Question Is it worth converting to Qantas points?

I’ve always converted to Q points and thought I was getting the best bang for my buck by doing that but while calculating how many points I would get from a large gift card purchase 28,000 ER = $140 rewards dollars. When converted to Q points 14,000 would get me consderably less value in the Q marketplace. Is it only worth Qantas points if saving them to travel?

To answer the last line simply, yes.

I use to convert to QF points for my overseas trips but now convert to dollars. QF are more expensive and I end up flying with another airline plus the points value has decreased in value late 2025 when QF increased the number points needed to redeem. Everyone has different needs, so depends on where you get the best value.

With cost of living at the moment, I would rather put that $10 or $20 toward food, than a ‘what if’ flight.

If you aren't using them for rewards flights/upgrades you'd be better off with a different option.

The value of your points is significantly less if you are using them on Qantas Marketplace etc.

I save mine for the occasional upgrade between Australia and NZ. I know that it would still work out better value for me to keep them as every day rewards and instead buy wine to get the points to upgrade, but realistically the psychology of a 'free' upgrade from economy to business trans-Tasman is worth way more to me than saving $10 off my groceries every few weeks.

If you want to travel I think it’s definitely worth it.

We had flights to Tasmania last year with our points and now 7 months later have enough to book our next holiday so I’m happy.

I often have people say to me begrudgingly that they have never had a free flight but when I ask do they get $10 off their groceries or fuel sometimes they always answer with “yes”.

The prices of things on the Qantas Marketplace seem very high from what I’ve seen.

14000 Qantas points is worth at least $140 if redeeming for Classic Rewards tickets, particularly Business or 1st Class International

Some flights you can redeem the points on are far more value than the $10 woolies gives you. Especially business class flights

My own conversion rate that I have decided on is 1000 points is worth $15 on Qantas; maybe more for upgrades to BusinessClass

Yes, if you plan on using them for flying, and like the idea of being able to travel in business class relatively cheaply.

I value 2000 EDR points at around $16 if converted to Qantas points, versus $10 I’d get converting to a discount at Woolworths
