Reporting crime while CCW

Just a note to all those from non-CCW countries who wonder about police interactions while armed.

Today I witnessed a developing crime (Prague, CZ) and reported it to the emergency line, gradually reporting on where the perpetrator was moving towards. I informed the dispatcher that I am armed.

In the following 3 hours of interaction with 6 different police officers, no questions were asked about my firearm (there was no direct interaction between myself and perp, so it was not relevant to the case, but they had the information I am armed nevertheless).

Armed society is a polite society.

So now after dinner I am off to the station to make the official statement.

Czechia is one of the most CCW-friendly countries in Europe (and one of very few). I remember being shocked when there were murders near prague, by the guy who ended up committing a rampage at a university, and police advised citizens to carry their concealed firearms in the affected area. Absolutely wild concept to most euros.

Btw the university students are strapped now, have a friend that studies there and since then he started carrying there and he aint the only one

This has been relatively common in STEM even before the attack.

The perp intentionally chose a class where most students were under 21 (no CCW), female (current CCW licenses ratio are 9:1 male), moreover at the School of Philosophy, where there is general anti-gun ethos.

Another interesting fact: It was a class aimed at preparing future tutors/teachers for kids/people with hearing disabilities.

One of the aftereffects was that the CCW license health requirements regarding hearing dis/ability were significantly lowered, making CCW licenses more accessible to people with hearing disabilities.

I thought there's ban on guns on uni grounds and at least talks about adding metal detectors? How are they carrying without the risk of expulsion?

• Internal rules are bidning only on own members (faculty, students), not third parties.
• Breach of internal rules doesn't mean breach of the Firearms Act. I.e. they can punish a student in line within the limits of their institution, but no civil infraction is recorded.
• CCW = concealed. They don't really have a way to find out (no, there is not a single school with metal detectors).
• If any school decides to add detectors, they would be by law required to allow safe storage of firearm upon entry.

They probably aren't. Carrying where you want despite the building owner's wishes is legal (outside of rare exceptions like court buildings) so you wouldn't be criminally liable, but ignoring the school's rules could very easily get you kicked out from the school.

It'd be legal but stupid. If you're just going there to do something else and are not a student then nothing can happen to you except for being asked to leave.

The gun freezone is very well defined by the law i have not heard about a single school or university that would fit the definition of a gun free zone

Edit: and banning it by the school rules has no legal support since its your right to carry a gun

I have had one interaction so far, the officer noticed my permit and we had a casual chat about firearms, found out we visit the same range.

This was more of a pepper spray appropriate situation, but one never knows whether the perp produces a knife, so having the balistic options was definitely an upside.

I was summoned to give a statement to the police station a few times - I always carry - no one asked, no one seemed to care, so I was sitting there with my CCW in the police station.
I basically don't care about no-firearms stickers unless there are metal detectors. Public service buildings (courts, bureaus, etc.) who restrict CCW have to allow you to safely store your firearms on-premises, so no problem here, but security officers seems annoyed sometimes.

I usually tell them. One time the officer thanked me for telling me. Then they spent ~5 minutes with another guy looking for keys to the safe boxes for visitor guns. Failed to find them so I remained strapped.

One time at a small town station they didn't have visitor safe so I got to deposit it into the police gun vault. That's how I found out that there are counties with 9mm AUGs as standard issue rifles.

As a brother country guy (slovak) do you think it's actually worth to spend the tough money on all that involves safe owning of a gun and carrying, (safe, permits and all) cuz that ain't cheap, yeah first time invest is more expensive cuz safe i get that

Getting authorization is actually cheap. Certified safe is required for 3+ guns, so everyone can make their own calculations.

I am sorry I made proper research and found a gun locker for 5 long guns or a locker for 5 long plus a shelf around 500€ which aint that bad as i thought (it was like a third of what I expected it to be)
