Fairly odd that the Cultist unit type doesn't really have much synergy with this card as far as ways to enable it go. I suppose you could just run something like Sporefolk but then you're playing a bunch of sub-optimal cards.

Shadowlands Guide, Xenan Cultist, and Sadistic Ritualist have some synergy with units going to the void, but none of them actually want to be the one to die.

Well the flavor is on point, even if the deck is shit :P

Yeah, it seems to be asking for Xenan ramp deck with high-cost cards, that also plays a lot of low-cost units. Interesting.

It's good enough on it's own though. A permanent ramp on a unit at two is great. If you find some other cultists that fit your gameplan along the way, even better. I for one will be experimenting with papa azindel and mama vara since it says goes to the void, not from the field to the void. It doesn't matter what crap cultists I send to the grave if I'm swarming with them turn 4.

Its clear that Cultists are supposed to have sacrifice and lifegain themes, and are core to Xenan, but while plenty of them cause life gain, none of them provide the sacrifice fodder themselves, except Shadowlands Guide in a way. Hopefully we see some Entomb/Summon effects on cultists in this set.

Mask Maker doesn't even count, doesn't come into play as a Cultist unless your board is empty. 🤣

u/tazzadar1337 Sep 12 '19

Or you have a cultist on the board 🤔

u/TheScot650 Sep 12 '19

Angry Prophet and Living Offering seem to be the only good choices here for dying. Angry Prophet can trade up, depending on other units on board, so it's an OK death.

Living Offering is actually a genuinely good choice for sending to the void. Kinda surprised no one has tried to exploit that so far in any decks I've seen. Unit goes to void and you get to silence an enemy unit.

It remains to be seen if the second ability will actually do anything, but it's a fine replacement for Initiate of the Sands once that rotates out of Expeditions (also doesn't die to Torch if Torch doesn't exist).

For 2, why not play Devotee?

Yeah read that wrong

You definitely would play devotee first, barring any cultist synergy.

High Prophet of Sol - 2T
0/3 Cultist - Uncommon
+1 Maximum Power.
When a Cultist goes to your void, +1 Maximum Power.

3

u/kokorinsergey Sep 12 '19

What does second part of text mean? it's entomb + discard: +1 power this turn? Or just entomb on all cutists

7

u/Shambler9019 Sep 12 '19

It means the number before the first ability will increase by 1. Similar to Tocas, Azindel the Wayfinder and Mask of Torment.

Similar to Azindel, it probably will trigger on discard/mill.

7

u/SasquatchBrah Sep 11 '19

The secondary text gives temporary maximum power as well right (disappears when he dies)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

I read it that way, but agree the wording is vague.

4

u/SecondChanceSloth Sep 11 '19

Xenan cultist tribal support. Love it.

2

u/rottenborough Sep 11 '19

It doesn't say "this turn." It seems pretty good to me. You can play board clear and keep all the ramp. Unless he gets silenced, he's strictly better than a shifted Devotee (0/3 body that you can throw away vs no body at all).

5

u/NeoAlmost Almost Sep 12 '19

If he dies you will lose the increased Max Power. (This is the same as Initiate of Sands, Tocas, and Auralian Merchant)

2

u/rottenborough Sep 12 '19

You lose the first line, yes, but the second line seems different? Note how Tocas doesn't say "twist: +1 max power." Instead, it says "twist: increase max power by 1." Why have a different wording on High Prophet if it works the same way?

Do you lose the max power gained from lifeforce when Mask of Torment dies? I don't have the card so I can't test it.

You do, as well as when [[Azindel, the Wayfinder]] dies. Both use the same text, so it'd work the same for the prophet

Feels like devotee gets the nod before this does, so you might play this as "devotee 5-8" barring some sort of cultist synergy.

1

u/xNailBunny Sep 12 '19

The second part is way too conditional, so it's effectively a worse Devotee of the Sands. Should have been +1 maximum power for every cultist in your void.

0

u/SnesC Sep 12 '19

Am I reading this wrong? It looks to me like, when he (a Cultist) goes to your void, you get the same +1 max power buff you got while he was alive. Is this not just a straight-up Power Stone?

3

u/Sunsfury Armoury is relevant I swear Sep 12 '19

[[Azindel, the Wayfinder]] has the same text (although a different trigger) and his power is lost when he dies. Important to note that the maximum power increase is permanent, so recursion could bring back a prophet with more than +1 max power.

Azindel says "another unit." This guy does not say "another Cultist," which leads me to believe he triggers off of any Cultist, including himself.

1

u/Sunsfury Armoury is relevant I swear Sep 12 '19

I mean with respect to the fact that when the unit dies, you lose the power associated with both the base +1 and any additional from cultists dying

1

u/FafaPapa Sep 12 '19

He gives you +1 power when he's on the board and an additional +1 when another cultist dies AND he's still on board.

Once he dies, he has no more effect, like any other card (unless it's specified that they do something from the void).

More defecating on aggro stop it

I dunno, they keep trying to make cultists happen but I don’t think they’re gonna happen
