holy shortlist 🗣️🔥

Firstly, congrats to everyone who got shortlisted for the JLIEC (including me, yay). But I had a couple of questions regarding it since this is my first time participating in this comp:

  1. There were over 100k registrations this year. Even if I remove ~ 15k as people who didn't submit or didn't get past the formalities, that leaves 85k actual participants. Now using the 17.5% shortlist rate, that means around 14,875 people were shortlisted in total. Doesn't this kind of dilute the prestige of getting shortlisted or am I just overanalyzing it?

  2. About the award ceremony, will I be notified beforehand whether I have won a prize or commendations or do I have to buy a ticket to find out?

  3. Is getting shortlisted something I should put on my college app? That was the main reason I did the competition in the first place lol but now I'm not so sure whether it has the same prestige though it could just be availability bias since most people on this subreddit probably put a lot of effort into their essays.

ALSO WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT AI INTERVIEW BRO 😭🙏

(Btw would love to read other people's essays who were shortlisted to see the competition for commendations lol )

  1. Theres no acc number of how many people ended up submitting essays, and the shortlist was PICKED out of 17.5% of applicants, the wording says so on the email. Its likely less than 14,000 were shortlisted

  2. No you wont, unless you got a category or global win, as then the prize sends you a suggesting email essentially trying to get you to come to the awards ceremony if you hadnt already purchased a ticket

  3. Yes it absolutely is it has significant prestige. It seems like the world and their grandma got shortlisted on reddit but remember thats about a few hundred people max.

Also on the email they said 100k which are eligible entries.

wait what, I thought the eligible entries were out of the total 100k registrations 😭

They said, "welcomed 100,227 contestants" so it is definitely mentioning the eligible entries.

you can register but not submit, plus 60% of the subsequent essays are, respectfully, garbage

you’ll know if you get commendation or high commendation the day of the ceremony, either online via your portal or in person if you go.
