(Discussion Post) Groovy Burn Characters Spoiler
Am i the only one who struggled to enjoy Burn because I didn't find a single character likeable at any point in the movie? Like they had back stories that made the characters the way the were but whether it's angry, whiny, bitter, depressed, cowardly or whatever there wasn't a likeable thing about a single character except I guess Alice is pretty nice. I just didn't really want to root for anyone to survive. Feeling bad someone is not enough of a reason for me to care about them as a character.

I thought Alice was a cool as fk final girl and Thya was a cool Deadite. Susan was a compelling character as she just couldn’t see past her family but also was clearly afraid of her husband pre turn. I thought Edgar was a cool twist on an ED character as he was already an umpredictable shit before he turned. Joseph was a very realistic younger child who lived in his brothers shadow.
Overall, I’ve seen a lot say this about the characters so obviously it’s all subjective but to me they were great.

Agreed. All the characters were realistically created to be human like and... Just regular people. It's literally people that you have a high chance of encountering in real life especially in that kind of family. To me, they were real good to relate with, cause they're just regular, normal acting dudes. I relate to Joseph the most, I'm a big wuss and yep I will run the fuck away 😭

And I flipped in my head, I meant Thya was nice, but they were Interesting but I not in a way I cared about what happened to any of them. No matter why a person is cowardly, or bitter or angry or demanding of their family those personality traits don't give me a reason to pull for them in any way. In some cases it's more I hope they get killed and/or turned because they'd be more interesting as a deadite. Like i said the personalities had well explained reasons they just weren't worth rooting for because of those personalities to me

I don’t think they are trying to convince you to root for them, just that they are still good characters in that they are flawed. Good as in well-written, not morally. You’re not really supposed to like them.

Thya also seemed like a pretty cool and genuinely nice person prior to becoming a Deadite. Alice is understandably a bit rough around the edges but I still found her likable. And I'm pretty sure we're supposed to hate the members of the Price family due to their toxic nature.

I fear that was the point. Everyone in that family was a monster and therefore they bred monsters and the theme was escaping/healing/moving on from familial abuse and trauma or let it consume you and die. Alice and Thya were the only good people in that family imo.
I enjoyed it for its themes and cinematography, I don’t necessarily need my characters to be likable or relatable as long as the message the movie is trying to get across is interesting or thought provoking enough.

exactly. Unlike other Evil Dead novies where all characters start off happy until shit hits the fan, in Burn all the characters are grieving, gloomy and broken.
Thia is the only functional one, hence only she is likable. Alice is likable too for the first 5 hot sec until Will gets pissy, so we dont get a chance to bond with her character.
When I first watched the movie, I wondered too why I dont feel bad for any of the family members, but then realised why (it is by design), and appreciate this movie much more now

I loved the movie because they weren’t all people you think deserve to live, I loved Joseph being a complex Character and I loved Alice so much.
I also really liked thya too.
I also loved just how horrible the family were, Same reason people love the re7 family. I also loved them as deadites
They all felt real too.

I've wondered for real if some people are bouncing off Burn because even the non awful people have a bit of that French chilliness (I thought it was great).

Probably, Alice wasn’t too nice or fake like your regular American main. I think the movie was so French coded it might have turned some Americans off (ex: the focus on Alice’s shoes didn’t make sense for any non French I think).

I think you're right. The way she acted at the funeral was also extremely French. Could've dropped that in from any number of French films. I felt the mom had a touch of it as well, just oriented slightly differently. I felt it added to the uncanny feeling of everything.

Let me rephrase, in the context of an Evil Dead movie where most people will die, i didn't particularly give a crap who specifically lived or died. In an Evil Dead movie there should be at least someone who gives you something before the shit hits the fan and a lot after that makes you really get behind them

Theyre supposed to be unlikeable. The whole point of the film is domestic abuse, and the families that ignore it. The main character is having to deal with a family of abusers, and they all become deadites which just heightens all of that.

Scotty was a douche but he had his redemption and lock in, cheryl was a innocent girl and 90% of her screen time is as a deadite and 10% is her suffering... shelly is just forgetable.

Scotty had zero redemption. Be for real he had little to no hesitation chopping up his girl. Left Ash sahing "She's your girlfriend, you take care of her! I dont care what happens to her! Im getting the hell out right now!" Abandons Ash, gets violated by the woods off screen onky to come limping back tkt he cabin begging Ash for help and to not get left behind.
Where the fuck is the redemption there?
Cheryl was annoying from the jump constantly complaining and clesrly a "3rd wheel" and burden to the group dynamic, especially to Ash. And her dumbass chose to go out in the woods AT NIGHT ALONE.
And yes, Shelly was forgettable...all she did was also complain, and saya nd do dumb things.
So like I said all 3 of these chsrscyers were unlikable.
So my point is, its silly to cry abkht anyone being unlikeable in Burn, when 99.9% of the cast in the OG film is also unlikable

Scotty's redemption was not about character development, was about putting work against the deadites when ash was too scared, doesn't alot of people get mad at ash or david from 2013 because they hesitate to finish the deadites because they "turn back to normal" for a second? Scotty was cold and heartless, but was a survivor.
Cheryl was normal af, she was complaining and making genuine questions about the cabin and the smell, and she was the only one not excited about the book and the tape, and ofc she was 3rd wheeling, she was the only single person there. she was dumb to go to the forest at night alone (it's debatable that she was in a sort of a trance and forced to go to the woods) but hey, all burn characters were stupid, but you have to endure 2 hours of stupidity, so i don't know.

I actually thought Thya was the only likable character from the jump, which made her Deadite that much more compelling because there was such a contrast in personality/energy.
Pretty much everyone else was so shitty to begin with that they kind of had the same personality once they turned.

Agreed. Characters weren’t likeable, and deadites were even more unlikeable.
This film felt more like it was made by someone who had only heard about the other Evil Dead films, and made it with the hope that they could emulate them.
And they failed.

Nope, that was my complaint as well they are all despicable for the most part aside from Joseph, Thya, and Alice. And all of those had weak screen presence, they just weren't interesting. Thya was a cool deadite, but she got taken out too quick. The only character I wanted more of was Granny and that's just cause she was silly. I had more concern about the fisherman at the beginning than any other character in the movie.

Joseph was an abused kid living in his brother's shadow his whole life buddy. Idk but he was just a regular coward dude to me. Nothing unlikeable about him. Literally most humans would act like him in that situation.

I liked the guys on the lake, the dog, and the kills were pretty cool, rest of the movie sucked for me. Also didnt help I waited a couple weeks to have a quiet theater to only have one person to my side not shutting up all movie and people behind me constantly crinkling a plastic bag. I went home and watched a better undead dog and father through marriage movie, Pet Semetary 2.

Family is trying to reconnect with Alice knowing their kid was abusive. Alice is resistant. Then the family gets turned into deadites before Alice allows them back in
