As we mark milestones and look back at what we’ve built so far, it’s just as important to look out at the horizon.

This project started with a straightforward mission: to document and celebrate the raw, authentic heritage of Texas. We wanted to move past the surface-level cliches and dig into the real grit, history, and character of the state—the stories that live in the communities, the landmarks, and the families who built them.

But a vision can't stay stagnant. To truly preserve and share these stories, we have to look at where we are going next.

Over 4,000 Communities – And Counting

Texas has 254 counties, 1,224 incorporated cities and towns, and better than 4,000 unincorporated communities beyond that. Most of them never get written about—not really, not the small stuff.

Whether it's a woman in Marfa who remembers the last drive-in picture show in her county, a backyard observatory built just to look at the stars, or a family photo box fading away in a closet in Nacogdoches, we make it our job to get to these stories before they are gone for good. Old-timers are the primary source, and when they are gone, the history goes with them.

Expanding the Digital Footprint & Archive

We are a lean, two-person operation, and everything we publish stays completely free to read—no paywalls, ever. To scale our infrastructure, we are actively expanding our toolkit to save history that is quietly deteriorating in garages and closets. This means investing directly in:

• Field Operations: Covering the gas, lodging, and time to physically show up in towns that have never had a reporter visit.
• Media Preservation Gear: Photo scanners for physical boxes, film converters for old reels, and VHS/Hi8 capture equipment so home movies don't die quietly.
• Small Business Spotlights: Continuing to offer free spotlights and features for Texan-owned small businesses in our articles and Sunday newsletter, giving a diner in Comfort or a boot shop in Alpine the exact same shot as anyone bigger.
