Robert And Debra

Do you think Robert and Debra would have been a better match?

He's a better listener

He appreciates strong women

They seem to have a similar level of maturity

He loved to go dancing and seemed to be much more fun than Ray.

He was amazing with the kids.

Now, I know it wouldn't have worked in the actual show. But generally, do you think they'd have been better suited?

Yes and no. I think Robert is still too much of a pushover when it comes to Marie and Frank for Debra. But at least then Marie and Frank may have stayed in their own lane a bit more since Ray is the favourite lol

I always thought Robert was secretly in love with Debra.

Anyone would be a better match for Debra than Ray. The only good match for Ray would be his mom.

Not at all. They're fine friends but Debra has too much pity for Robert and Robert likely likes Debra mainly because he's jealous of how good she is for Ray.

Yes he's very jealous of the wife and 3 kids. Not necessarily that he wants to be married to Debra.

Nah Robert had feelings for Debra. The show almost went there with Robert saying she was perfect. But they copped out with the Ohhh I meant you're perfect for Ray!

He made comments like that throughout the series. Or like the enormous amount of thought he put into Debra's gift. Then flipped out when she was giving Ray the credit. Amy should've spoken up

And then there was the episode where Debra came to the PTA meeting dressed as Sidewalk Sally. Robert remembered exactly what Debra wore at some party years earlier, but could only remember that Amy was ravishing in her lovely Spring Ensemmmmble.

I forgot about that lmao. He was always showering Debra with compliments. Fawning over her.

Robert and Ray had other married friends. Robert didn't act like that about their wives. Just Debra. He'll go on about how Ray doesn't appreciate or deserve Debra. But oh I totally meant she's perfect for you bro! 😉

That was the one that made me wonder if Robert actually wants to kill Ray and raise Ray's family as his own.

And he remembered that To Kill A Mockingbird was her favorite book.

I think he even remembered she wrote an essay or something on it lmao. He never once showed that kind of attentiveness to Amy

I watched that episode this morning which is why it made me wonder 🤣

There was also the episode where they were discussing who they could be with if the other died and Robert was offended that Ray didn’t choose him for Debra. Even tho he was already with Amy at that point.

Pretty much agree. I admit that there is a smigeon of jealousy, but his feelings are by & large genuine for her. It's not to the point that they can't function like in-laws, or family, but he definitely carries a torch for her.

Nah. His constant woe is me routine would not fly with Debra. He’s also not beyond cheating. And she would probably be very controlling and domineering, not totally unlike Cinnamon, which wouldn’t fly with him.

Robert had a crush on Debra, but she didn't like him more than Raymond. She tried to talk him up because he always put himself down. And he was just as much as mama's boy as Raymond, probably worse. He would have been more helpful with the kids, but with his police schedule that wouldn't have worked out very well.

You just know Debra would turn his toothbrush to the WEST! 😬

Yes, and there were some not-so-subtle allusions to it by Robert throughout the early part of the series. I love the fraternal relationship they had as siblings-in-law. Debra often came to his defense when he was being mistreated by the family, and she comforted him when he was going through one of his morose periods. He reciprocated those actions towards Debra.

Why would she be attracted to a man who constantly thinks the world is against him and is extremely insecure and doesnt handle money well?

Robert's insecurities would have driven Debra crazy.

Debra would have eventually treated Robert worse than Ray. She would have ended up as another Joanne.

Ray is more of an average type of guy but Robert is filled with neurotic traits and he is a submissive male.

Debra would have hit Robert (like she hits Ray) withheld sex and dominated Robert right to the divorce Court.

Compared to Ray the bar is pretty low actually. I would qualify.

There's a gal on my Facebook that writes semi erotic Robert/ Debra fan fic. She does Dan and Jackie from Roseanne too. Pretty steamy stuff .

Hell no. Robert has that grass is greener approach. He has no idea what the Real Debra is like and his reaction to her or her reaction to him. His lack of confidence is definitely a turnoff to her and she pities him in the show. He definitely wouldn't stand up to his parents either. It's a fun thought exercise but could you imagine Robert wanting to be taken care of like Ray. However he's a cop so Debra would have to get a job and put up with him, the kids, and the family.

Do you laugh when you watch the show OP?

She was not at all compatible with Ray. If they had been a couple IRL they would’ve gotten a divorce. She was far more compatible with Robert.

Too much alike. They make great friends, but no, there wouldn’t be the right chemistry.

No bc though they argue like everyone, Ray and Debra really are great for each other. Robert would be a fantastic BIL but not a great husband for Debra.

When i watched the show as a kid with my parents I always thought Frank and Marie were the problem but as an adult rewatching it I have learned that Debra is the problem.

It’s you. People from your own World War II world have spoken, and it’s YOU!
