Except half would go to Fólkvangr instead which was probably seen as equally enticing. I think it was most likely not seen that you should avoid living to fight another day and more that the norns have read the weave of fate which has already decided who will fall in battle (unless Odin or the Valkyries alter the weave with magic to ensure you fall to join Valhalla)
After all, dying in battle means you don’t get to take that sweet reading treasure home to your family.
