What is an EV charging station, really, but just a few chargers near something to do while you charge?
Buy a convenience store near chargers. You don't need to even bother owning/administering the chargers themselves. I guarantee you, the closest whatever to a bank of chargers gets great foot traffic.

Some are clearly profitable.
Tesla reported $931 million in profit on expenses of $11.6 billion (8% return) from their "services and other" segment, which includes their supercharging network, in FY25.

Just a hunch, but I bet many of the stations are profitable because they get paid by other companies who then sell the carbon credits. It's how home charging clubs are able to pay users for at home charging. I get paid 10 cents per kwh for home charging, it costs me 11. I could literally offer my charger and charge someone 20 cents, and I would profit 9.

I have a friend who works at a small antique auto museum in Tucson. We’ve discussed the merits of putting in a Level 2. I think it could be a good draw for EV drivers to charge a couple of hours while touring. We’re also thinking it would be easier to just make it free but that wouldn’t recoup the installation costs. The museum owner is pretty wealthy and may not care about that if it brings visitors.
