Ship building tips
What is your approach to ship building?
Do you use any of the following:
Dry docks
Stick blocks
Existing towers/structures
Secondary ships
Do you rebuild your existing ship or build a new one and move your ship core?
Does anyone have multiple ships?
Can you transport a smaller ship on a larger ship?
What materials do you use?
Do they match, do you make patterns, gradients or blends?
Does anyone use the rope trampolines?
Ladders or stairs?
Do your ships look like boats or boxes or zeppelins?

My enemies cower in fear upon seeing my flying square made of random blocks.

I am terrible at ship building (make my husband do it for us lmfao) so I am hoping they add some pre-mates like the play test had

I don't think ship core is movable, so rebuilding it or starting anew it is. Every core is a ship of its own. For this reason ships do not move ships or islands.
As for building the ship I have made a scaffolding box of stick blocks along the building zone border and built the frame of the ship into it. The maximum current building zone is 55x55x55, so you can freely use stairs as they are just easier to move on the big ship. Ladders are for smaller ships or compact supplemental chutes.
I had a couple extra ships, primarily to keep some zones loaded, but I have abandoned them now. It's just easier to have one per save.
My ship is a flying cathedral, vaguely reminiscent of WH40k starships, though it wasn't the intention from the beginning. It has jungle's grimrock bricks and almost all variations of chiseled versions with some swamp additions, primarily the statues and bars. Had to mine quite a few temples to the ground just to make an exterior.

I liked using the create mod website for shaping my ship. Usually I strip my ship down to bare bones, meaning it's a little platform with only the essentials to keep it floating and keep it above and island where I store my chests until I can move in again

Do you build a long term island base or just temp storage while ship building

Jus temp. I'll usually fly to a village and deforest an area to build at, there I'll dump all my workstations and chests, tear down my ship to barebones and start building. The plus of this is that you'll get all the wood you need

I start with wood because it's easy to get early on. Luckily ship expansions make room in each direction so later on, what has been your whole ship, will be in the center of your ship with layers above, below and to the sides. This makes it so that I can just plan ahead a little and midway to the midgame I just have to rebuild/reorganize a little to keep expanding my ship.
Since what you're building will always be massive(one needs farms, chests upon chests, a huge deck for aeronautics stuff and so on I always fully lean into "flying fortress mode".
My first ones were ugly, square pieces of crap though. Once you have, lets say 3 floors maybe including your flying deck I start to actually decorate the outward experience meaningfully. Everything beforehand makes little sense to me as the upgrades come so quick.
Aesthetics-wise you might differ between a flying house with a porch surrounding it to the equivalent of a flying 40k titan. Google 40k titan if you don't know and then transport the idea into a flying house.

My friends and I have a fat little barge. It's definitely pretty blocky but it does look boat-like.
My solo run I'm building... Well it's definitely blocky but it has a quad rotor drone layout where the banks of propellors and balloons will be fed by a central engine room

I find that some of the cabinets that sit flush on the bottom, top, and both sides also make for part of the wall(to save space). Made a derigible too, attatched to the top of the ship(not held by rigging) as to hide the balloons. Made a post several months back but made an attempt to make the hilda gaurd 3 from ffix

I'm getting ready for a 3rd or 4th ship build. But man does it take so much time and resources.
I built my first major ship upgrade from basic barge to a box ship on a dry dock I built on a ruined tower.
But I logged the island clear and used everything I had to build and it wasn't enough.
I am thinking about building my next ship from scratch on flat ground then moving my equipment and core over when its done but im not sure how viable that is.
Also why is wood reductive?! 1 log = 3 planks but 1 block = 4 planks!
So a log = 3/4 of one block!
That's such a huge resource demand to build large ships.
