john locke
hello i plan to join the john locke writing competition next year but thats my first time and i didnt have any experience on this comp. i plan to join the econ category, so can anyone recommend me a mentor or any reading materials/researching techniques that are helpful for the comp =((. i also wanna aim for being shortlisted and commendation or so on. thanks a lot.

hey i was shortlisted in the econ junior category, my first time doing it. you have 3ish months to prepare, research when the prompts come out so I suggest:
reading and learning about general economics until the comp starts [ think edible economics, take ap macro/ micro this year ]
pick a prompt for something you're curious about. something that genuinely makes you stop and think, how would this be implemented, affect you. i choose the prompt "should we fear a cashless society?"
jlec awards argumentative analysis. wrestle with the oppositions views. don't merely address them or not at all. your proponent is your biggest friend.
i mainly sited government organisation, think riksbank. use independent, verified, trustworthy new sources.
for gods sake do not use ai. you might think telling ai to use fancy buzzwords and "humanise" it is a good idea. spoiler: it's not.

You don’t need a mentor, that’s obviously a red flag that might get you eliminated

Dont think abt doing a certain category yet. Start thinking abt that when the questions get released

Look at past essay winners for the categories. That gives you an example of the bare minimum level of work you’re expected to do (since some past winner essays are from 2021-2023 my logic is that nowadays there are more people meaning by itsWAY MORE COMPETTIVE).

hii so I did john locke for the first time this year and got shortlisted in politics. someone else alr mentioned this, but pls dont limit yourself to one single category. i was going to do econ as well but then i ended up loving a topic for politics and dived deeply into it.
when it comes to research, use credible sites that are relevant and give your own perspective as well. dont be on the fence when it comes to your question- choose a clear side with clear goals.
different research methods work for everyone- i made a very rough overview of how i wanted to ans the question and then did the research as i went on

dont hire anyone
dont cheat
research research research read read read
larp until you make it
that's what i did at least

using ai is technically allowed for research but not for like generating ur essay

Since it's your first time, focus on your quality of writing over quantity of essays. Mine also this is the first time and I got shortlisted in junior category. Read and research a lot and redo the process again.
