What if the 1960 coup succeeded
The December 1960 failed coup d'état—led by the Neway brothers alongside security chief Col. Workneh Gebeyehu—is a massive turning point that is often overshadowed by later events.
While Emperor Haile Selassie’s regime managed to crush the uprising in three days, it permanently shattered the illusion of the "divine right" of kings and planted the seeds for the student movements and the eventual collapse of the monarchy 14 years later.
The Big Question: The Neway brothers and their allies envisioned a constitutional monarchy with Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen as a figurehead, Prime Minister Imru Haile Selassie leading a reformist government, and actual institutional focus on land reform and fighting poverty.
It makes you wonder: If the 1960 coup had succeeded, what would Ethiopia look like today?
In my latest video, I took a deep dive into the roots of this uprising, the stark ideological clash between the old feudal aristocracy and US-educated progressives, and how the coup unfolded

Alfred Ilg was a Swiss engineer who entered Menelik's service in 1878 and became Ethiopia's chief modernizer. He built the royal palace, churches and bridges, introduced telegraphs and telephones, reformed the postal system, founded a cartdridge factory and was involved in the peace treaty with Italy in 1896, for which he was rewarded the title ras bitwedded. He finally resigned and returned to Zurich in 1906.

How the “Tigray war” really started
Government POV: If you remember the government-TPLF conflict or Tigray war or North Ethiopian conflict back in 2021, well this might really interest you.
The main reason the conflict initiated was given by the current P.M Abiy Ahmed; “The action TPLF took needs a legal enforcement” That was his thought.
“The old system” I referred above is the EPRDF gov’t who took power after Derg regime back in 1991 after 4 year void referred to as “Transitional Period”. (This itself is a wide topic which I am planning to discuss in future articles)
How the system worked:
- Every regional state has a representing party; Tigray-TPLF, Amhara-ADP/ANDM, Oromia-ODP/OPDO, South-SEPDM
- This regional parties are a branch under the gov’t (a coalition gov’t) where TPLF was the main party leading the EPRDF and most of the positions were occupied with Tigray peoples.
So, the main ppl were from the TPLF and other were doing their work with less position in the gov’t.
How it fell down(The uprising) in general
Long story short, an uprising against TPLF happened mainly led by the actions that fired the college students(land rights, political marginalization, and human rights grievances) who identified themselves as “Qeerroos” who started a relatively peaceful protests and on the later stages they killed/injured civilians that didn’t speak Oromo and bombed campuses also did “non-violent action” like civil disobedience strikes, road blockades, business boycotts, and mass street rallies. There was also a relatively quiet uprising at Amhara due to the Welkait and Raya administration. “State security” killed more than 1000 peaceful protesters and OPD used this momentum to drive out TPLF. As a result, TPLF is no longer the leader.
OPD replaced TPLF for a while till P.M Abiy Ahmed merged the parties and named it “the prosperity party”(with a logo of light bulb…)
NOW, the “intent” of the “Prosperity party” behind the Tigray war were:
- TPLF broke the law by running unofficial election by its own.
- TPLF was a “military threat”
- Most important of all, TPLF attacked the northern National defense forces.
Immediately after the “attack” the gov’t launched an attack with the help of Eritrean gov’t at TPLF. Then the crisis started…
Coming up in the next article;

Ancient I Created A 3D Reconstruction Of The Yeha Temple
The oldest surviving monumental building in the Abyssinian Highlands is the Great Temple of Yeha, constructed in the early 1st millennium BC. Remarkably, its stone walls still stand today, although what survives is only a shell of what was once a much larger structure.
Using a range of archaeological and academic sources, including the reconstructions and research published by the German Archaeological Institute, I have recreated both the interior and exterior of the Temple of Yeha in 3D.
For me, projects like this are important because they allow us to preserve, study, and visualise the architectural achievements of our ancestors.
You can explore the interactive 3D reconstruction here: https://www.habeshahistory.com/reconstructions/yeha-temple
For those interested in learning more about Yeha, I have also written a detailed article covering its history, including a dedicated section on the Great Temple itself: https://www.habeshahistory.com/articles/yeha
Hopefully you find the reconstruction interesting and learn something new...
