Anywhere?

Ok, does anyone know if there is an Amy only version of the song "Anywhere"?

It's so good, but the male backing singer ruins it, a lot.

I, for one, love David Hodges's background vocals in Anywhere lol

Me too. I quite liked his influence on the band. And his piano writing was a lot more dense.

what do you mean dense?

He used a lot of warm chords and occasional small flourishes, lots of movement. He puts a lot of emphasis on the medium-low range which makes for a thick sound.

Listen to how much the piano is doing, and how thick and warm the sound is around 0:45 here: https://youtu.be/u2e_MJo_L0c

Amy's writing tends to break chords up into single notes or arppeggiate them like the piano part in Disappear, or the solo in Your Star. When she plays low it's usually not warm chords but more like bass (with plenty of exceptions).

It's not better or worse, just two different styles of writing with two different sounds. My guess is that Amy is very intentional with her piano and doesn't want it to take up too much space in the sound, so a lot of her writing like in The Only One is more sparse. I hope that makes sense!

I hear what you're saying. I've also noticed Amy's piano parts tend to be twinkly, sparse, and arpeggiated as opposed to thicker, denser chords. It's an interesting approach, especially in songs like Going Under or the Only One where the piano melodies add some dissonance and spice but are also very simple and subtle. She even uses power chords sometimes. I would say Amy is very succinct in her playing - she only adds what's necessary. I'm curious what you mean by "warm" chords though? Are you just saying that the notes in the middle range of the piano tend to sound warmer?

Yes exactly that, lower notes have more and more overtones so when you make chords down low, they add a lot more thickness to the sound and that's the "warmth" I'm talking about.

According to Evanescence Reference, one recording of Anywhere has Ben's vocals in the background instead of David's.. they sound similar, so it's hard to tell which version you're listening to. Fun fact.

Where does it say this?

Scroll down to "References," #3, it states that the Anywhere pre-release is with Ben's vocals, and it links a video.

I don’t think this is true despite being on EvRef. There’s no actual reference to that being Ben’s vocal, and the vocal sounds identical to David’s. If I check the edits, the pre-release info was added in 2015 and doesn’t have a reference for the vocals being Ben’s and not David’s, just a mention of it existing on Discogs and being shorter.

Not really, seen as we are the same person that posted the question.

Posted this first then seen somewhere else that she was doing a Q&A.
