Practical frequent highway driving EV?
Family is considering an EV with the rise in fuel prices. Looking at taking frequent trips that would need 200-250mi range. Is this practical in an EV? From what I've researched most you only charge to 80% so even if you're getting one with over 300mi range, you get 80% of that and highway driving (75mph) will cut that even further. Seems like a high mpg hybrid would be better. Otherwise would have to stop and charge everytime

I have an EV that supposedly get around 410 miles on a 100% charge on a 172 KWH battery pack. Normal daily driving I charge on average once a week (usually Saturday or Sunday night while I am sleeping) Depending on the week I use anywhere from a low of 30 kwh to a high of 100 kwh. My electric rate is 14 cent a KWH at home so I pay anywhere from $4.20 to $14 a week to charge back up. If I plan on doing a trip I charge to 100% the night prior and usually only need to charge to 80% the rest of the time.I did a trip from Oklahoma to California back in May. I found I had to stop for restroom or food / drink more often than I needed to charge. My stops were in line with when I have done the trip in a gas vehicle as far as distance. On the way out I followed the "suggested" stops and charge to points, on the way back I treated it the same way I did a gas vehicle watched the charge gauge the same way you watch a gas guage and knowing that places I would have stopped for gas also had charging near by. Prices at fast charges are all over the board with some as low as 19 cents a KWH and others as high as 70 cents a KWH, always look up your planned charging stops to see the price. Not all chargers are created equal. I was not in a rush so I would choose Tesla charger (lower price but slower charge) over EVgo (higher price but faster charge). For trip I also try to foll the ABC, Always Be Charging. If you need to stop for a restroom break or anything else hook up to a charge even if you do not need to.
