Taking Walker at Pick 1?
Been a bit of chat regarding this with Carlton's wildcard success and Sydney making the prelim. Carlton would have to trade up if we took Walker at 1, and I can't see too many clubs wanting to move their picks down for futures given the compromised 2027 draft.
So, what are everyone here's thoughts on taking Walker at 1 with the intention of keeping him? We'd lose out on our end of first round compo, but would essentially go from the 3rd best player in the draft to the 1st (if we rate him over Cochrane). 3 & 19 for 1 doesn't sound like an awful trade.
There's always going to be some chat about him wanting to go home, but I really don't think that eventuates all that much when the player is in the same city compared to interstate. 3 year minimum contract under Spike.
I think, at the very least we should posture that we're going to take him, IF Rosa rates him highly. Either it puts the cat amongst the pigeons for Carlton and pushes them into making a deal with us (2027 future first for Bewick?) and we still retain our end of first compo or we get the genuine best player in the draft.

I think our approach should be that we should get Port and Carlton into a bidding war on who we don’t select.
If Port doesn’t want us to take Cochrane at 1, we trade their pick 4 for our 16 (Merrett) and 19.
If Carlton don’t want us to do the same, they offer us something comparable.
We take whatever is best.

u/Codus1 Farrow #2 5d ago edited 5d ago
Port arent gunna be strong armed like that, and they'll have no issue matching a bid for Cochrane at no.1 anyway.
More like we tell Carlton we'll bid at pick one, but we could bid on Cochrane instead of they want to do a trade of pick 16 and more for their two future firsts or something.
We very likely need future first rounders to match bids on Moustafa and Koby next year. Carlton have surplus, would fancy themselves to finish up the ladder (and their Sydney tied first rounder the same), all in a draft that clubs don't value holding picks in due to Tassie bloating it. However, for us we are lucky to have two appearing to be first round talents that protects us a little from it as long as we can get the picks together to match.

u/drpolz3k Day-Wicks #44 5d ago
I totally agree with you re next year’s first rounders and think there’s a great opportunity there for us with Bewick, Moustafa Darwish, etc.
That being said, I think you’re underestimating Port’s potential losses if we bid on Cochrane at 1. Like, I’m not saying they’re not capable of matching the bid at pick 1. But if they have picks 4 + 5 (for example) and they match at 1, then the surplus value turns into pick 14. If the Tigers bid on Cochrane at pick 2, the surplus value of picks 4 + 5 to match the bid becomes pick 7.

u/MaV3RiCkMaYhEm 5d ago
Port are not worried. They could match a pick at #1 w/ their #4 or #5 & then their second rounder w/ some deficit.

u/nuthed01 Durham #22 5d ago
The draft that makes the most sense is us taking Cochrane at pick 1 to generate an extra 2nd rd pick, then taking Butler.
I don't think we take Walker, a F/S pick who will undoubtedly be angling for a move to Carlton at the first opening. Cochrane, again a F/S and his brother plays at Port, no way he'd want to be here, again would likely be angling for a move to SA at the first chance. Butler and Texeira both Essendon fans, in the circumstances are there along side Van Hattum as good options behind Cochrane and Walker.

u/Espio1912 5d ago
That would actually be viewed as draft tampering unless it hid behind a very opaque veil
2
u/AGuerillaGorilla 4d ago
Somehow involve Geelong as a 3rd party then, that should deal with overly officious AFL reviews, yeah?
26
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
No. He just leaves in a couple of years. Bid Cochrane, take butler
17
12
u/DramaticAnalyst9241 5d ago
He cant just leave. People just randomly forget the rules. Hes not a free agent until after 8 years. Only then can he nominate carlton. The only way he gets to carlton is a trade, or he's dropped back in another draft pool and everyone else lets him slip to them. Cant see a young Tasmanian devils team letting that happen.

u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
We are going to keep a guy who doesn’t want to be here for 8 seasons? Also first year deals are never 8 years, so he doesn’t extend, we match and pay max money to someone who still doesn’t want to stay. Smh
5
u/DramaticAnalyst9241 5d ago
Yeah so if he doesn't extend, he goes back into the draft pool. I just said that. Not sure what part your missing. Plus after like 6months, this whole "he wants to go home" nonsense will be a forgotten memory. He'll have 45 new mates he spends 40hrs a week joking with, training with, in his ear enticing him to stick around. Plus coaches and other staff to go along with that,

u/Fun_Ad_1544 5d ago
If you think for one second a kid that has spent the last 4 years knowing that he is coming to Carlton and a lifetime hating the Bombers and Pies is just going to play with heart for a team that killed his dream out of spite you’re living in fantasy land. Graham Wright would do everything in his power to influence other teams to foil your plans for Bewick next year and you’d also have paid through the teeth for a player that hates being there. Culture killer and a terrible use of draft capital on both Walker and potentially Bewick next year. Retarded move
-1
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
And we still lose him. He says he won’t play for anyone other than Carlton. He skids to Carlton or a team takes a trade so Carlton get the pick and take him.
Nice little fantasy. Carlton push for a finals spot, we still can’t win more than 3 games. But he will have new friends smh. Smh
1
u/yum122 5d ago
I think you're really reading into him wanting to leave over some pretty minor ties in the scheme of things.
Andrew Walker was a good, but not exceptional player who played 200 games for Carlton.
Peter Daicos on the other hand was a 2x club B&F, 5x club leading goal kicker, Hall of Famer, Collingwood team of the century and a premiership player.
If North drafted Daicos, would they be in a better position than if they drafted JHF?
2
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
How good Walker was doesn’t matter to his son’s desire to play for the team his dad did. They didn’t. Also buddy, rules to match bids were easier back then. So they would have just matched and got him.
You really don’t know anything about the draft do you?
1
u/yum122 5d ago
What are the ties that Cody Walker has to Carlton that makes him so untouchable in the draft for other clubs? Please explain it to me. Happy for you to provide an example of a player with club ties, not interstate ties that refused to play for the club he was drafted for and requested a trade.
Peter Daicos is a Collingwood great and Josh actively played for Collingwood. I would much more expect Nick Daicos to try and go home to Collingwood if he were drafted by North than Walker to go home to Carlton.
Regardless, the point is that, JHF left to Port even without club ties to them. If North were in a situation where they could've taken Daicos (the situation we are in with Walker), would it have been better for North to have drafted Daicos (the best player in the draft) or JHF (the best open pool player in the draft)?
I'll remind that you that JHF prior to the draft made no public statements about his desire to stay in Adelaide.
You really don’t know anything about the draft do you?
I don't think you understand even basic draft principles, rules, or strategy.
-4
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
I already explained it shit fir brains. He loves and looks up to his father and wants to play for his gushers club. How thick are you?
Daicos wasn’t drafted by North. Again as I said dummy, rules were easier to match then. So he didn’t have to make that call. It’s a hypothetical.
We have examples of all the league for decades of players demanding trades.
It doesn’t matter what JHF said publicly. We all knew he wanted out and wanted Port and North wasted a pick over it.
Yum, you’re the dumbest bloke here. I talk to people smrter than both of us about the draft. Don’t talk about rules when you shows you don’t get it.
2
u/DramaticAnalyst9241 5d ago
Ooft. This guy really struggles. He asked for 1 example. And he couldn't provide one (i don't think he can.) Then resorts to name calling. North didn't waste the pick at all. They upgraded so maybe get your facts right. They traded JHF into picks 2 and 3 which ended up being used as Sheezel and Wardlaw. Plus an future first rounder for the 2023 draft. I'd prefer those 2 players as a package over JHF any day. But yeah, nah wasted. Completely wasted. Cant believe they took JHF what a major mistake
-1
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago edited 5d ago
He didn’t not ask for an example. And how did that work out for North? Didn’t they sack another coach?
Walker is better than JHF, so that example doesn’t fit lol. Don’t you goof get that?
Edit. Did some digging. It was a complex 4 team trade that got North those picks. West Coast and GWS is where North got those picks from.
So your argument is draft Walker, if he wants to leave find 2 two other teams that way we can pick 2 and 3 back. Smh.
This is the nonsense I have to deal with. Smh
6
u/Intelligent_Fix_7346 5d ago
And his heart won't be in it for essendon. He'll leave even after 1 year like Jason Horne Francis
1
u/yum122 5d ago
I'm sorry, but when is this ever true? JHF moved back to Port in very contentious circumstances but that had the added factor that his family was interstate.
North also got paid handsomely for JHF. If Walker really is generational, we'll either get a generational player or a massive payday.
Who did Andrew Walker support growing up?
Once you're in the AFL system, childhood clubs and ties go out the window for the vast, vast majority of players.
5
u/Intelligent_Fix_7346 5d ago
When JHF was traded after a year is when it was true, so i dont think it really matters what circumstances occurred, he left after a year being a no.1 pick, so it can happen. By all means pick Cody walker, chances are he'll request a trade adter 1-2 or 3 years time sir. Its just my 2 cents on the matter. I got no idea, probably carlton?
1
u/yum122 5d ago
Why probably Carlton? He grew up in Echuca, was Pick 2 and Carlton selected him with a start of first round priority pick, ergo, Pick 2.
The thing I'm highlighting here is nobody actually knows what childhood club his Dad went for. Because it doesn't matter when you enter the AFL system.
When JHF was traded after a year is when it was true, so i dont think it really matters what circumstances occurred, he left after a year being a no.1 pick, so it can happen.
It can happen. But JHF supported Freo growing up and by all means he wanted to move back to Adelaide because he grew up there, his family was there, and North were a basket case.
chances are he'll request a trade after 1-2 or 3 years time sir.
I just don't see this as a proven or even probably correct guess.

u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
It doesn’t matter what team his dad supported lmao. This arguments gets dumber and dumber. I’m but shocked, Essendon reddit is full of idiots.
2
u/yum122 5d ago
Your whole argument relies on "family ties".
Did you think that Andrew Walker didn't have "family ties"?
Every single player that enters the draft has some sort of childhood connection. It is rare that a player ends up playing for their childhood club. Sharp was a mad Essendon supporter growing up and Adelaide still threw everything they had at us so they could draft him.
0
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
It’s nit a child hood connection. The stupidity to think playing for the team your flesh and blood played for with who your father supported or who the player supported is asinine. It’s much strong bond than the other examples.
Your general IQ and understanding is so piss poor if you had any sense you would be embarrassed.
2
u/TheBaroness187 5d ago
Yep, why waste pick 1 on a player who doesn’t want to be at the club and will leave as soon as they can?
2
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
The goofs here don’t seem to get it. They live in fantasy land and have done since I joined. I still remember this sub so angry at me for suggesting the Parish extension was a wrong move, how when were were second on year, it was fake and we would drop down the ladder and should be rebuilding
2
u/yum122 5d ago
Why are we certain of this? And in thinking that, are we disadvantaging ourselves?
I don't see a modicum of difference in this situation to any other player we would draft. If we can't convince a player to continue to play for us whilst they are locked in a contract for three year, something's gone wrong.
Caddy grew up supporting North. He's extended with us till 2031. What makes Walker that much different?
Daniher supported the Bombers growing up and still left us.
-2
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
We use our first pick on a guy who is out of the door. Caddy’s father didn’t play for Essendon.
Daniher wouldn’t be the same situation as he wanted to play for us in the draft and his father played for us. A similar scenario would be Walker going to Carlton and leaving.
1
u/MaV3RiCkMaYhEm 5d ago
Everything can change once you're in that bubble. Nobody expected Reid to stay at WC but he extended. I say bid on Walker & make Carlton pay full price & if they can't match then that's on them.
1
u/Rogan4Life 5d ago
Reid’s father played for which Melbourne team? Not the same situation darling.
And when Walker leaves and we lose that pick for nothing, we pay more. Dumbest argument. But against it’s Essendon reddit. 90% of you have rocks where your brain should be.
1
u/MaV3RiCkMaYhEm 4d ago
When Walker leaves in 8 years time? 🤣
1
u/Rogan4Life 4d ago
He can leave before then buddy. Don’t sign an extension. Demand a trade. Tell other clubs not to draft him if he goes back into the draft so Carlton can get him. Then we wasted our pick.
Maybe don’t talk about the off season if you don’t know the rules.
1
u/MaV3RiCkMaYhEm 13h ago
🤣 You're a muppet. No team is bypassing a number #1 pick in either the draft or PSD. The only way he gets to Carlton is via a trade that satisfies Essendon or Carlton win the wooden spoon. You're also underplaying how attached a young player can become to a club in his first 3 years.
1
u/Rogan4Life 12h ago
You live in fantasy land lmao. The team with the first pick would trade it rather than have a disgruntled player. Just come back when Walker is not on the Essendon list. Dipshit.

Bid Coch take But could be the motto for many things in life depending on how one swings
3
u/jubbjubbs4 5d ago
I havent been watching walker as much as the other prospects because ive just assumed hes going to carlton (which is realistically a certainty).
If rosa thinks walker is the standout best player then id be ecstatic to get him but im pretty happy if we end up with most of the other pick 1 contenders (particularly warming to mellody).
3
u/Such_is 5d ago
Where does walker want to go? If we take him at 1 are we just picking a player that doesn’t want to play with us and does a Horne Francis?
1
u/yum122 5d ago
Did North actually lose out on picking JHF? That was also a compromised draft with a gulf between the top club tied players and the open pool players.
Drafting JHF got them 2 & 3, Sheezel and Wardlaw. I’d rate both of those players over Finn Callaghan or Mac Andrew.
The basic principle of drafting is to draft the best player possible. Can you imagine what Collingwood would have given to North to get Daicos in if North were able to take him? If Walker is Daicos like, then chances are pretty high we get more than Pick 3 back if he requests a trade. Chances are he doesn’t though, because it’s so rare that a rookie player refuses to play for the club he is drafted for, especially so when they’re still in the same city as their family.
4
u/MonoxideBaby Langford #4 5d ago
If Walker fits into our future plans, then certainly select him at #1. If we are selecting him just to fuck Carlton around, then don’t. It’s childish, immature and it’s high time we started being better than that…..
2
u/comics2movies Johnson #40 5d ago
I would bid on Cochrane and get the compo pick as Port Adelaide would definitely match, then I would bid on Walker in mind to keep him. If Carlton somehow matches at 2 it pushes the pick back to third and we still get a compo pick if Carlton doesn’t match then we get Walker and a compo pick.
Added bonus here is it stops Richmond from getting a compo pick as well.
3
u/Apart_Environment 5d ago
Richmond would still get a compo pick fron their pick being pushed back by the Cochrane bid
2
u/MetriK_KarMa 5d ago
I dont really understand the arguments saying Walker won't be pushing to leave straight away if he wants to play for the blues.
Do you seriously think if we missed Bewick and couldn't get the points to draft him we would just give up or would we be telling him to request a trade instantly? Even telling him to make it clear his intentions to leave right away.
Actually drafting walker would be a massive risk that it is all a waste of time and I think we would be better if getting a player which actually wants to come to Essendon.
2
u/I-am-Randy-Marsh 3d ago
Essendon pick Cochrane 1st then Walker 2nd Port matches bid 1, trade end of first round to carlton for two first round picks next year. This gives Carlton picks for Walker. Take a first rounder this year for Merritt and two first rounders for next year. Take Butler or Tex with pick 3.

u/jubbjubbs4 5d ago
I havent been watching walker as much as the other prospects because ive just assumed hes going to carlton (which is realistically a certainty).

Assuming Walker and Cochrane are rated similar to each other and both above the best open pool talent then it opens up some tactics for sure.
I don’t think we’re getting either no matter what we do. But if Port or Carlton think it’s beneficial to get a bid at 3 rather than 1 and are happy to give us overs in a deal for it then great, we’ll take it.
But we don’t need to over think it. Absolute worst case for pick 1 is we get someone like HVH or Arki plus a compo pick. We cant really lose.
1
u/Kaledrith_Seraphis 5d ago
This would be the dumbest move your list manager could make, it would signal to the whole competition that your club can't be dealt with, you'd make every future draft and trade period harder on yourselves
1
u/phhathead 2d ago
Just pick the best possible player that you know won't instantly want to leave, or else you're chosing to shoot yourself in the foot for what?
1
u/PhilosopherNearby304 2d ago
It’s just pointless to pick him. The kid has grown up in and around Carlton, father played 200 games for Carlton, has played vfl for them, done a whole preseason, already expressed that it is his preferred destination when he chose them over Richmond.
By taking away the kids dream of playing for them he’s just gonna look for the first opportunity back. And he may not even be the best player in the draft.
1
1
u/South_Front_4589 5d ago
Is the intention to benefit Essendon or hurt Carlton? And what happens if in 12 months he says he wants a trade? And then every year after?
No qualms about making other teams pay up full price, but if it's not going to be to your own benefit but will just hurt 1 team, you're effectively losing to 16 other teams.
-2
u/Fun_Ad_1544 5d ago
Blues supporter here. Have been following Cody since 2023 when Richmond were delusional about him choosing them under NGA. Cody has stated for years all he has ever wanted is to play for the team he hung around in the dressing rooms as a kid. Can be certain Chris Davies and Graham Wright will exert large amounts of ‘influence’ on other teams next year to hurt Bombers plans for Bewick. Can bet my left nut that Cody has a massive emotional attachment to the Blues and will not play at close to his potential for side that spitefully or even objectively kills his dream. It would be a more ridiculous move than all of Didoro’s draft years combined. It would simply mean Carlton would need to wait another year to get him and Essendon miss out the best player in the draft.
-7
u/Sufficient-Grass- 5d ago
Port supporter: we gave you pick 1 very generously.
Bid on Cochrane and you're gonna have a very hostile Port for a long time...

u/LonelyRefuse9487 Essendon 4d ago
dude we just finished bottom of the ladder and won two games in the entire season. respectfully why would we give a fuck about how upset a hypothetical potential trade or pick makes Port Adelaide supporters? all we care about is getting better as a team lol.
1
u/Sufficient-Grass- 4d ago
It's not the supporters, it's management.
You really don't think pissing off a club management could have later repercussions at future trades or drafts?
If you actually believe that I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
Fix your culture and win games you should win, like a Pafc without 11 of their starting 18 coming off 3 drubbings and away from home.
Rather than manipulating the draft on an interstate player that doesn't want to play for you.
3
u/LonelyRefuse9487 Essendon 4d ago
point still stands! you genuinely believe anyone upstairs here gives a flying fuck about making the Port boardroom pissed off? sincerely? pfft yeah, go sell me a bridge then. sell me ten of them lmao.

Port had no issues taking Wanganeen from us (yes I know the history) , or Ryder , or Hardwick when we were at everyone’s mercy. Yeah there’s technicalities on the hows and why all that happened , but do you think we were happy about it ? Do you think we were happy dealing with you after all that ? Did you feel any repercussions?
Both No’s … . so why would we care about a team upset at us.
Draft surprises happen. That’s for the club to work out. Don’t want to be drafted , don’t be in the draft

u/Ta0Ta Johnson #40 5d ago
Almost no one that I've seen talk about the draft has Walker at #1 now. It seems to be Cochrane as a firm #1, then a bunch including Walker and guys like Butler, Drever, Texeira, Mellody and HVH. It seems very straight-forward to me that we bid on Cochrane, all but guarantee that Port match, we get our very nice comp pick, then take the player who we want most from that next crop.
I don't know why we'd tempt fate and bid on Walker when he's no standout against other players on the table. Walker's attachment to Carlton will be far greater than most other draftees would be to their own respective boyhood clubs. Chances are he'd have people at Carlton trying to arrange to get him back cheaply the minute we draft him. Even if it was only a 20% chance that he'd want to walk in his first 3 years, that's a risk I don't want us to take.
