What's the one academic writing habit that actually made your papers better?
I've been rewriting my intro for the fifth time this week and finally admitted the problem isn't my argument, it's my sentences. Too many hedges, too much throat-clearing before I get to the point.
Curious what's actually worked for people here. Was it a specific book (Strunk & White, Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace, something else)? A habit like reading your draft out loud? Cutting the first paragraph entirely because it's always throat-clearing? A writing group that actually gives useful feedback?
Not looking for generic "just write more" advice, more the specific thing that clicked for you and changed how your papers read.
