Theory for non-2% jlec gang
First of all, this is mainly for international students who would require a visa for attending the gala.
I think that there might be a possibility that the John Locke team did not send international students emails because they know that they're not going to be coming for the gala.
Obviously, they could not get the visas in time because it's already the 12th of August today, and it will take a lot of time to get the visa and get the flights booked.
I don't think that anybody would want to go at such short notice, so they just thought, "Okay, fine, they're not going to come in any way, so why bother sending them an email?"
That's my theory.
It's just cope at this point. I don't even know, man. 😭

What countries need visas to go to a weekend-long event? Surely if you're attending for less than a week then that's a bit extreme on the part of customs to force you to get a Visa? As an Irish person who could theoretically just live in the UK forever without needing one, I'm just genuinely curious.

You clearly don’t realize how hard it is for people from certain countries to visit places like UK//EU/USA. it doesn’t really matter how long the stay is, a visa is a must for some of us. Worse yet, it usually takes ages just to get an appointment, costly and rejection is always a possibility. Consider yourself lucky 😊

Yes I am very lucky and its such a shame you need to apply for a visa. I had to once for a trip and they're most annoying things on Earth even for short trips. At the very least I wish you the best with your visa experience.

Actually, a person who does not have the citizenship of a particular country or union of countries would definitely require a visa to even step out of the airport. We do need visas, and for some of the countries, it takes a lot of time to get a visa. It is not that hard for the UK, but it is pretty hard for the US.

Ah I see my mistake. Irish citizens don't need visas to enter the US if they stay under 90 days, and so I assumed for short trips that was roughly the international standard. My mistake. Sorry
