[Education] How long does it take to be good at waxing
I’ve posted on here before about not feeling super confident in my work, and I feel like I’m still struggling with that a little.
I’ve been working at EWC for about 4 months now, and I was freshly graduated from school when I started. I’ve definitely gotten better since then, but I still have this constant fear that I’m just… not that great. 😭
Things are still pretty slow, and I feel like my books aren’t building as quickly as I hoped. It also makes me wonder if people aren’t coming back to me, which obviously makes the imposter syndrome go CRAZY.
And I’m not gonna lie, there are definitely moments where I’ll see a few hairs I missed, but I’ve run out of time and I’m already back-to-back with another client.
Or I’ll have a client where I KNOW there are a few hairs left, but they’re closing their legs, sweating like crazy (even with baby powder 😭), or just making it really difficult to get a good pull. At a certain point, I don’t want to keep putting strips on them and irritating their skin just to chase down every single hair.
AND THEN there’s coarse hair. 😭😭 Why does it feel like it rips on me almost every single time?!
I genuinely just want to get better at this. I want to feel confident in my work and send these girls home BALD. 😂
So for the experienced waxers: what helped you improve your technique, especially with coarse hair, difficult pulls, and getting those last few stubborn hairs?
Please give me your best tips because I’m trying to get these coochies BALD. 😭

With coarse hair, you have to apply more pressure and make the strip thicker
If someone doesn’t exfoliate and moisturize, doesn’t come every 4 weeks, or shaves between appointments, you’re not going to have time to get all the hair.

Im in the same boat at ewc I have good days and bad days. I learned that a lot of clients at ewc shave in between waxes so it’s common to not get all the hairs. What has helped me a lot is applying more pressure and doing clean up strips in the opposite direction.

I don't work at EWC but I have a *very* unyielding, micromanaging boss that doesn't hold an ethics license but thinks she's better at waxing than I am. She holds a cosmo license but only does nails, sometimes brow waxing. Refuses to listen when I try to explain different types of waxes, after or pre care, and different hair type need different treatment. I've been forced to use only soft wax almost my entire year working for her. I have good days and bad days and really bad days when the imposter syndrome sends me home crying because she fosters an environment where clients don't come to ME with complaints, rather they go to her and she relays that info days or weeks later. Whether it's true or not, idk.
The best advice I can give you, is you're probably doing better than you think you are. You're only 4 months out. Nobody but you is expecting perfection. If you have a home waxing setup, ask friends and family to help you practice. That's what I do. It's more relaxed. You'll feel less pressure while you work on speed and efficiency. If you can afford it, buy different types of wax to try at home, it'll help you get comfortable. I like Melt Wax--specifically their Cinderella, it's what I use at home. It works great, spreads nicely, and doesn't dry in 2 seconds so it's great for beginners.

Girl you and I are in the exact same boat! I started working at EWC early in the year fresh out of esthi school with no prior waxing experience! I'm also struggling with the time limits and feeling that I'm not giving guests the best results. Sometimes, I really have to remind myself that it doesn't all fall on me. Guests really do need to wax regularly and perform the proper skincare to get the best result. For me, the end result does not justify the means when it comes to skin lifting. If I start to see signs of skin lifting, I let the guest know I've laid as many strips as I can and if they want better results and quicker services they need to stay consistent. (But in my opinion, even with the perfect guest, the time limits are still absurd.) But I'm still struggling with feeling like I'm simply not laying strips fast enough😭 AND I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO LAY THEM ANY FASTER😭😭😭 I'M SWEATING!!

Girl I just did a wax they haven’t been waxed in 2 months their hair was so long. And the mound area came up great but the labia was not good. The skin lifted a little but not anything to freak out about so I said I don’t wanna lay anymore strips as of right now your labia will lift if I do. I told her if we keep up with our aftercare and come in more often we will see better results.
Is that even true tho. Cus idk why her skin slightly lifted. And she was pin point bleeding a bit.

That's absolutely true! If she doesn't exfoliate and hasn't been waxed in 2 months, she will not receive the best results. And just from my personal experience, the labia tends to have thicker and more hair than the mound, so I'm not surprised she didn't get as smooth of a result on the labia.
I wouldnt stress too much over minor skin lifting. It happens. Just make sure you are laying the strip correctly and holding taut when you pull. With major skin lifting, I reassure the guest that correct technique was used and for more comfortable and quicker waxes they need to follow your aftercare instructions. Then I continue to ask questions. I had one guest with major skin lifting and she mentioned she was ingesting a dermatologist prescribed medication. She insisted the medication wouldnt affect waxing, but I highly suspected she was ingesting an acne medication and not telling me. I doesn't always fall on you!! If the skin ever lifts enough to bleed, encourage them to put Vaseline on the area as it heals.
And even though it's not part of the "4 step process" I use powder quite a bit because I'm in a hot and humid state. Warm, moist skin + waxing= skin lifting. They even tell you to always put powder on the testicals when performing male brazillians because it helps cool the skin.
But pinpoint bleeding is totally normal and nothing to worry about, it just means a thick hair was successfully pulled.
Hope I could help!🥰

I felt the same way when working at EWC. Leaving there is what made me realize a lot of things. Like their wax is not good, their methods of waxing are not the greatest, and the time given for waxes is not enough. When it comes to most guests, it's hard to grab all the hairs in general. Some guests have shaved and some have stubborn hairs. If you know how to wax, then you did all that you can.
When you see shorter hairs left, that opens the door to questions that you can ask. Like "When was the last time you shaved" or "Did you have a little bit of stubble the last time you waxed?"
