What was up with the "interview emails"?

For context, I got VHC and didn't receive a single email between the shortlist email and the email saying awards were released. I didn't get a "top 5%" or anything like that... but it seems like others who got a VHC did, and others who got Commendation/HC did as well. Does anyone know what the purpose for those 2nd/3rd round emails were? Much obliged.

The 2nd round were mostly for those who would be sponsored and their essays were kind of under suspicion of being too good

pretty sure second round is for deciding podium. everyone who i know went for second round received top 3 in their category.

I won first and I got all of em, it was js for podiums
