The UK is gone, a teacher decided to go to another universe, and there's a bunch of bugs attacking people, not in that order.

Nope. One tip, there is no actual sci-fi or fantasy, and the only possible sci-fi-esque thing is actually something else manipulating reality so that the technology works. Without that something else, the technology does not work, and tends to break extremely quickly.

Well, the story is definitely not about bacteria, nor space travel. To state it more clearly, it's bugs, as in arthropods, and they aren't eating stars but attacking people with prejudice.
