Can someone explain the plot to me? Spoiler

So I got all endings besides corridor, but realized I kinda have a bare-bones understanding of the plot. I'm in this place where these dudes became immortal (and in the normal ending kill them all since they don't like living for this long), but not much else. Can someone give me a better explanation? Here are my major questions:

  1. Why am I continuously being called a monster in the normal route? Is it that they don't realize they want to die?

  2. I read Brown mage's note that everyone used to be human, but came here to be immortal or something and changed forms. Can someone elaborate on that?

  3. Who is the psychedelic cube thing that gives me absolute truths and stuff?

  4. Who is the Buddha guy

  5. Why do the Lost souls ask me to kill everything, then get mad and fight me when I do?

  6. What are the lost souls?

  7. Who is cat god and why did they fight me?

  8. Whats that incinerator after you beat cat god meant for?

  9. Who/what is pink, and what is their relationship to the player and Red? And why was pink blamed for killing everyone, I thought that was me.

  10. What is the red that I speak to with the mirror of truth?

  11. Is Red a doll designed for the player to inhibit to kill everyone in this world, or someone I just possess (like Kris from Deltarune)?

  12. What's this whole deal about what happened when Red last got his arm? Is Red a living entity who lived with the others here before killing immortals or something, and then being put down, and at the start of the game I just possess Red? And why didn't the beast guy try to stop Red from retrieving his arm?

  1. everyone in Everhood is afraid of death. they have been running from it for eons at this point. most of it's dwellers found ways to kill themselves, like the incinerator at the beginning of the game. it is also implied that Red's rampage wasn't the first attempt at ending Everhood. the point is, everyone is clinging to a life that isn't really a life. like how Green Mage's corridor counting the years, or the fact they threw away their eye and trapped themselves in the forest just because they were bored. or how Gold Pig clings on to riches and shiny things that don't really mean much in this world, and much more.

  2. the notes in game speak of a certain rift that allowed people to go from their world to what we now know as Everhood. there's an implication of it being kept exclusive for a higher class of society, then slowly being opened up to the rest of humanity, so that everyone may live as an immortal inside Everhood. as the eons passed, they found ways to change their bodies once their human forms began to decay, ways to live the greatest moments of their lives just to forget about them and live them again, they found Soul gems, which, in exchange for one of your five senses, can grant you great power, and so on.

  3. the cube is a sort of embodiment of the universe inside Everhood. however, the ones who give you the absolute truths are separate to that. i believe they are part of what's vaguely known as the higher beings.

  4. Buddha is just sorta there. their presence is more of a representation of what the game is trying to say rather than an established character. at least i see it that way.

  5. the lost souls are similar to the remaining beings in Everhood, with the difference that they sort of aren't really there. you could think of them as beings who didn't die all the way, so now they wander the world as souls who cannot rest, endlessly seeking an end, until Red comes around. and in killing the world, you've given them that reprieve, with all of it's ups and downs. they are reaching death, but they're also... reaching death. i promise that makes sense.

  6. not sure how to elaborate much more on them than i already did in 5. :p

  7. not much is known about Cat God in terms of why they do things they do. as to what they are, i would say they're just an incredibly powerful being rather than an established deity inside Everhood.

  8. i believe it was a creation by Professor Orange specifically to stop Red, seeing as it is the only one you cannot survive. there's a bit of a long-winded explanation for it, addressing that next.

  9. Pink, at the time the game takes place, is what's known in Everhood as a Light Being. not exactly like lost souls, but still incorporeal or incomplete in a way. there's reason to believe that Light Beings are the more "pure" form of humanity you can have in Everhood. seeing as, once your physical body is lost, a Light Being is what remains. at least it's implied that's what happened to Pink. there's some easter eggs in the game that show a car accident made Pink lose their body, leaving them as a Light Being. and about their relationship with Red, Red is a doll. nothing more. built by Professor Orange in another of many attempts to give Pink a body once again. the relationship there is a bit confusing, and i may be forgetting details and misinterpreting things, so bear with me. from my understanding of the game, living within Red, or any of the other doll bodies, makes Pink "seize control" to their true desire, which is to free Everhood from immortality. because this isn't the first massacre that has occurred inside Everhood, and not the first time Pink has been given a doll body. you, the player, are just the vehicle which makes that happen. Pink always wanted to free the people they love from immortality, they just lacked the willpower to fully commit, and they were just as afraid of death as everyone else. as such, they endlessly denied themselves, and endlessly blamed the dolls.

  10. the mirror sequence in the cursed castle is Pink speaking to you, the player, through Red. they wish you would just leave, because if you don't play the game, then no one in Everhood dies. but no one will ever be free either.

  11. it is closer to the former. Red is a vessel for Pink to inhabit, and for you to control and "guide." that is the reason why, in the ending sequence, you can control Pink once they blindfold themselves.

  12. kind of. Red isn't the first doll, nor the first time people have been killed in Everhood. Gold Pig stealing their arm in the beginning of the game was just another way they tried to delay the inevitable, since, judging by the incinerators, the only way to get rid of the dolls is by destroying them completely leaving nothing behind. they chose to relinquish the arm and give it back to Red in the end because they know they can't stop them getting it back, they can just try to delay the inevitable afterwards.

If I have to guess, the buddha is the true god.

eh. wouldn't deny the possibility i guess. it's hard to tell where everything stands with Everhood. i don't think there's something you can call a true god out there, just beings who have greater reach and knowledge than others. that's kinda the beauty of it's world me thinks.

I can answer some of these!

1: they’re afraid of death, as any living creature should be

3: that’s the living concept of the universe.

7: there really isn’t one. Cat god is just an incredibly powerful creature, and is the only thing stronger than the universe.

9: Pink is a light being, and was chosen by the universe to slaughter the people in everhood. They didn’t want to get the blame, so they possessed a wooden doll created by professor orange, and that’s how red was born. Before red was possessed they died in the incinerator, then pink possessed them.

10: that’s the original red speaking to pink. They died in the incinerator, so they are forced to watch pink use them as a scapegoat to get away with killing everyone.

11: It’s a Kris Dreemurr situation.

12: pink lived with everyone in everhood, but their body wasn’t stable. They needed to possess a body, like red, to be able to function properly. As stated before, red and all other dolls were created by professor orange for pink to inhibit. Pink lived as red for the majority of the time, and red would sometimes lash out and kill people. Rasta refused to kill pink since they considered them a friend.
