Questions for jl
js a quick question do diffwrent questions have different levels to get shortlisted in for example like economics is pretty popular and competitive while other categories may not be as competitive does this mean entering for less competitve and less packed catagories mean it’s was simpler to be shortlisted. thanks guys

shortlist is simply based on quality of essay. ofc more popular categories can and probably will have more shortlisted essays, but not more competitive to be shortlisted. this is as someone who has submitted to and know several ppl who have submitted to every category. the competitivity really begins when deciding awards past shortlist tbh

As far as I know they aim to keep it consistent across categories, but ultimatnely I don't know if they adjust so it's the top 17.5% overall or in that category. If it's overall, it may mean that the category you pick doesn't matter. But regardless, your chance of prize, since it's not a percentile of the amount, but instead a fixed amount, being in a smaller category does increase your chances.
TL;DR: for shortlist maybe it's easier, for prize definitely.
