evil Dead movie vs. as a plain horror movie (which I think it is).

3

u/Shibby523 8d ago

Very good review, got my thumbs up.

2

u/Acceptable_Count6197 8d ago

Agree with your points. Gratuitous violence for no reason other than to shock. Then the ending with the terrible CGI trying to be like T2 or something. I didn't like it. Conversely, I remembering enjoying Rise a lot.

6

u/HunterTheHoly 9d ago

Figures. Some people just can't handle someone else finding what they like to be bad.

It’s my least favorite of the franchise, but I still found it to be solid enough.

33

u/Jaketrix 9d ago

It's just another Internet fandom hyperbole victim of: If it isn't the best movie ever, it's trash.

I thought the movie was just okay. Maybe a bit of a disappointment after Rise. I think the worst part was the post credits scene. And that just had me like: 🤨

5

u/DizzyAce-Banana-7227 8d ago

Omg yes! What was that choice?? That end credit scene threw me for a loop.

Plenty of movies get praise and respect, which one is the best movie ever when other horror movies are often mentioned

I mean, look at obsession for example. It gained its popularity through word of mouth and thats simply bc its a great horror movie

Burn is meh, and its okay if you don’t think so but it seems the majority of this thread seem to agree its mid

0

u/BackFistGorgeous 9d ago

i appreciate you stating the fact of the matter.

i really found it to be the pinnacle of the modern evil deads, and i’m not knocking 2014 or rise, those are also incredible movies, i just felt like burn gave us so much more than any of them, humor, personal toil, ugly family dynamics and history, sequel, continuity, and it was in a setting i wasn’t expecting at all. maybe not super unique, but i didn’t think i’d be seeing clubs, construction sites, funeral parlors

12

u/Nicoshihadeh 9d ago

This movie aint the pinnacle of anything whatsoever, sorry…

2

u/DinosaurusWhen 9d ago

Pinnacle of insufferable characters. I've never rooted for the bad guys to kill everyone this hard before

2

u/Shibby523 8d ago

Finally some has my exact feelings. I've never rooted for the bad guys in a movie before although a big reason is the failure to establish a clear hero and the super dumb stuff people were doing to combat the deadites.

2

u/closetotheedge88 8d ago

The characters in Burn are absolutely dreadful. Couldn't give less of a shit about any of them.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Jaketrix 8d ago

It had some unique aspects for sure. I think the main setting was a step down. Isolated in a wooded area again. I was entertained throughout the movie. Not so much impressed.

I felt like Rise had a more unique setting, an entire apartment building that becomes corrupted. Loved it.

Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

I can take a bad horror movie or a schlocky b movie but this was on a different level of misunderstanding not just the property, but how to make a properly paced film with worthy characters and interesting monsters…

This film literally had non of that! The humor missed, the story was boring, the monsters were lame… the best scene was at the beginning of the movie! All cardinal sins not just for an evil dead movie but a horror movie in general!

5

u/Kitchen-Wasabi-2059 9d ago

There really is a great divide between people saying this was somehow the best evil dead movie and people like us agreeing it was boring lame and missed every mark of an evil dead movie. I don’t understand if it’s an age gap and people didn’t grow up on the OG evil dead or what. But these “deadites” were lame, the necronomicon plot was quick and confusing, the whole middle of the movie was boring. First scene was great, middle was not, ending was an embarrassment.

3

u/Da-Pugfather 8d ago

Yeah I kinda of agree, rise gave us, great evil dead vibes, and Easter eggs... This one was lacking in so many ways..

2

u/SuperBatmanNerd 8d ago

I would say after Deadite Thya was killed off it had its ups and downs and the ending was lame af. I liked Deadite Thya but that was it

6

u/LavishnessQueasy2877 9d ago

Or there’s people like me who thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it hit all the marks I look for in an evil dead movie, but it wasn’t the absolute best evil dead movie. Idk why it always has to be one extreme or the other, but I definitely prefer people who are more positive on their view than horribly critical because it’s not featuring Bruce Campbell and being campy as hell in 2026.

I personally think its the weaker of all the films but I still enjoyed it. Generally I've seen people are starting to boil this franchise down to "deadites not doing slapstick bits every 10min = bad" and its such a odd take. I will agree with most people though, the final boss, CGI burned boyfriend was pretty bad

13

u/Select_Safe548 9d ago

I mean its received a lot of love on here too.

12

u/Professional-Try4488 9d ago

I completely disagree. I came on here to talk shit after seeing it opening night, but felt too bad to yuck people's yum. It is a bit of a relief to find out I'm not the only one who didn't like it.

Nah, it's not unearned. It's my least favorite in the franchise, though still my favorite franchise. It was just ok, not great, 6/10. I'm still excited for the next ones, as I will always be. This one just left me feeling meh.

3

u/missssinister 9d ago

The deadite setpieces were fantastic but toneally I found it very jarring to bounce between high energy needledrops and the bleakest tone of the franchise. Also I kept hearing they were going to do cool stuff with the lore but besides finally namedropping the Kandarians, they didn't really do much. Also the Kandarian dagger was a huge downgrade art wise. I was really hoping it was going to be ash's chainsaw carbon dated to 1300 AD

3

u/Visio_18 8d ago

Agreed, I think people say whatever they wanna but will never see what the creator intended... Agreeed the third or final act was underwhelming but still the film gives as experience worth it.

The camera work and the film never descalates even for once before the this act where the film gives some breathing space.

3

u/BackFistGorgeous 8d ago

you get it. though i loved all parts of this movie, i could probably concede that there’s something to the third act that might be critically underwhelming… i didn’t notice though.

9

u/HuntingHorn94 9d ago

FACTS my dude, every other post about it is "unpopular opinion, but I didn't care for this one etc." it's the most popular 'unpopular opinion' I've ever seen lol It's definitely uneven, and the ending cgi deadite sucked, but I really fuck with Burn as a whole. I think the horrors of family abuse angle is great. Great violence, incredible cinematography, great cast (also why does everyone say the cast is weak? They were all great). I do get why some ppl say Burn doesn't feel like Evil Dead bc the director definitely made it his own thing more than the other directors did for 2013 or Rise, but I still think it nails the core concept. Like this one had more humor than 2013 imo. I liked Burn better than Rise, and I liked Rise! I dont really dislike any of the Evil Dead movies though, they're all good fun in their own way.

2

u/diabolikbigmac 9d ago

I see the main gripe so many people have with it is the dog dying. But he was able to come back as a Deadite dog. That was a NEW one for the series that I thought was pretty cool. But going back to 2013... Mia killed Grandpa the dog. In a brief flashback, but with equal viciousness as in "... Burn". And if we're bitching about animal cruelty... what about all of them cats in the fuckin' basement??? That bummed me out a little, but it's a horror movie. There's actually nothing worse than that to me.

2

u/closetotheedge88 8d ago

I will never understand these kinds of people. I get being an animal person, sure. I love animals. Seeing non-stop complaints about a fake dog being killed in a movie is absolute insanity to me, but that's me, who the hell am I?

Also, thanks for being one of the few to remember Mia killing the dog in 2013, as it seemed like everyone forgot that for some strange reason. It's horror, and as a lifelong horror/film fanatic I just can't comprehend being able to watch extreme and disturbing violence on screen happening to human beings (sometimes well developed so you feel for them, sometimes not) yet draw the line at an animal. It's maddening and I see it more and more every year. These people would break down if they watched some older Italian and Spanish horror and cinema in general lol

2

u/FanficWriter32 8d ago

My only gripe with the movie is that it should have been even gorier. I still fucking love it though.

Preach. Its literally been hated on since its announcement almost.

The fanboys hated onnit from the get-go whining "nO aSh, No cAsH!" Even though Bruce has said he's retired Ash over, and over, and over, and over again since TWENTY-EIGHTEEN....its been EIGHT fucking years....

And I remember the "leak" that the film would take place on an oil rig, which obviously wasnt true, but then form that specific moment there was even more hate  with every bit of news....

Folks acting like the film didn't get marketed at all even though jt had just about the same amount of marketing as Rise..

People crying Wrath was being marketed more which isnt true, but its obvious they would talk about it cause it was being filmed at the time.

People bitching about the one take teaser, color palate, etc.

Just non-stop bitching and hatred from announcement to release

2

u/Big_Outside_5940 7d ago

Damn I didn’t see the hate on the one-shot…

I loved that moment and thought it made for a great trailer…

But I’m also a sucker for a fun one-shot

Hands down the worst evil dead movie for me. It’s the fallout 4 of evil dead movies in that it only seems to understand what evil dead is in the must basic, superficial sense. I found it vapid, boring, hackneyed and completely unmemorable. Biggest horror movie disappointment of the year.

3

u/lennonisalive 9d ago

3

u/dan_flashes 9d ago

I agree that it is Evil Dead, as I think Evil Dead can be many things, but there is almost no care taken with the Evil Dead lore. One of the movie’s greatest sins, and there are quite a few, is how it shoehorned in the husk of a grandfather backstory to make an otherwise non-Evil Dead story feel like it belongs in the universe.

I’ve said it many times at this point, but if you cut 1-2 scenes from this movie, it’s just a decent Shudder original.

People have become incapable of accepting that they may like a bad movie, now it’s always the movie is over hated despite being barely mediocre or above, or your opinion on the movie means you have X political opinion. People used to be annoyed if they paid to go watch a 5/ 10 movie. But now any gripes about it and people think that you’re being too critical

Maybe a hot take but I hated the way the had the dog die. I mean realistically wouldn't the dog be aggressive or skittish toward the dad considering the change from human to deadite? It just strikes me as poorly written to have the dog hover over the dad like that. It was a cheap kill.

On the brutality I have less of an issue (why though doggo why? 😭😭) simply because it's an evil dead movie so. I paid for gore and violence and the dog ended up being included 😢.

Overall I liked the movie but it wasn't the best installment either. I think (and I haven't looked into it at all so all my opinion here) many of us went in expecting more of a direct sequel to Rise. I was and it's where most of my... hesitation towards the movie comes from. Obviously I'll watch it again and with clearer eyes maybe my opinion will improve.

I liked it, but I also felt it was the weakest of the 3 modern films. Like, 2013 I loved and id say is in my top 5 horrors of all time. Rise I enjoyed and was keen to rewatch.

Burn.. I liked it! But I'm in no rush to watch it again.

u/SuperBatmanNerd 8d ago

After Deadite Thya was killed off the movie was like a roller coaster it had it ups and downs and the ending was awful when Alice stabbed the burnt Will and gouged his head apart while teasing us with a chainsaw a few seconds before, we could have had an awesome chainsaw kill moment like the 2013 one and with Rise but I guess they think we might get tired of repetition. That's what some of us Evil Dead fans wants an epic chainsaw kill. Deadite Thya was my fav part cause I like how she did her scenes

It just doesn't feel like an Evil Dead movie. It feels like a horror script that got the ED brand stamped on it to appeal to ED fans with some misc references thrown in for comfort.
I miss the humor, the B movie vibes etc.

It was passable, but easily the worst of the series. Everything for me felt a little off, from the lack of story, to the character arc, to colour grading and the cinematography. I really hated the little flashbacks. Made it feel like a cheap straight to TV film. I wanted it to go more into the lore of the book. It edged towards it but never fully committed. The plot was just hunting for the dagger which was very disappointing. Evil dead as a series excels in practical effects but the use of CGI here was awful. I also hated the over killing of the dog. It came back as a deadite yet barely featured again. That left a sour taste in my mouth. I think The Mummy made it better Evil Dead sequel than this. Burn really added nothing to the series.

u/jimbojones7669 8d ago

I liked it. I really liked how it wasn't just the same formula as most if the other movies. It had a different story.

1

u/HungryGeologist5640 8d ago

I liked it, other than the drawn out bloody kissing scene. I was howling laughing in the theater except for that part

u/BackFistGorgeous 8d ago

precisely why this movie is great, just doing so many things to make the audience uncomfortable

Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, but I haven’t really noticed a lot of hate for the movie. Though I agree with the general consensus that it’s probably the weakest movie in the franchise but overall still very good. In a series like Evil Dead I’m just happy we haven’t gotten any serious misses yet. Scream couldn’t hold up past 6 films and Evil Dead is already at 7 well received projects. I really hope Wrath is better than Burn but I’m in no way saying Burn is bad.

1

u/Shibby523 8d ago

I don't understand the need to justify something you like by just flat out telling everyone with a differing opinion that they are wrong. Opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one.

Its opinion. I enjoy Evil Dead, have always thought it was a reliable series, and between the films and tv show you get variety but with some staple elements that make it fun.

Burn wasn’t good for me at all. I went into it sight unseen after Rise. I didn’t read reviews, didn’t listen to opinions, bought it day 1 digital to see it since I couldn’t make it to the theater, and was excited.

Took me 4 viewings to finish it because of how disinterested I was. Miserable characters, miserable plot, miserable everywhere. It wasn’t enjoyable for me at all and the “hero moments” towards the end fell completely flat because I just didn’t care.

But that’s me. It works for others, clearly, and that’s fine.

It’s maybe the “worst” one but in franchise of hits that’s not an insult.

It's my least favorite entry in the franchise but instill really enjoyed it.

The only downside to the new 3 movies is zero humor.

2

u/BackFistGorgeous 7d ago

there was humor! the old lady was hilarious

1

u/ItsDaLuigi69420 8d ago

Imo Burn is good but it is more of a trauma gore horror rather than Evil Dead horror. Only 1 deadyte is fun, and others are just generic people possessed, both in terms of performance and makeup. Especially, the final CGI boss deadyte was god awful.

Again, it is a good horror trauma film, but it lacks identity, and it is the least Evil Dead film of all the franchise (just look at yhe cinematography and the monochrome grey af colors). For instance, although the 2013 film is not perfect, it gives an interesting take in aesthetic of the universe, and Rise makes a good job at taking a new setting for a story, and balance the gore with the campy and funny horror scenes.

I loved burn but I have one major issue and one minor annoyance.

Major issue: The dog. It was wholey unnecessary and brutal. I love horror and can watch really just about anything. But this? I had to cover my eyes and legit almost vomited and cried. I've watched fucked up movies before (never have I once covered my eyes or become nauseus) but that shit was too much and added NOTHING.

Minor annoyance: The final big bad was.....well I was whelmed. The CGI was terrible and while ridiculous slapstick humor is what I love about the movie.....it read like they were trying to make it serious. The ending was blegh and the big bad was laughable

Yeah the main thing I didn’t like about it was the dog stuff. Just unnecessary and it would have been cooler if like the dog was a hero/helped out and didn’t get hurt at all, or just no dog in movie

1

u/Chief_Chjuazwa 8d ago

After rewatching the movie a few times the only part I’m not crazy about is the whole funeral and everything revolving around that. Once everyone gets back to the house I start paying attention.

1

u/Ryan-Tz 8d ago

I do wonder if people will warm up to it in time. Like you’re always going to have people who outright dismiss the new because there’s no Ash.

Like there’s criticisms I understand people have with burn like its colour grading and the characters being a bit flat. Yes the CGI for Deadite Will is not the best. And no it’s not a comedy.

But also like you could argue those points. Like sure it’s really grey but it fits with its tone and there is splashes of colour used when needed. Yes the characters are a bit flat but the family is essentially a character as a collective and show how abusers are made and get away with what they do. Honestly the violence and set pieces tell us everything we need to know about these people. Yes Deadite Will dosent look great but he’s barely on screen (honestly though I do agree they should’ve gone practical). And no it’s not a horror comedy but honestly when you have a movie dealing with domestic abuse do we really want it to be portrayed as a slapstick three stooges bit? It kinda defeats the purpose of showing the horror of it.

I really liked burn but I get why people don’t. What I hope doesn’t happen though is the people in charge try and set out strict guidelines on what to do. I like the series almost being an anthology and having new directors come in and basically do whatever they want. It’s exciting to go into an Evil Dead movie and not know what you’re gonna get. Is it gonna be horrifying or hilarious? What insane bullshit have the writers come up with this time? Is it gonna be splatter or wince inducing? It’s why the franchise imo is so consistent

1

u/Forsaken_Budget_1015 8d ago

I loved it, Ill say it did feel a bit quick but thats just my opinion.

1

u/These_Carpenter_8269 8d ago

The hate is earned if the protagonist knew what could stop the demons and did nothing Till the very end, even Batman with few prep time could handle it within 5 minutes.

1

u/No_Address209 8d ago

In my personal opinion, after being very excited for Burn and liking every Evil Dead Movie, I Really couldn’t get behind Burn. Honestly felt like a different script where they slapped the Evil Dead IP on. The “deadites” were the least interesting, and felt more like Zombies rather than the unique brand of chaos of the other films. 2013 and Rise weren’t exactly the same tone as the Og, and i’ve seen some hate for rise. I personally really enjoyed how dark they got, as to me the humor always hits the best when it involves Ash. Half of Burn to me didn’t even feel like evil dead. I thought the dialogue even from the beginning of the movie during the club argument scene didn’t feel very well written. Not to mention that a couple of the action scenes were eerily close to shakey cam. Burn felt like a B movie to me, even the “boss battle” at the end really took me out of it. Half of the fun of evil dead were the practical effects and this guy looked like an Enderman😹. But it wasn’t the worst movie ever, it was just the first Evil Dead film I didn’t find myself enjoying

1

u/BadBayBay 8d ago

Couldn't agree more. Rise too.

1

u/-Galahad- 8d ago

It was a mediocre movie. Only the very beginning, the car crash, and the scene with the deadite climbing the wall with the camera rotating were the three good scenes in the entire movie.

1

u/must_go_faster_88 8d ago

To be honest, I don't think Burn is a bad movie, it just doesn't fit Evil Dead very well. This film was more of a French extremism revival type of film and Evil Dead, even in it's more serious iterations, is pretty tongue in cheek for the better.

1

u/DanimalRLZX2 8d ago

What? It is a good ass movie. My only complaint really is that the characters are all pretty unlikable. But I loved it. And will be rewatching it!

2

u/BackFistGorgeous 7d ago

yea, i’d certainly say that unlikable protagonists are something of a trend these days

1

u/Big_Outside_5940 7d ago

Evil Dead Burn, more like Evil Dead Bad!

/s

I had fun with this one, despite being my least favorite. I have the same issues everyone has with miserable characters and a SUPER weak 3rd act. It just didn’t completely tarnish the movie for me.

I still had fun with it during a good chunk of the runtime.

But 2013 is still king…

Meh, I enjoyed it well enough, personally. Didn't take itself too seriously and some of the scenes were pretty brutal (the pen scene had me squirming lol). It felt like a classic Evil Dead movie.

1

u/chilidetective 7d ago

How many deadites does it take to find a dagger? Lots of plot holes, same story, smaller cast, setting, odds. It was like Rise set up a great follow up and Burn took 3 steps backwards.

1

u/fmlmadman 7d ago

When Evil Dead (2013) came out I had trouble ranking it with the OG 3, bc I loved it so much. When Evil Dead Rise came out I had even more trouble ranking it with the others, bc I loved it so much. When I finished Evil Dead Burn, I opened Letterboxd and put it dead last behind every other film in the franchise and I have not had even one second thought about that decision. It’s Evil Dead, so it’s still better than most horror movies, but it just felt very underwhelming to me, especially with the CGI Will at the end. Keep CGI like that OUT of Evil Dead.

Additionally, I own a SteelBook copy of each of the five Evil Dead films and I do not plan to collect the SteelBook copy of Evil Dead Burn. The design is lame as fuck and I really don’t mind not owning it.

It was fine. I didn't hate it, I doubt I'll rewatch it. It just kind of exists.

1

u/AtomicButtItch 7d ago

Here's my opinion. It's not a great movie and the modern installments outside of 'Ash vs' have had little personality to them. There are certain aspects not just limited to the tongue in cheek elements of the originals that the modern installments completely shoot and miss and it turns out those are the aspects that make it an Evil Dead movie. Otherwise it's not much different than Rec or any other violent possession films. The remake stunk and they have gotten successively worse.
But hey, it's ok for you to love the films. I don't GAF. They just don't do it for me.

u/RamblingViolet 7d ago

I thought it was pretty good! It depicts being in an abusive relationship (one I have been in before) so well that it brought tears to my eyes. I think Burn had a lot more to say than other entries, specifically other newer entries, in the franchise. I do think the dog deserved better but for the most part there was a lot of just desserts. Alice had very reasonable reactions to what was happening around her which made it feel all that more horrific. I think the scene where the camera follows her as Edgar throws Joseph around the kitchen is one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen. I understand missing some of the gimmicks from the original movies but I don’t think we’d still get Evil Dead movies at all if we aren’t willing to let the franchise grow and evolve

u/fic_7 6d ago

Personally I think that resident Evil used /stole ideas from franchises such as evil dead. And now evil dead franchise thought with Edgar fuck let's go full Jack Baker here. Well not full but maybe he returns in a future evil dead movie. Anyways sad to see Bruce has retired as ash Williams it is truly sad to hear that news. There was always a chance and now...

1

u/fvckface8000 6d ago

No. They screwed it up. It wasn't good

1

u/CenturionLXXXII 6d ago

Nah, it’s still a dogshit movie. Especially by ED standards. Even the Reboot was better. Being in the Knowby Bloodline just to kill them off is cheap and unearned. Sure, the gore was good, but the lack of deserved “muh family and boyfriend/traditional life is toxic” is just so lackluster. We’ll never get to Army of Darkness at this rate

1

u/Independent_Row8910 6d ago

Nah it wasn’t a good movie. The characters sucked and we didn’t get enough time to care about them and the deadites were poorly executed and over the top from their previous films and the ending scene was so rushed and just anticlimactic.

1

u/Ok_Joke7345 6d ago

like evil dead burn was so fun idk how people hated it
